Everyone in the Portokalos family worries about Toula (Nia Vardalos). Still unmarried at 30 years old, she works at Dancing Zorba's, the Greek restaurant owned by her parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan). After taking a job at her aunt's travel agency, she falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), a teacher who is tall, handsome and definitely not Greek. Toula isn't sure which will be more upsetting to her father, that Ian is a foreigner or that he's a vegetarian.

@Timothee (or whoever sets up your vocal recording levels) - As someone who works in the broadcast industry, I'd like to point out that Clariss's microphone level is set WAY TOO strong. Or her mic is just too close to her mouth. She is clipping(distorting) which makes her sound muddy. I regularly use those same Audio-Technica headsets in my TV broadcasts & can say that if they are set correctly, they will sound good. Off the cuff, if you trimmed the input of her mic down by about -6dB that would make a big difference & get her voice level about the same loudness as yours. Am looking forward to your next YT video. \ooo/

As an American with Greek heritage I can attest that a lot of these family quirks are true, albeit a little exaggerated for comedy. I even showed my husband (boyfriend at the time) this movie as prep for meeting my mom's side of the family. There are three things that are absolutely true: we are very loud, family will make you something to eat even when you say you aren't hungry, and the men of the family are very protective.
I can't count the number of times I went to family reunions and the entire table was filled with food. My mom is the oldest of five and when everyone gets together (-in laws and grandchildren included) it was so loud. Its usually because there's so many of us that multiple conversations are happening at once and each group has to talk a little louder over the other to hear each other, which just makes the whole room seem pleasantly chaotic with chatter and laughter.
To this day whenever I visit my mom she will ask me if I'm hungry. I say no, and then five minutes later shes asking me again if I'm sure I'm not hungry. Then five minutes after that she'll ask me if I want a sandwich. When I say I'm still not hungry she'll ask me if I want something to drink. Eventually I learned that I either need to show up to my mom's starving or eat out before heading there and ask my mom if I can have a drink instead. It's almost in our DNA to feed each other.
It's not a stretch to say that Greeks do have a temper, which is why when Toula's father gives her the evil eye glare (known as the mati in Greek) when Ian leaves it still gives me a sense of dread. As a Greek when you get the mati from a parent or grandparent you know you screwed up and there'll be hell to pay later.

The common names in the family is mainly due to tradition...the first son and daughter named after the paternal grandparents, the second son and daughter named after maternal grandparents. It's not a written in stone cultural thing, and variations exist, but passing down names in the family is common.
Also, I can relate to this movie being half-Greek, though some elements are exaggerated for comedy, but I've found that a lot of people of other cultures (especially Latino or east European) have commented on how relatable it is as well. I think this is why it became such a hit. It has a way of feeling like common ground.

I'm half-Greek (my mom is a second-generation Greek-American) and this is one of my family's favorite movies of all time. My mom laughs at this movie from beginning to end, and has said she can find every single member of her family in here. It's also really accurate to actual Greek culture (save for a few parts like being baptized in a kiddie pool). It was a sleeper hit when it came out, and became popular through word-of-mouth (it only cost $5 million to make, but made $368 million, and I think it's the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time). Also, it takes place in Chicago but was filmed in Toronto; I laugh when Toula goes to Truman College because the actual Truman College looks nothing like that. Finally, regarding the cast, you might recognize Andrea Martin, who played Voula, the aunt who owns the travel agency. She's a comedian who has been in several movies and TV shows. If either of you grew up on Nickelodeon, she played the voices of Aunt Miriam in Rugrats and Miss Fowl in Jimmy Neutron.

One youtube reactors, Movie Buds, one of the guys is Italian but lives in Australia and he had commented how because the family was away from Greece they were clinging onto cultural traits more. And considering Gus and Maria came over during a war, makes since they would cling to old traditions.

We had an "adopted" aunt named Sophie Theophanopolis. She owned a true soda fountain cafe corner candy store, but with a gun store. As a championship skeet shooter from the late 1940's through the early 80's. She also smoked cigars and pipes, and everyone loved her. There are not too many movies showing Greek family stereotypes, and I love it. Another great movie with Nia is "My Life in Ruins" along with Richard Dreyfus and is filmed in Greece.

fun fact: I live around the corner from the house that was in the movie, the big white house. I remember when they were filming the movie, the street was closed off for a few days. Same thing happened when they filmed the second sequel. However, the house has been renovated and you would never know it was the same house now. All the white is gone from the front of the house and it has an entirely different look. It was filmed in the east end of Toronto. Shots of the travel agency and restaurants were from Danforth Avenue, which has a large Greek population.

What made this movie so great was how relatable it was to so many. And you could interchange the Greek culture for any other culture. I'm black (mom) and Puerto Rican (dad) and wasn't really raised in a Hispanic household due to my parents divorce when I was 4. My wife is 100% Puerto Rican and the culture clash during our courtship and eventual marriage was incredibly similar to this story. The relatability was uncanny. I'm pretty sure any couple from different ethnic backgrounds could relate to the story. And that's want made it so great.

I like that although the dad is the antogonist of the story (and he definitely hurts Toula in several ways), he's not the villain. He genuinely loves her and worries for her. He doesn't really get that the world has moved on from what he knows. You see this a lot with people that have emigrated. They tend to hold fast to old traditions from their family, culture and/or religion, so they don't really modernise with the country they're in, and also don't modernise with the country they're from.
There was a biographical book I read about a young Dutch couple that emigrated to New Zealand in the 50s, just after the war. Especially the man kept his 50s attitude a lot. He didn't really feel at home in New Zealand in a lot of ways, so he clung to the things he thought were Dutch and traditional, but were actually just 50s and conservative. But when he went back to The Netherlands in the 70s, kind of secretly looking for a house, he ended up going back and staying in New Zealand, because of course, time hadn't stood still in The Netherlands and everything had changed. He felt The Netherlands was all kinds of too modern, and weird, and he didn't say it, but strongly implied he felt everything was immoral and indecent.
It's an understandable thing, but it does end up hurting Toula and the rest of the family, because they are moving with the times, and they are American now, not Greek from 40 years ago. So I like that he learns to let go a little, he learns to trust his children to forge their own path and live happy lives.
He worries Toula will not find a decent man if he doesn't check them out first, which is a normal worry, because he loves her, but he takes it to the extreme, and this makes Toula think (kind of logically) that he doesn't trust her, and that he doesn't think she's competent. Which is not what he is trying to do, but it is the result of his actions.

This movie holds such a special place in my heart because my family and I would watch it a lot when I was younger because it was so representative of us. The thing is, we’re not even greek. My mom is russian and my dad is american. so my dads stories of going to russia and meeting my mom and subsequently meeting her family is so reminiscent of this movie. One scene in particular that is so spot on is when the aunt says “he don’t eat meat? that’s okay. i make lamb”. basically this exact thing happened to my dad. my mom was eastern orthodox and before getting married my dad had to go to the church and meet the priest. the priest explained that he would need to fast for a period before the wedding. This included abstaining from meat and dairy. My parents got married right after the fall of the soviet union, so my mom and grandparents had only recently been allowed to return to church. I guess my grandmother had forgotten some things because when my dad told her he couldn’t eat meat, she said “it’s okay. i’ll make chicken”. of course, my family also related to the drinking. except it wasn’t ouzo, but vodka. my grandmother has passed away and watching this movie always reminds me of her in the best way possible❤

I know her dad seems kind of mean. but it's more of a cultural thing. they came from a small village in the middle of the mountains in Greece. literally everything about her from waiting so long to get married to her going to college and then eventually marrying somebody from a different culture. She's the first in her whole extended family to do any of it. it's not what they're used anb it's terrifying for them. Every time her dad yells how could she do this to me it's easy to mistake that for embarrassment over her breaking with tradition when really it's how can she scare me like this. It sounds harsh but he's just bad at expressing his fear and his love

I will say, I do think a lot of the concern about how old she is, as in a lot of cultures, has to do with maternal health. For time immemorial, women tended to die in childbirth, you had to have a lot of kids since so many died in childhood - more kids meant more chance of at least one reaching adulthood and continuing the family line - and younger women had an easier time of getting pregnant and surviving it. Men, meanwhile, can reproduce into old age barring something going wrong. All of that adds up to a cultural norm of women marrying young, especially in a family like this where the parents grew up poor. The problem is hanging onto those norms in a time when modern medicine and culture have moved us away from those needs, and there is certainly sexism involved in terms of expecting every woman to have children - especially since they already have grandchildren through Athena - but on some level they *are* looking out for Toula... sort of.

I was smiling this whole reaction.❤😂 I love this movie, and loved your reaction to it! It's so funny, and I agree that everyone can relate to at least one of the characters or one of the families. I actually saw this in the theater when it came out around Christmas that year with my mom, grandma, and several aunts and cousins. Also, Félicitations à vous deux! ¡Felicidades!

IRL, I think the thing that Nia did was enroll in Second City, where she met her husband Ian Gomez.

Not gonna lie but this movie was basically home video of my own life! I'm Mexican but my family acts exactly like this! They were this crazy at my mom's wedding and at my wedding, they gave my husband and my in-laws a heck of a welcome. Although they were quickly accepting of my white stepfather and my white husband.
And honestly I kind of knew you guys were together. The way you always acted towards other whenever you would collab was very very close.

Hi, if you liked this movie you have to watch Crazy Rich Asians. It's about two people from different cultures that fallen in love but the rich family doesn't approve. There's a wedding that costs 40 million dollars. It will make you cry.

This is my fave reaction video to this movie! My hubby and I first watched the MBFGW movies 1 and 2 last year for the first time. It truly is wholesome with so much nuances and relatable expressions. I’m from a big family and my hubby only has his small immediate family haha

When I was younger, I enjoyed this movie for it's weird, quirky sense of humor. Now that I'm older, I really appreciate this movie for going against the usual romantic comedy tropes. For example, Ian doesn't know he met Toula at the restaurant earlier. Instead of keeping it a secret until the climax and having a whole "liar revealed" where they separate and waste time moping, Ian discovers early on and doesn't judge her for it. He figures that it doesn't make a difference and continues to see her regardless. This movie is almost like a satire of romantic comedies while also being it's own funny romantic comedy.

I'm subscribed to both of your channels! Clariss, I absolutely ADORED your reactions to 'Encanto' and 'Hunchback of Notre Dame.' I was watching this like 'why is she so familiar... I KNOW her from somewhere... Is she from Philly?' Now I know! Congratulations to you both!

I LOVE Lainie Kazan. This role and my other two favorites (one from TV; another movie). She was "Aunt Freda" on "The Nanny" & her role as Bette Midler's character's mother in "Beaches" is epic!!
This also was Joey Fatone's acting debut after 'NSync had broken up. He also has his own business in Orlando called "Fat One Dogs" (play on his last name). And then he was a game show host when he did "Common Knowledge" from January 14th, 2019 to August 13th, 2021. He is also one of two people to be a host of a game show and the announcer on a different game show, as he was "Family Feud's" announcer from 2010 to 2015 (the other is George Gray, where he hosted the syndicated 30 minute US version of "The Weakest Link" & has been the announcer on "The Price Is Right" since 2011.

I’m Greek and I married a Xeno (outsider, also where the word xenophobia comes from). My parents shopped me around to every eligible Greek man they could find. My wedding wasn’t very big and I didn’t get a house as a wedding present. When I was pregnant with their first grandchild, I did get a down payment, though.
At a baptism the baby is entirely submerged in the water three times. There was a loud audible gasp from the non-Greeks in the church since they had never seen this type of baptism.
