    apt-get update doesn't update any software on your device, it just updates the list of available software. if you realy want to get the newest version of everything, you have to run sudo apt-get upgrade (preferably right after the update command).

    • @bergerle
      @bergerle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ARPANettic Productions (discontinued channel) that's why I wrote that you should run upgrade right after update...

    I see you've got a message about the risk of powering off w/o clean shutdown in the video...
    But a top tip if you've got a setup w/o keyboard (or even headless) is to look at your router, since unless you've configured the Pi for a static address (which you'd know) then it'll be the router that gives out the IP address to the Pi. Instructions will vary based on router, but they're all pretty similar and you just look at attached devices. If that isn't practical, there are network scanning tools - you'd need to be on the same network obviously but it'd find the Pi for you (they're even available to run on mobile, eg Fing)

    Last time I did electronics, LEDs were 1.2 volts and needed a resistor. To drop the current. Are these. 3.3 volt ones special?

  • @BillyABilli
    @BillyABilli 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OK, I am a beginner and I enjoyed your video. However, could you please make sure to highlight somewhere the importance for the LED to be the BLUE one? I fried a couple before discovering that LEDs generally need a resistors and the reason why the blue one doesn't is because its voltage is closer to 3.3v (I think 3.2) xD.

    • @rdoetjes
      @rdoetjes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BillsOnBills Exactly the Blue LEDs require more current than the other colours hence you do not need to limit the current, although it's a very bad habbit to not put in resistors. You always want to limit the current to the maximum allowed current.
      So even if the resistor is small like 30 ohms or so you should put that resistor in series.

  • @rdoetjes
    @rdoetjes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Add a shebang to your script
    Which is
    #! and set that to pyhton #!/usr/bin/python
    and set execute rights onto your script file and then you can just start the script without having to first time python.

    when you test the LED you plug from the 3.3V to the led to the GND without any resistor???

    • @Shaneyake
      @Shaneyake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Guillaume R so that is definitely not the best way to do it but it does work with the LEDs I have. I haven't killed one yet.

    • @photoswisscore
      @photoswisscore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because just the LED resistor limit the current inside, if you have something like this who will run more time, you will damage the LED or maybe more like output of your Rpi if you use directly from a GPIO

    • @Shaneyake
      @Shaneyake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Guillaume R I agree that you are correct and I would recommend that you do it that way. However in practice I have found it just fine to use 3.3V LEDs directly off GPIO. I have a controller that has been running this way for over a year and have no problems as of yet.

    and these lights: www.conrad.nl/nl/raspberry-pi-uitbreidingsprintplaat-lk-led10-red-10-mm-rood-1267848.html?sc.ref=Product%20Details

    Hey Shane I would like to do a similar thing. But in my project I am using a 8 relay board which I intend to connect it to my house. I want to use the raspberry Pi as a timer to switch on and off the relays. Can you help me in this. I am new to raspberry Pi. I don't know how to program and run it. I brought a Raspberry Pi model A+ so I just have 1 USB port. How do I program it without my PC. If possible can I have your email ID. It will be easier to discuss

      Linus Miranda Check other youtube vids to see how to connect a Pi to a Relay board. You can program directly on the Pi using SSH. If you want to use all 8 relay switches, you'll need an extra power supply (5V)

    • @linusmiranda
      @linusmiranda 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThatCoder I am trying to connect my Pi A+ to my network but its not connecting. Can you help me to program without using SSH. I want to program just using My Tv , mouse and keyboard. Can it be done?

      If you're running an OS that provides you with a graphical interface, you could use a text editor like gedit. If you're using a command line interface, you can use a command line text editor such as nano, pico, vi or vim. You just write your scripts to a file and run from that.

      That happens when the GPIO is already in use. Normally it will just throw that error but everything will work. if it doesn't try rebooting.

    unplugging the pi to reset it a bunch of times is bad advice my friend.You could nd up with a corrupted sd card before to long.I know from experince.If you miss it just type sudo reboot,or sudo halt..Are you guys to cheap for a 8dollar usb keyboard?

    • @Shaneyake

    hey buddy limit yourself to the automation please.Dnt cover the basics of Rpi there are already tons of those over the internet.Just tell us how the connection's go.In the 4th video you told that in the next video you will tell us about the software side of the system but you went to the basic's of GPIO.Please dnt cover that basic stuff.There are many video's about that.Limit yourself to the automation.
    Thanks

    • @Shaneyake
      @Shaneyake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I am wanting to cover everything from the basics to the more advanced stuff. My next video is going to be about basic GPIO which comes out this week so probably skip that one but the video after that is going to be about MQTT and how to get devices to start talking to each other.

    • @gauravharchwani
      @gauravharchwani 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Problem.But can you help me figure out the problem i am facing till then.
      I want to know what technology you used at software side ? Also how is your Rpi connected to other nodes which are Arduino's.
      I would be grateful to you if you can help me
      THanks

    • @Shaneyake
      @Shaneyake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The MQTT video will explain that, but the basic idea is that you run a MQTT broker/server on one of the raspberry pi's and all the others connect to that broker. MQTT allows you to send messages from one device to the next. I use the mosquitto broker which you can find here as well as the python library. mosquitto.org/ and this is the ardunio library. knolleary.net/arduino-client-for-mqtt/ but if you are having trouble understanding how to do it. I am hoping to do the MQTT video really soon. Hope that helps.

    • @gauravharchwani
      @gauravharchwani 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      When will you upload the MQTT video.I have to make the system in a week.Currently i am planning to use serial communication between Rpi and arduino but i dont think that option would be further scalable.Do you have some kind of documentation.Also MQTT can be used to turn the Arduino pins high and low right ?

    • @Shaneyake
      @Shaneyake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gaurav Harchwani I have just started planning the MQTT video so in a couple of weeks, sorry about that. So MQTT is kinda like serial it just runs over ethernet. I don't have any documentation of my own but the 2 links that I gave in the previous comment is pretty well documented. Also if you google Arduino MQTT tutorial there are a few tutorials. My day job is pretty hectic right now else I would make that video this week so sorry about that. What is your project? what are you trying to do?
