    It's so easy to do and if you want more days just use bigger bottles. Even 5L water jugs work for large plants/pots but they need support with sticks. Or can use 2-3 bottles for each plant when they need more water.

    I used this way to water when I went to Stockholm 1 1/2 weeks. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical when I was driving. But not only had the plants survived - they had grown so much and nicely that it looked like a small jungle in the kitchen. I was so happy, completely lyrical! 2 months is a long time.

    Thanks for the tip - it works, but some bottles are better than others I think. As an experiment I tried 0.5 litre water bottles in 2 baby carrot seedling boxes (18 inches by 9 inches and 9 inches deep), left for 4 days (3 nights) on my balcony which gets the sun in the morning and early afternoon. I live in a warm climate, in the Philippines. I put 2 bottles in each box, each bottle had 2 small holes near the centre of the cap. One bottle had a shallow neck, maybe 1cm long, the other maybe 3cm. in each container. The longer neck bottles were about 75% used up whilst the shallow necks had hardly drained at all (if at all). When I removed the bottles the soil at depth was lovely and moist and the seedlings were in perfect condition in both containers. We are going away again this week and I'll repeat, with the longer necked bottles; this time I'll try 4 holes versus 2 holes - I'll report back here if I get any useful results. BTW I think the softer bottles buckle too easily and inhibit the osmosis effect - I had soft bottles on 2 baby shrubs and hardly any water was used, maybe a few cc at most. Cheers.

      @@tasribarahman907 There was not any water left. I experimented more and found the water runs out in about 4-7 days depending on hole size/number. You could try using 2 bottles - one with 4 holes and another with 2 and putting both in the pot (if you have room)

    A very good way to normally water plants in the garden (not in pots), especially young plants is to use a normal size plastic bucket and drill a hole about 4mm in the bottom at one side. Fill the bucket with water and sit it next to the plant. The water will very slowly empty into the soil and give the plant a very deep watering. Plants love deep watering because that's where their roots are. A deep watering is much better than a few shallow waterings, especially in summer when shallow waterings will mostly evaporate.

    I put two 1 gallon buckets filled with water next to my plants, put some string between the buckets and of my pots (peppers and basils). Covered the buckets with plastic bags and went on vacation. Came home a little over a month later and the plants were still thriving, the peppers even flowering.

    I have used bottles in my garden to help keep it watered well. I have sloping garden beds with some runoff problems. I bury bottles (right side up) up to the top of the neck, with holes in the sides all around and a piece of stocking over the neck to keep soil out. I fill them to the top, multiple times, with the hose, and all that water now filters into the soil instead of running off. I will be adding long pieces of pvc pipe the same way, to deeply water. Much quicker too, than the "shower" setting on the spray nozzle.

    I have been doing that for years, I do that in my garden for small plants, specially new ones. From my experience on this, if you do like that some times it work and other times it doesn't or more accurately only one third of the bottle is empty .. I think the reason is the way you place it on the dirt, sometimes the whole is blocked by the dirt ground.
    Now if you dig little tiny hole up it will work fine but a faster, a liter lasted 5 days in hot summer 44c 110f approx. either that or make a one big hole in the cap only the size i use is the cross screw driver or as big as lentil hole. this video solution may work only if you are inspecting them well before leaving , making sure that that the holes are not blocked by dirt you need to observe the level of water moving down..
    You can put a big old kettle with water, soak any long strip of cotton from old clothes in the neck of the kettle,and run it through the neck holes to the bottom of the kettle (inside it), let the other end of the strip close to the root of the plant. Make sure the kettle level higher a bit than the plant soil, so it would ensure the dripping. this method always works! Always! except if the cloth, or the natural rope fiber become so old that it loses its absorption ability... for even better result you buy use small rope made of natural fiber. if you are leaving for longer, use big 5 liter plastic bottle, or 10 etc.. Cover the top part of the kettle with its lid to avoid evaporation . that is why 12 liter kettle (there are for parties, or restaurant..). Hope this help

    • @miffyanon4173
      @miffyanon4173 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing you're not referring to electric kettle, yet to see a 12 litre one in the market. But sounds like a good idea with the cloth, would the soak up fabric causes molds and bacteria growth?

    Great looking method! Doing a pilot test right now on the mint pot to see how it will go and to find out how many holes i should make. I think i made too many bc the water seems to go kinda fast. Stay tuned

    • @tornadav3237
      @tornadav3237 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will work and you have to adjust the number of holes and their size to restrict flow but not too much. Also please don't make a hole on the bottom of the bottle - water will come out too fast like that.
