Mixing A Pouring Medium For SheleeArt Blooms? And Trying A New Stand Mixer!

  • Did you know that “bloom pours” require a completely different pouring medium than other acrylic pours? Let’s mix some up today!
    Measured by weight, my recipe today is 1 part polycrylic to 3 parts Behr 8300 hi-gloss deep base house paint.
    I then mixed it with mica pigments at about 1/4 tsp. Mica per ounce of medium, and mixed it with tube paints at about 1:4 paint to medium. Additional polycrylic can be added to thin it as necessary.
    This resin stand mixer was AWESOME!! It had a nice grippy base so the cup didn’t spin around while the mixer was turning. It could be a total game-changer if you have large quantities of paint or resin to mix.

    Invented by Shelee Carruthers, the SheleeArt bloom technique involves three different pieces:
    1. A “pillow,” usually house paint straight from the can. Eggshell is best but any sheen should work.
    2. Paints or mica pigments, mixed with a specific pouring medium, recipe above!
    3. A “cell activator,” usually Amsterdam paint mixed 1:3 with Australian Floetrol. If you can’t afford that, try Amsterdam Titanium White mixed 2:1 with water instead!

    That's a nice bloom that you did. I used to use a paint base from Canadian Tire to mix paints and it worked fine. However when I began to use pigments I didn't get any shimmer or shine and I asked Jodi from Painted Dreamer about it. She said to put a drop of base on a colored material and let it dry. If it dries brownish it will be okay, but if it dries white that means that there is titanium in it, I think is the word, and it will block out the shine. So that was immensely helpful to know.

      Thank you! Yes, the clearer and glossier your base paint, the shinier it will be!

    I just used your discount on the link you posted and bought the deluxe mixer with stand...the very last item that I knew I would need before starting my paint and epoxy crafts! They also carry a safe, "no voc" type of resin... Thank you! 💜

      Yeah I have to think of what to use it for because I’m not sure how thoroughly it would mix a thick tube paint, but certainly it has a lot of potential! The smaller paddle helps a lot. These paddles are a really nice shape.

    Hello. Thank you so much for the very informative video. I’ve heard Shelee’s recipe before (several times), but for some reason you have a way of making it stick. As always I took notes because of all my failures so far.
    Your painting is super cool and the colors are amazing! I’ve been researching for colors along this same palette, so it’s now confirmed! Lol.

      You’re welcome! Just as a tip, bloom pours are probably the hardest technique in fluid art, and resin is a hard “finish” to get perfect. Don’t be ashamed of staying simple for a while! I have a whole playlist of techniques that are more beginner-friendly 😊

    Very cool!! So what makes this a bloom pour compared to other fluid art? Is it the blowing first and then the spinning? I need to look for Australian Floterol; I have American Floterol. We've done the dutch pour with the blow dryer and then the "regular" with the swiping of the activator and then tilting the canvas. I absolutely love this creative outlet!

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “Bloom” is about the recipe. There are blown blooms and bloom swipes and not all look like flowers 😆

    • @ler1354
      @ler1354 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnnaBlountArt ah! Ok so I guess we've mainly been doing bloom swipe! Can't wait to try something new! I'm now considering, because of a few of your videos, buying mica powders. We have been using acrylic paint, pour paint, and Microblend brand interior/exterior paint+primer in white. And Behr semigloss enamel as our pillow paints. We were also using a black semi gloss but I don't remember the brand. lol

    • @AnnaBlountArt

    Hi Anna. This was great as usual. I noticed that in the notes you wrote the PM as 3:1 Behr to Poly. But in the video, you said 2:1. I'm guessing the 2:1 from the video is correct, but then you added 2 more oz of Behr. Can you please clarify? Thanks

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I wasn’t sure what ratio I needed, so I started with 2:1 (2 oz poly and 4 oz house paint). But then I saw that I DID need more house paint, so I added 2 more oz.
      The final ratio was 3:1, so that’s what I put in the description box.

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ll need a gloss or semigloss interior wall/trim paint, untinted. “Deep base” - or what you’d use to mix a dark color is best, or “neutral base” works too.

    Is that a custom made
    Looks very convenient to work with.....

    • @AnnaBlountArt

      It is a custom top for a spinner. The slats are about 4” wide and the whole X was cut from a 20x20” square of plywood!

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hm, I haven’t made the recipe with triple thick polyurethane.
      For me, the polycrylic is the thinner ingredient, so I add more of it until it’s thin enough.
      I really don’t know what water would do to a bloom recipe but you can always try

  • @soozannah4555

    When you first started you said 2:1 then you went on to add 1 part polyacrylic and said you would add 4 parts Deep Base. 2:1 does not eqal 1 part Polyacrylic to 4 parts Deep Base . But I think you mixed 2 oz Polyacrylic to 4 oz Deep Base so that is correct. What am I missing here?

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I started by mixing it 2:1 Behr to Polycrylic. But after the first mix I decided that my mixture was too thin, so I added another 2oz of the deep base, making it 3:1 Behr to Polycrylic for the final ratio.

      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I said I’d start with 1:2 and see how it went. It turns out I DID need more house paint, so the final ratio is 1:3, or 2 ounces of polycrylic and 6 ounces of house paint.
