Norway // First Time on a Glacier

- Jostedalsbreen National Park is roughly a 4 hour drive north from Bergen, Norway. This Norwegian National Park contains not only majestic fjords but also one of Europes largest ice fields. It was the gigantic ice field that caught my eye as I scanned google earth in search of somewhere to go. The tough part of visiting Jostedalsbreen isn’t just the hassle of getting there, it’s picking what to do once you arrive. There are tons of options. Hiking, climbing, kayaking, river rafting, trail running, via ferratas, and glacier walks. I had Tyson with me so that narrowed my options. We decided to begin our Norwegian adventure with a walk on one of Jostedalsbreen’s most scenic glaciers, Austerdalsbreen. Tyson had never explored a glacier on foot. And I could tell by his subdued demeanor that he had some reservations.
I open TH-cam, I get a new Mediocre Amateur adventure? A fine Sunday indeed. You usually get me inspired to get outside every time you post a video, so thank you!!!!
Danny bringing pedestrians to extreme mountaineering adventures. The next leg of Mediocre. Excellent show guys! I love watching you do things I will never attempt. Right there with you from behind my screen!
Coincidentally I've just spent my summer holidays in Norway, 3 weeks in the North. It was my third time here, there are so many hidden gems in this country... This time the hidden gems were the Lyngen alps, and Senja island, gorgeous places. But if there is one word to describe Norwegian trails, it's mud. Everything revolves around the mud. Trails aren't that well maintained, sometimes there's duckboard sometimes there isn't, so you either do a detour, or you just get mud up to your knees. But like in your video, access to glacier in Norway is easy, and part of what makes this country great. Some glaciers are almost at sea level, and you can find a lot of them that are between 500 and 1500 m in elevation.
Another thing that makes the country great, and keeps me coming back, is the scenic roads. It is stunning to drive in Norway. The roads are in great shape, they go right by the water so often, they build many great lookout points, and they what keeps your days busy even in rainy conditions. It rains a lot in Norway, but fjords are still beautiful in grey weather when you can't hike. The final thing that keeps me coming is the lack of crowds. The busy month in Norway is July, just like in Sweden. A lot of schools reopen mid august, while in mainland Europe it's early september. Which means you can travel there late august and escape crowds, which is very rare for most touristy countries in the northern hemisphere.
I've been to the area where you are, and one MUST DO if you're not back to the US yet is to go see the musk oxen in the wild. They're terrifying beasts, but you have to see them. The one area I did was near the Kongsvoll train station, you can get some info there, and there's a trail on the west that goes up past the tree line pretty quickly, and then there they are on the plateau. Keep your distance as instructed on the signs, but it's such a rush to see an animal like that, really rare in the wild.
Sunday joy with Danny! Thank you!
Danny is such a good sport being a patient guide to his friend.
U know his friend won survivor right?? He’s not to shabby
@@Lisa-uc5rxlol I had no idea. Only ever watched the first survivor way back in the day.
@@philipwatkins-ow1isyeah he was on 3 seasons of survivor and he was on the challenge USA and made it far. Just google Tyson Apostle. Him and Danny also do a podcast with another survivor player Rob Cesternino.
Excellent visual treat. Thanks Danny. Can't wait to see more from your trip.
So glad to see you back! I've missed your amazing videos.
As a long time listener of News AF, I finally subscribed when Danny was nearing the 100k mark and I wanted to help him get there. I never knew I would enjoy this type of channel but here I am. This was awesome to see. I really enjoy your content Danny!
What a fun video in a new place with an old friend, good on you for respecting your friends boundaries and still having a great adventure. How sick is Norway! You don't always have to end up at the top of a peak for us to enjoy it!
Sometimes a feel bad that Danny's video's don't get more views, but then he doesn't dropped Tyson's name in the title! He is a former Survivor winner (and pickleball's top influencer) - imagine the reach he could get!
Danny really doesn’t care about views, just loves making videos. Talks about it on his podcast all the time
Wonderful. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Hoping for some more Norway.
Outstanding guys!! Driving those tunnels and narrow (2-way?) roads was probably the most dangerous part of the trip.
unexpected tyson collaboration love it
They have a podcast together if you didn’t know
Always a placer to watch your adventures! Regards from Spain!!
Tyson and Danny need to be on Amazing Race
No kidding! GREAT IDEA!!! 👍👍
that worthless show is scripted and fake
No kidding is that show still going??
@@colinayers3498 I hope not. They made an episode where I live and it exposed the fake and scripted nature of "reality" TV
I would love to see an MA team on something like the Eco Challenge (ie an adventure race).
Finally, an episode dropped!
Love your videos! Thank you very much!
Stunning scenery, amazing adventure! 😍 thank you for sharing!
Tyson Apostol from News AF! Great crossover video Danny!
Slow motion pickleball montage on a glacier next trip?
we did it guys
thanks
Those open glaciers where the crevasses are not covered with snow are fun and way more safe than the glaciers with snow bridges, but you probably didn't tell him right away.
Hey, that's my home county. I grew up a couple of hours from Veitastrond/Austerdalsbreen. When I was around 7 I had a close encounter with the goats that were kept around the parking lot back then. They wanted feed, I wanted to be left alone. We all ran.
You did it guys!
Did this exact trail couple years ago! The hut there is the most spectaculair hut ive ever been to!!! Really hope yall went there..
Keep waiting for you to casually run past him while he was walking ; long shot of course. Good job fellas!
We were just there up that same valley through that same rocky tunnel! Trekked on Austdalsbreen and kayaked with Ice Trolls guides.
The whole video I was like this guy looks just like Tyson from survivor… then I was like wait this guy sounds just like him too!!! Half way through I was like ok this is 100% Tyson from survivor LOL! One of the best survivor players ever!
Welcome (back) to Norway !!
Tyson, one of the all time Survivor greatest.
Wow beautiful! I would definitely have nervous diarrhea on that glacier!
My wife is a huge fan of the survivor Series and heard me listening to this video and asked if that was Tyson. She recognized his voice
I was hoping this would drop tonight ….yipppppie
Like before watching, as usual,
Nice, as usual! THANKS
Great video of a beautiful area!
Small personal story regarding this trail: I visited the glacier while on a trip in 2022 and on the path to the flat are (the one in the beginning with the water-filled ravine to the right) we met a farmer pushing his sheep along the trail. He came back from the glacier and went towards the parking / mountain hut, but was completely desperate and constantly calling for his shepherds dog. Turned out that one of his sheep had gone missing and his dog followed the sheep in order to protect it. Since we hadn't seen anything we couldn't help him, but just after he left with his herd we spotted the sheep and the dog down in the deep ravine full of rushing glacier water. There were just sitting in a relatively calm spot, but probably in danger of hypothermia. I rushed after the farmer and managed to show him the spot, but we could'nt get down to the ravine because we had no gear or rope. In the end we had to leave while he went to get help from fellow farmers and mountain rescue, but we never found out whether they arrived quick enough and the dog and sheep made it out alive...
Still thinking of this small but touching part of our trip
its awesome !! and im just watching , love this short easy hikes
Keep’em coming Danny. This one was great!
cool hike...way to go Tyson❣
Epic scenery!
I did that exact hike like 7 years ago and was excited to see this in my feed. Needed fewer emotions, just like a norwegian.
Pickleball’s top influencer!
Oh man! You’re in my neck of the woods! Well, almost… Come North! Look up Nesna! Great climbing opportunities!
I don’t know about all this pickleball talk, but I know that guy from one place. And that’s the best damn survivor contestant on earth.
Love the hat. I have run the Polar Night Marathon in Tromso, Norway in January. Lots of tunnels in Tromso as well.
you both looked like you had so much fun that i wish i could have been there too!
For a minute there I thought you were taking Gordon Lightfoot out for a hike.
Wow finally a hike that would even be within my limits 😂
Nice to see you do more casual things for once!
So happy to see Mediocre Amateur in my neighborhoods in Scandinavia 🤩 Much welcome brothers! 🙌🏻
This glacier walk was buzzing like it’s on crystal meth!

Best notification when you subscribe to this channel…new video.
Amazing experience '
Is that Tyson from Survivor?
Greetings from Bulgaria! New videos more often, please!
Incredible
Whether it's Norway or Peru they are all looking pretty sick these days
Epic! Only thing that would've been cooler would've been a Pickleball match on the Glacier. ;)
Oh man, if you ever want to ski Thompson Pass in AK I’ll hook you up! I’ve only been to Norway in the summer, super beautiful. The 18$ beer in Oslo made AK seem like a great deal 😃
"You could die... but we haven't, yet." Perfect.
Finally, a Mediocre Amateur adventure I think I could do. It's going on the list!
is this the legendary Tyson from SURVIVOR ????
Are there more videos from this Norway-trip on the way?
Awesome video! Let's at least hear an attempt of pronunciating the names next time ;)
8:54 he needs that bit of sarcasm to rub off from you 😅
Danny!!! I can’t believe it! I am hiking in Norway right now, 9/21/24!!!! No way!
Skeet dog is the goat
Low key hoping for a Killian collab during this trip.
✌️✌️
Which hoodie is Danny wearing?
Bummed out that Danny dint go all out on pronouncing the local names, usually the highlight of the intro
Anyone know what jacket Tyson is wearing? 6:35
Looks like a norwegian midlayer. Dale of Norway?
Waiting for Tyson on Ragnarok...
Two cool people from Utah county? Who knew?
"You could die. We haven't yet, though."
This is the motivational language I come to Mediocre Amateur to hear. 😂
Nervous diarrhea? Is that Blake in disguise?
Mr worldwide
Tyson needs to chill... oh wait i guess he literally did :)
