Just beware when doing this that there are certain situations you might be legally obligated to, at a minimum, identify yourself, and if you are asserting Fifth Amendment silence, you probably want to verbalize this intention to avoid any ambiguity (even in situations where you're not required to identify). Simply remaining silent on its own might not be good enough.

I've always taught my children when they walk up to an adult conversation they usually have to wait until the adults are done talking before the children are allowed to talk and rudely interrupt.
Yes, that's what i was taught and what i taught my child. It's just plain old common courtesy.
