Cindy Cindy was a wonderful wholesome singer and wrote many heart warming songs. This was always a particular favorite of my mother and brings back happy memories of sitting around the wireless set and all the family joining in with the chorus. Happy innocent days now sadly long gone😢
@bessamemucho I remember my grandmother explaining to me many years later that the reason it was not so popular (although a firm favourite in my family) is that she referenced a liking "to my wonderful bbc" as she put it, in the second verse. The BBC were forced to take it off air as it was seen as free advertising by the great and the good.
My granny used to love this song. It reminded her of her youthful days, She used to say that when she listens to the song and closes her eyes, the lyrics always bring back warm memories...
This little ditty was penned by Stogie Carmichael, Hoagy's younger brother. It was originally recorded by an all girl group known as the Jizzums but was placed as the b-side of their top 10 hit, "I Can Feel It Brushing My Tonsils ". Two years later Cindy heard it and thought, "If I don't blow it, I can have a real shot here" and the record shot up the charts. 3 marriages and 2 trips to the Betty Ford Clinic later, Cindy had an even bigger hit, " Can I Get Up Off My Knees Now" but soon left her career behind to pursue her real love, painting barns.
This song is actually in a film. It was performed by Frankie Avalon singing to Annette Funicello in the 1965 hit film ‘Beach Blanket Bingo.’ This film was one of many of the classic 1960’s teenage beach party genre films. Annette Funicello was a former Disney Mouseketeer and at the time of this film, still under contract with ‘Disney Films’. Walt Disney didn’t want a d*ck in a Mouseketeer’s mouth. (Other than his own.) The scene was scrapped and was reshot using two other actors in the film, Don Rickles and Paul Lynde. but that scene didn’t make the final cut either.

Ah, I am a sucker for ballad songs.
I wish I had a quarter for every time this song played on the high school cafeteria jukebox… I’d be a rich man
This oughta be the national anthem
