Top 5 Lovecraftian Films

  • Five of my favourite Lovecraftian films. These films I think best illustrate what a Lovecraftian film is like. Please note this excludes adaptations.
    If you like my video please say so. It lets me improve my video-making skills. Thanks for watching.
    Welcome to the Arkham Reporter channel. If you enjoy the works of H.P. Lovecraft, fellow cosmic horror/weird fiction writers, and the Lovecraft Mythos then welcome to our online cult. I don't upload as regularly as a good youtuber should but there is always new content in the works + monthly (at least) livestreams. Plus, this is a smaller channel so the people here are really friendly to talk with. If that sounds good to you then feel free to subscribe or join the Discord, Instagram or just email me.
    If you subscribe, please also click the bell icon. Some people have said my videos don't always show up.

    I will never monetize my channel. Every video I make is free for everyone to watch. There will never be secret content behind a pay wall. If you have a video request I will do it for free (if I have time + it's a good idea). To make a profit off the Mythos goes completely against what Lovecraft was about so I will never do that.
    I have a job and enough money to live & this channel is purely motivated by respect for Lovecraft, the Mythos and the fans thereof, but some people have asked if they could send me a tip just to say thanks. If you want to send me a couple bucks so I can have a couple beers or a cigar for free, well, I can't say no to that!

    Regarding "The Mist" and "In The Mouth Of Madness":
    I didn't like The Mist because the Mrs. Carmody character totally pissed me the fuck off. I have met too many religious people like her so it just angers me to have to hear that shit even if its just a film.
    And as for the other film, to be honest, it IS a good Lovecraftian film but remember this is just top 5. If I did top 10 I would have included it. It just didn't rouse as much interest as these 5 films did.

    • @ArkhamReporter
      @ArkhamReporter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah I know. I'm not a fan of the religious nutjob trope to be honest.

      Arkham Reporter if the intention was to piss you of then surely it deserves a spot because the acting and writing have you genuine emotions of hatred towards the character

      What can I say, I am a picky idiot. It's just one of my pet peeves... to see people suffer because of religious zealots.

    I gotta say aside from the obvious Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness, The Ninth Gate always stood out as lovecraftian to me. It's ability to build mystery, fear and tension around a book, secret societies and the unknown is wonderful, if underrated.

    I appreciate that this is your list, and I thank you for the movie suggestions. I agree with you on The Thing, Phantoms, and The Europa Report, and I'll have to check out the other two. On that note, have you seen Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness? It is by far the best portrayal of a man slowly losing his sanity as he begins to realize that the reality he thought existed may not be what he thinks. it also makes references to Great Old Ones and entities beyond our realm of existence and understanding, and even briefly shows some. It is one of those films that you can watch again and again and always discover something new.
    Also, for that creepy glimpse of things beyond our understanding, and humans feeling truly small in the universe, check out Event Horizon, if you haven't seen it already. I know both of these films star Sam Neill, but they're both really great Lovecraftian horror, and I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

    Sorcerer (1977)
    A not so obvious pick. By Friedkin, the director of the Exorcist. It is an underrated masterpiece.

    Although it doesn’t quite reside on the scary side, the movie Arrival really tackled lovecraftians ideals and the creatures themselves are really well done and very lovecraft based. The concepts and ideas it puts forth are quite above the comprehension of the human mind (if you put yourself in the protagonists shoes). It’s been a year since this video was posted but I highly recommend this movie.

  • @ilovelctr
    @ilovelctr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I really love this list for being non-mainstream. And I don't want to pretend I've watched these, or else it'd defeat the very purpose of recommendation. Out of these, The Thing is the only one I've watched, and without a doubt the most famous one. I really love The Thing, even though I don't think it quite fits the Lovecraftian horror genre, but it absolutely has cosmic elements.

    • @ArkhamReporter
      @ArkhamReporter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. I'm planning a REDUX of this video since there are some new additions. For example, check out a film called The Ritual. It's relatively new. Not set in the Mythos but the vibe is very, very satisfying.

    • @ilovelctr
      @ilovelctr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArkhamReporter Thanks for the info about The Ritual, which I will definitely check out. Not sure if you have watched/read Berserk, but perhaps you have because you've read manga Uzumaki. Imo, Berserk's lore and horror are very Lovecraftian, and on top of that, it has brilliant character development which isn't typically associated with Lovecraftian fictions.

      .... aaaand i am now a subscriber to this channel. Looking forward to it.
      To be honest, most horror movies make me laugh or yawn at this time - to be interesting they need to either have some interesting angle
      or a well build world with dread and horror always creeping in the background.
      I just saw " The Evil Within " this weekend and that was quite interesting, not really scary but they clearly wanted to do something new with
      the way they filmed it and mixed CGI, angles and different edit tricks to make it disturbing.Also any horror with Michael Berryman in it is interesting.

      Absolutely brilliant film, but as others have said, it's not exactly "Lovecraftian". The terror isn't otherworldly, in any way. Although, it can come across as such, visually, so it's not surprising it's often mistaken for Cosmic Horror. It's just one man's psyche trying desperately to hang onto life, as he is dying on an operating table in Vietnam. The entire film takes place in his dying mind.
      Fuckin eh, it's a banger of a film, though.
      In my top 5, personally.

    • @ArkhamReporter
      @ArkhamReporter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's true. And I'm replying to you after reading your other comment. If I think about it now I still don't like the film and I can tell you why. It is too human focused. The majority of the film is focused on them in the grocery store and then it focuses on the human politics (fighting for leadership of the group like in Lord of the Flies). Although I admit it is a great film it just doesn't suit my tastes.

    • @edgepixel8467
      @edgepixel8467 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After discovering I really dig horror movies, The Mist offered me a first glimpse into lovecraftian horror (which I wasn't familiar with). I might like others even more, but I really savored this first experience.
      The horrors invading our world were hinted at instead of portrayed in full detail; other movies show us the zombies, the vampires the demons; here, ANYTHING could be (and probably was) inside that mist. While other movies shock or disgust the audience, by means of scare tricks and gore, The Mist offers something I would call GENUINE horror and it's damn enticing.
      I saw The Void recently, and while the lovecraftian influence was visible, the last half of the movie let me down, it devolved into explicit gore and bloodbath and that usually bores me.
      Other than that, I find that I really connect with the theme of characters taking refuge somewhere; and we have that in The Mist, The Void, Dawn of the Dead. I also like mist in real life; there's that too.
      I guess what I really enjoy in horror is the suspense factor. When a movie devolves into all-hell-breaking-loose-blood-and-guts-everywhere (wink wink 30 Days of Night) I'm not engaged anymore; it becomes boring; it fails to understand what makes horror good.

Boy howdy did they ever mess with head. Perhaps I was a bit too young for them back then, but that unsuitability only added to the excitement of discovering them, and kept me interested all the way up until now.
    1. ALIEN
    2. John Carpenter's The THING
    3. Equinox
    4. In the Mouth of Madness
    5. Cast a Deadly Spell
    6(Bonus). The EVIL DEAD series. (Not really Lovecraftian as the others I realize, yet any such wonder to spring from the Necronomicon deserves mention. Especially EVIL DEAD II.

    1) The list cannot be wrong - it's *your* list and as such, other people cannot make that call.
    2) I was pleased to see you chose films not (only) because of strong/direct links to the mythos but included movies that give the viewer a sense of hopelessness and insignificance - a fundamental of everything HPL wrote.
    Finally, my top five choice...
    1) Event horizon

    I had never thought of "The Thing" as an Lovecraftian film, but I see your point. Overall, your list is interesting and excites my interest. I'd argue that the original "Alien" could be Lovecraftian. The title organism isn't any more evil than a shark or a crocodile; it sees humans as just another potential opponent and food source.

      Yeah, Alien is in all the lists of Lovecraftian films. But you know, I grew up with that franchise way before I even knew of HPL so in my mind I struggle to associate Alien with the Mythos. Then there’s the light and fun “14” by Peter Clines and the novela length “Agents of Dreamland” by Kaitlin R Kiernan that scratches the detective noir itch.
