The only issue I’ve had with the 878 Plus, along with a lot of other users, is maintaining the Bluetooth pairing. I’m pretty sure it is a firmware issue. And yes, the battery is HUGE! The radio feels like I’m holding a potato in my hand. There is a 2200maH battery available that really slims the radio down.

I am tempted to send it back to Bridgecom to get it programmed to one of their dv mega hotspots but it can't be that hard to get it going on my openSPOT2.
Tnx for the review :) Is it possible on this or any other Anytone to have a "split" zone like 2 different banks (with individuals channels) inside the zone like the TYT md 38-390?
Great video, thinking of buying this radio. The only thing is the closest DMR repeater is 17 1/2 miles away and there is only one around here. Main question is.... will I need a hotspot? Thank you again.
4:55 Roaming doesn't find repeaters based on GPS coordinates. It will look in the CPS for channels you marked as roaming and try those to see which has the best signal. If you're mobile and have enough programmed in, the radio can hop channels and stay on the same talkgroup throughout the journey.
Yup, uses RSSI to find the best repeater to use, not the GPS. Pretty handy if you live someplace where you have a large network of DMR like we do here in SoCal.

The mobile version of this radio is coming out this month (Nov, 2019) basically the same radio with DMR except it has triband in the USA (2M, 40CM, 1.25MM). The 220 mhz option will appeal to many. Anytone AT-578III PRO. Here:www.bridgecomsystems.com/products/at-d578uv
You have radios like I have guns. I'm thinking about getting back into HAM radio, I helped a HAM friend run a MARS station aboard ship in the 60's. I'm thinking about the Stryker SR-955hpc 10 Meter, any advice.
AdamosDad Same situation here. The difference is I use my radio every day. I took all 3 exams in August of 2018. I started with a Radioddity GD-77, and since have purchased a Retevis RT3S, and Anytone 878 Plus. The Retevis is the best entry level radio on the market for under $100. I don’t even mess with repeaters. I have 3 MMDVM hotspots running Pi-Star. Since I got into digital, I rarely get on analog or HF anymore.
Not sure how this can work, but: BridgeCom guy on Amazon page for this radio says "The radio is only capable of APRS transmitting. it does not have an APRS receiver." Guess it doesn't work w/o a hotspot, but I think one can use there phone as long as it is in touch with a cell tower? I'm confused.
Damn that's a nice radio....Definitely will give the big three a run for the money. If there were anything that you didn't like, compared to your other radios that are DMR capable, what would it be?
If anyone could way in on an issue I am having with the 878uv I would appreciate it. So I just bought it not long ago, finally was trying to get it up and running and come across an issue. I programmed in some local repeaters in my area, none over 10 miles, and I can not seem to make any contacts. On one of the repeaters about 6.5 miles away, I was able to get the CTC tone and hear it come back. THe status LED light is and has always been on a constant green, which tells me that there is acitivty but I am unable to get anyone. WHen I connect my 878 to my PC and using echolink software connected to the same repeater via DRM node I am able to make contact. I am using a Nagoya NA-320 and I have also tried using the stock anntena.
Belt clip fixes to battery ... I REALLY hate that. I've also heard it isn't Chirp programmable. Also, that the proprietary software only works under MS Windows and can be a little buggy... don't know if that's true, but it seems a bit silly limitation given the ubiquity of Chirp. Others have commented elsewhere that the belt clip is a little shallow for broader belts... and, from the video, it seems to me that the clip looks quite low. Others have also commented that the menu is a little awkward. Otherwise, it seems like decent little radio. I just wish I wouldn't have to clip all my spare batteries... it just costs more, takes up extra space in the bag and is a nuisance. Also - if anything fell from my belt, I'd far rather it was the battery than the radio.
I thought BridgeCom Systems advertises that they have it already set up, with code plug when you buy it. They advertise it plug n play. Not sure why he is going through all of this.....
(Digital Mobile Radio) It’s more technical, but offers a cleaner audio without static, but it only works or doesn’t, no in-between. It also offer digital modes that can send and receive digital packets of data as well as being able to attach to your computer to use with the radio to send email/text messages, etc.
Analog rules! Kenwood TH-D72 was the last decent analog radio with all the bells and whistles. If you have one, cherish it. They don't make real analogue radios like that anymore. What ever you buy these days, even the better brands like Yaesu, icom, kenwood all work with single chip digital circuitry mimicking analogue. Two HT radios I will always keep are Yaesu FT-60 (one tough, easy to use radio with beautiful sound quality and reception) and Kenwood TH-D72. The rest just comes and goes. Having said that, I am looking into DMR these days, just out of curiosity. I don't care if it has GPS, compass, APRS, bluetooth, wi-fi, color screen etc. For me those are nothing but waste of much limited battery life. What I need is just a decent, well built, simple, dual band DMR which can do local repeaters and access points. Any recommendations?
@@rd._874 no it's fake news.... if you have been paying attention France has wanted to take away those bands but the rest of the world uses those for ham the arrl has an article about it
Thanks for your review. It is very bad that they did not put an o-led display on this radio, like on the XIEGU G1M, so that can always watch the information. It was also possible to make a normal s-meter in analog mode. This is probably because the AnyTone company does not have enough radio amateur brains. They are only interested in money.
In my experience, analogue reception is poor (compared to CRT 4CF V2 and even to Baofeng GT-3TP, using the original antennas)! Moreover, it is very annoying that the lowest volume is still too high, and that changing the volume level interrupts the audio. Can't speak about digital capabilities, though - but I will send it back.
@@HamRadioConcepts Well, I have to correct my statement a bit... Sensitivity is quite okay (not great, though inferior to some other cheap radios, but not by much). BUT: The analogue squelch is way too insensitive, even at the lowest step (step 1)! There are some tricks using "test mode" settings, but this doesn't really improve anything. Weak stations that are still well readable, are blocked by the squelch, whilst radios such as Baofeng GT-3TP open the squelch just fine. I am not the only one who talks about that issue. Of course, if one does not care about weak stations/repeaters and analogue operation, one will not notice a problem. - And as to digital, I cannot say anything bad (because I did not do anything digital yet).
Te better ham radio DMR is a Yaesu radio and YSF2DMR. You don't need programming anything. You will have a radio without bugs not a beta tester's device. Also digital APRS is easier to do.
Hey Eric kc7 jdb Jeff from Lansing Michigan I've started my own TH-cam channel for automotive repair small engine repair and anything I can throw out their ham radio related I've been thinking about getting in the DMR but it's a lot of money to pay for radio when I'm not sure if it's going to be my thing looking forward to your giveaway and more content on this radio you just might encourage me the jumping the DMR 73 for now looking forward to more content
DMR blows for ham radio use. I made the mistake of first getting into it prior to d-star and fusion. The radios suck and the networks suck. The fm receiver in this radio ( I own one ) is terrible. If you simply want to use it for DMR and only DMR with the occasional use for fm, it might be ok, but it doesn’t hold a candle to radios like the ID-51 or the D74. The bundled battery also doesn’t charge anymore. Was purchased back in November 2019. The sound quality and dual slots are irrelevant when everything else about DMR for ham use is a fail.
This is not Plug and Play as they stated. Had mine for 24 hours and can't make it work with the hotspot and not one contact. Watched many videos but not one video that shows it working straight out of the box. So far just a paperweight
@@allenvestal4474 Might wanna' try listening to a law enforcement radio using P-25...no comparison. Ham radio digital audio sounds like it's underwater. They have a long way to go. FM is still top quality.

Look up Wireless Institute of Australia
I don't know of a single DMR radio that can be programmed by CHIRP. What happens when you mix commercial world with amateur world.
FYI, this radio does not support full function APRS. You will not be able to send aprs messages to email or cell sms.
Hello friend the nome of the your best optional antenna? thanks.
New Ham myself, just got my AnyTone, and my ID is KN4YZI...
Beware, the YZI sticks out like a sore thumb. People will see that on the screen and try to reply to you :)
Wow👍 Especially un radio de POLICE!!
I know it's a year out from making this video but it will txt radio to radio without a dmr repeater too.
It was probably programmed June 8. (DD-MM-YYYY). Most of the rest of the world does their dates that way. (YYYY-MM-DD might have been a better choice)
I thought BridgeCom Systems advertises that they have it already set up, with code plug when you buy it. They advertise it plug n play. Not sure why he is going through all of this.....
They do that for a fee.
now I can have the same radios NYNY in vegas had
What is DMR!?
(Digital Mobile Radio) It’s more technical, but offers a cleaner audio without static, but it only works or doesn’t, no in-between. It also offer digital modes that can send and receive digital packets of data as well as being able to attach to your computer to use with the radio to send email/text messages, etc.
Where do you get the Radio ID...I know how to get radio id from the radio, but yours is different??
Go to www.radioid.net/register#! you can register for your ID. Hope this helps
@@IIIEXOCETIII Thank you Jason..I found that...of course after I posted this question...lol
Well spoken Bora!!
Buy md380 dual band model or the 868 anytone
So just a question if I may. You did this video so you could have a free handheld? Very little learned for a new DMR person actually! Jimmy, WX9DX
WX9DX Just purchased this radio. Only contact I made was on 2 meter .. repeater.. (guess it’s gonna take a few days... ) 73 N4GHR
Good work mate
I just purchased one of the new Bluetooth models and I can't wait to get going with it. Thanks for your videos! 73 - KI5HYD
How do you feel about the commotion about the FCC taking down 2 meter and 70cm bands for the new 5G technology?
#fakenews
@@tdgreenbay No I'm actually serious, it's supposed to take place next year.
@@tdgreenbay Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/yBrX6gdeLbo/w-d-xo.html
@@rd._874 no it's fake news.... if you have been paying attention France has wanted to take away those bands but the rest of the world uses those for ham the arrl has an article about it
@@tdgreenbay Having no license for 2m and 70cm communication will cause chaos like on CB skip.
Most software is not Mac compatible. How bout Any Tone?
Nope
Death Metal! Oh, yeah 🤘
Causally mentions death metal lol.
Dimu Borgir gets a spin once in a while.
First, no sleep for you big guy ;)
Thanks
That’s weird, I find it much more sensitive on the receive..
@@HamRadioConcepts Well, I have to correct my statement a bit... Sensitivity is quite okay (not great, though inferior to some other cheap radios, but not by much).
BUT:
The analogue squelch is way too insensitive, even at the lowest step (step 1)!

A Hotspot will give you both DMR and DStar
Why,Why, WHY didd you wait Sooooo long to remove the screen protector??? AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! ;)
You're gonna need to toughen up, soldier... he always, always does that
I have a Yaeusu 8800 for my mobile that I bought in June 2014...still has the plastic on the screen :)
IF it was that easy to use .. why did they make 100 videos to show you how to use it ? :)
If it wasn’t easy to use, why do I have 2 of them?
@@HamRadioConcepts Are you Catholic? Guilt! :)
@@hypnosiscenternyc weird, I have no idea what that means??
Excellent video. Thank you. I'm sold! KG5IGJ
This is not Plug and Play as they stated. Had mine for 24 hours and can't make it work with the hotspot and not one contact. Watched many videos but not one video that shows it working straight out of the box. So far just a paperweight
What is so funny? I AM one of those OLD GUYS!
The TX/RX delay is why I never wanted to try DMR.
DMR, Fusion, D-Star...too many systems and no standards.
Audio quality makes up for that. I cringe now when I hears something analog.
@@allenvestal4474 Might wanna' try listening to a law enforcement radio using P-25...no comparison. Ham radio digital audio sounds like it's underwater. They have a long way to go. FM is still top quality.
@@apetercharlesstudio VHF and UHF repeaters within 3 miles of me. Even if I could remember CW couldn't figure out the call signs over the static. DMR repeater 11 miles away crystal clear. I prefer underwater to static.
@@allenvestal4474 3 mile range on your repeaters? Ya, repeaters are kinda' weird, the TX/RX antennas need to be placed on towers. ;)..Or, you might wanna' try a receive antenna. Repeaters around here, vhf/uhf typically have 30-40 mile range..Not sure what you're listening to.
