      I've actually been thinking about this, sort of. A fall-back to dial-up (never going to happen) would require website designers to cut out a lot of crap. Websites would have to return to mostly text-based, focused content. Webpages used to be a background color, a lot of text, and a few piece of relevant clipart--not a lot of data. Now most content is itself pictures and video with minimal text. It's harder to find information now because it's buried in video and pictures which can't be indexed like text can. The internet has gotten a lot harder to use in the last 10 to 15 years, despite being easier to search, because of these changes and the signal to noise ratio.

    Interesting video (as usual) 👌 but I think you were being biased. This is coming from a young adult who currently lives in a third world country. Digital technology has revolutionized our lives for the better, I understand what you mean when you talk about a paperback book or vinyl records but I'd say this is more of a first world problem. I personally think one needs balance in life & talking about social media I'd just say one needs to develop self control (once developed it can help a person throughout life). I wrote such a long answer as I love this channel & just wanted to express my views 😀

      I can't agree more. I live in a first world country, but I've never felt the need to use analogue alternatives to modern amenities, like you said it's more about self-control. I use whatever's most efficient, and I have to disagree with him about nostalgia; You can _absolutely_ have nostalgia for something you never personally experienced. You may have noticed all the western themed media popping up lately, that's still nostalgia, no matter how you slice it.

    Seven or eight years ago I took an analog photography class in high school, and I remember at the time I only joined because I was kinda proud of some shots I took on a dinky digital camera and I wanted to learn more. I had no idea what film was, and I didn't really know anything of the history of photography, or the resurgence in interest that was taking place. I remember at the time learning all of those things felt so fresh, mysterious, and strange, and I felt a new sense of meditative comfort in the darkroom. Digital photography does have its place, and as I've found myself using digital photography to emulate Kodak's old color infrared filmstocks, I can appreciate the convenience of seeing the shots then and there. It's not a matter of film being better, but it's an entirely different workflow. It's deeply personal, and it makes me so happy to see that more and more people are picking it up. Hell, after watching this I kinda want to take my Nikon out for a walk in the woods.

      May seem far-fetched for a comparision but take for example the atomic bomb. Before it, destruction in wars was big but never civilisation-threatening. You can just abolish nuclear weapons and go on with wars as usual or keep them and stopp war (at least big-scale ones). This necessitates leaders to have self-control and lay differences aside. People are easy to distract. Human Brains haven't changed, so they always must have been, there just wasn't anything to distract them. We can just abolish digital technologies and trick ourselves by using more primitive ones or learn self-control and benefit from everything it has to offer.

Digital exists now and most people are facing problems and are depressed cause of attention seeking digi tech so in order to point out the benifits of old analog tech and let people know bout them is only via using digi tech cause most of the people ARE using digi tech and those are the people that need to know and watch this video inorder for them to reduce digi tech and switch to analog afterwards and improve their life. • @pererau

    I love your channel, but this felt more like a freshman college presentation hastily compiled the night before after all your other ideas were shot down. It is full of fallacious arguments, gross generalizations, and presents a monochromatic worldview. Somewhat ironically, the presentation touts analog, while putting the world and the complex behaviors of humans into bits; either on or off.
    Yes, some prefer a book (my wife is that way), but many of those same people love the ability to have a music library with them and to be able to contact people via email and text (my wife is that way).
    I like books, but my astigmatic vision means that page after page of dense words are extremely difficult to handle, so my entertainment and education is largely from places like audible and TH-cam (#notasponser). I used to be a professional photographer and loved Fuji's ultra vivid 160 ISO. I had a very expensive all-manual Canon SLR with all the trappings... until the basement room I was starting in on a trip was flooded and everything was lost and ruined with the dirty water. This, combined with the declining vision and the fact that my dozens of binders of negatives were unwieldy (to say the least), meant moving to digital made the most sense, and now that I'm not working professionally, my phone camera suffices beautifully for my purposes without paying any extra costs, dealing with physical storage concerns, or worrying about lost or unreproducible negatives. It's still a quality degradation, but I always have my phone on me, and a great number of my best pictures in recent years have been photos obtained in random moments (walking to the car after work and witnessing mother nature's great fireworks, for instance).
    In this vein, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of similar stories and reasons that your examples don't take into account, not the least of which is the philanthropists who have helped give cell phones to third world countries where many of the people could not ever dream of having record collections, piles of books, or even access to libraries, cameras, doctors, education, or entertainment without said phones.
    I agree wholeheartedly with the idea that cell phone use in developed countries is oftentimes excessive and even divisive, but to make your argument, you've built up and pummeled a straw man without consider all the motivation factors. This kind of argument is below your normally-high bar.

    • @Unleetbeast
      @Unleetbeast 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I share you sentiment. While it's hard to argue against the idea that there is inherent intentionality to using old analog counterparts to our current digital technology, it's a pretty weak argument to claim that those objects present a superior experience in that regard. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I have no problem closing myself off from the tabs in my browser when I want to enjoy a personally curated playlist on Spotify. I could probably fit all the pictures I take on my phone in a year on less than a dozen rolls of film - surely fewer than a film camera enthusiast consumes. And I do scroll through them every month or so, remembering the good times and deleting the excess.
      My intention is not to come off as "holier than thou," but I really feel it's up to each person to bring intentionality to their own digital consumption/production. Everyone has their own addictions; I am no different. But to describe the relationship between our digital devices and us as "parasitic" is hyperbole practically to the point of click-bait. Just as he mentions balance, there is a balance to be had between the analog and digital experiences. Sometimes there is no substitute for the convenience that digital provides; to forego it entirely would be to miss out on unique experiences.

    • @pererau
      @pererau 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Unleetbeast I would contend that the"holier than thou" attitude is presented by the video rather than by you. What is being put forth is the idea that if you really love literature or music or photography, you are less intentioned and therefore interior to one who is "purposeful."
      I hold no ill thoughts against those that live a paper book or a vinyl record or anything else, and it doesn't sound like you do, either. The only argument around here that is connoting superiority is the subtext of the video.
      I don't even disagree with the main thrust of the essay: for some hobbies and tasks, a digital solution isn't necessarily a better one. Indeed, I subscribe whole heartedly to the sentiment (it's why I have a shelf of dozens of board games to play with my kids.)
      My issue is the condescension inherent in the idea that perhaps I'm less good because I play music off of Google Play while we game. (You know, from the playlist that I painstakingly researched and curated and edited to meet the needs of my family. So I guess there is intentionality there after all.)

    Part of the draw to analog, physical items I would say is also physical gratification. Music in the cloud, everything you would ever need to use being on a laptop (or on phones even), etc. is enormously convenient, but clunky, inconvenient, old physical forms feel nice. There’s reasons why people enjoy collecting vinyl (hell, I would just sift through stacks of records in a store before I had a turntable), musicians maintain and use physical multitrack recorders, photography enthusiasts use film cameras (esp. Polaroids), readers have bookshelves with paper books in their homes, and guitarists have sometimes walls stacked floor to ceiling with real tube amplifiers. Yes, new technologies are becoming increasingly more efficient, reliable, cheap, and cool in many respects, but the older stuff just feels nice and looks good, and it’s fun to hold something in our hands that’s more than a screen and microchips. Maybe manual transmissions will come back from the dead too...

    its interesting to see this happening in the US. Last time I was there, all the book stores and cd shops were closed. In Japan, there are book stores and cd shops on almost every street and there is a big market for used goods. I hope this kind of trend continues in the US!

      @Director Kid lamentably, an analog source of sound will never be greater to an digital MODERN source of sounds, in the 90' you could say that "yeah yeah, analog is always better" but: we reached the point where the quality is outrunning analog technology.
      You could say that analog is more appealing because of the clunkiness and all that stuff, gives a meaning to things, I would agree, but who says that digital can be equal as an "ritual"?.

      So he says that people who make a point of using analog media are the "I'm so quirky doe" kind of people, and in your attempt to counter this you have this sentence:
      "I mostly read Star Wars books. ik, ik, I'm a nerd lol"
      That's literally the kind of person he was referring to.

    • @milokojjones

      What people don't seem to get is, that those people don't do it because they want to be cool, but because it is their hobby and they enjoy it.
      I get why people are returning to these technologies, it not because they would be better than the new ones, it is because these people don't need to have everything in the most efficient way possible and using the analog technologies also makes them more connected to the medium - like the camera stuff - making a good photo with modern cameras on phones or other devices is easy, there is a lot of technologies that automatically set the light intake, picture brightness, etc. so that the image looks good. On the analog cameras this is much harder since you have to do these things yourself and even though this may seem like a bad thing, it is not - the more dificult something is, more joy you feel after completing it succesfully.

Prior to the invention of smartphones, people had to go to a specific place to access the internet, whereas now, people can take the internet with them wherever they go, which can cause a lot of distractions.

Now I don't know how old you are, or how developed your understanding of the world is, but the 60's were not the birth of electronic technology, the 1900's were actually quite advanced and only lacked few components that we have today (but of course ours are much more advanced overall e.g. better speakers, lights etc.

    Analog cameras and records are purchased for more or less the same reason people still care about paintings in the age of digital image files. It’s art, you want it to be unique, skillful, etc. An image file that a computer made for you isn’t very impressive unless you wrote the code. It’s the same with people hunting with bows and black powder rifles, etc., etc. People want to challenge themselves, be recognized for it, or make something beautiful without regard for how to do it most efficiently. It’s a rejection of capitalist thinking, in many ways. Or a rejection of mass market, cheap, disposable goods, anyway. Artists and businesses don’t have the same goals. There is, of course, some exceptions and overlap. Largely, though, I see it as a rejection of late capitalist throw away consumer culture.

    • @a43582
      @a43582 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i would disagree. the massive analog comeback is all about consumerism. it is a new trend, like "hey, look at me im oldschool! tech sucks, ive seen it in movies!", while some other people make money selling outdated devices for crazy money. social media are a problem, but the solution is to educate people, not to take stuff away from them

    • @a43582
      @a43582 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      and also analog is way more throwaway than digital, take camera film for example

    • @wcropp1
      @wcropp1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      a43582 that’s just a large part of it, IMO. There is no doubt it has become a trend unto itself. Sometimes “outdated” things can be more appealing than the new whiz bang stuff for good reasons, though, depending upon your goals. That’s all I’m saying. Some things were just genuinely better made in the past, like some hand tools. Not many people are using flashlights from the 80s, though. There are some idiots out there that will do anything, but there’s got to be some sort of appeal that isn’t obvious to most people, and that’s pretty subjective. People like being different/nostalgic and collecting hand made/artisanal goods, etc., etc. Paper books definitely kill more trees, which I don’t love, but I also stare at a screen enough watching videos to not want to do it while I’m reading. They’re worth owning, to me, but not objectively “better” for everyone and, as you said, not necessarily less “consumerist.” Another angle is that digital property is rather intangible-maybe people are so materialistic that they’ve got to have something physical to collect? It’s complicated, obviously.

    I was a very early adopter of technology (timesharing, email, PC, etc.) Today I am a sort of digital vagrant. I'm old.
    - Prefer books, but have no place to put them. My books are not easily replaced and are valuable as information. So I (destructively) scan them in.
    - Cell phone OFF all night, it stays on my desk, and doesn't come with me when I leave my house or office.
    - I use WhatsApp to communicate with people who I've known for a long time.
    - I use standard email to communicate with others, but always from a PC
    - Never used Facebook, never will. Security disaster.
    - I use Signal for voice communication. (Endorsed by a certain high profile NSA whistleblower, so it must be good)
    - I buy cheap smartphones (usually locked for a certain vendor), remove the SIM, and use them as pocket linux computers. (see Termux)
    - I still have my record turntables in storage, and certainly agree that vinyl sounds pretty good (Monty Python: Woody vs Tinny)
    I consider technology to be a one-way deal, the second it attempts to interact with me, forget it,

    For me (I’m 40 now) it is so that digital medium is crystal clear yes ! but in past we need more our imagination. Like the old computer games with pixel we had so much fun and fantasy. how everything look, work and feel in the game worlds when it would be not only pixel. Today everything is explained and graphic that you need no own fantasy anymore. Like Books, you think about the characters and what they see in your fantasy. It must not everything explained till the last bit! at Audio we had Not That crystal clear sound but all this noises make our cassette or vinyl a Special thing that only we had. Today I miss the most, that people do not meet in real, play records, talk about life. Today everybody use mobile phones and Wikipedia and explain everything till the last bit. Sometimes we should just lie on the ground, look in the sky and use our fantasy...the modern world is fascinating but It makes me sleepy and empty, maybe so it feels to get old ? You will find out

    Honestly ebook apps/sites like BookWalker got me back into reading more than fanfiction cuz of portability and BookWalker gave me access to books I’ve been wanting to read for literal years. However I’ve always preferred physical books. There’s just something about having it in your hands, seeing the cover art, wearing it down from over use, putting sticky notes in it or bookmarks from small artists. I grew up not being allowed much tech and I would DEVOUR books. Also there’s something satisfying about a shelf full of books and some books are out of print and always a find. Even though I mainly read on my phone, I always see books I want at the store and pick them up in case I’m able to read them later. But also I’m someone who wants to collect things like manga or comics so 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I guess I'm just an analog person who likes phones then
    do I use my camera? almost never. Not because I think I'm ugly but rather because there is literally nothing worth picturing in that moment, its like why are you taking a picture of yourself right now I don't get it are you that bored, I guess
    do I use social media? only when necessary. I check up on twitter and reddit primarily to see what's up on the world and read interesting things once in a while, but really you could argue I have them for display because I upload like 1 thing every 5 months because there is just nothing worth sharing
    the whole world has this odd obsession with "sharing" things now all of a sudden with social media and I just don't get it honestly, when I was a small kid people were still using nokia brick phones and they were still an analog novelty, now they are indeed a huge part of daily life but I don't think it is a parasitic or toxic relationship, I think this is because my experience with phones and technology comes down to playing videogames, drawing, coding and talking to people, sounds like a lot but its honestly not that much and I never feel saddened by social media because I don't spend enough time in the void for it to stare back, per say

    A lot of what I'm hearing here has nothing to do with the tech, but rather with mindfulness, which is a skill like any other intellectual faculty. It has to be developed and mantained. Granted different people will find different mediums easier to connect with in this way, but both digital cameras and film cameras require mindfulness and being present in the task to produce anything of significant quality.
    And dude, I grew up with photo albums stacked all over every house I ever entered in ancient days of the late 80's and 90's. Photo albums covered in dust and with pages stuck together because the sat without anyone going through them and appreciating the pictures within. Again, it's not about tech, people are people no matter the era.

    6:37 Speaking of preserving photos for future generations, do people realize that digital images degrade over time? If you back up your photos on an external hard, you need to back up everything again to new external drives every five to ten years because the hard drives degrade, too.
    And, what if you're _only_ storing your photos/videos in the cloud? Are you _sure_ the company storing your photos will be in business a hundred years from now? What if the company goes under? What if their servers get hacked or fail? I know large companies like Apple and Google may seem _"too big to fail,"_ but it *can* happen. It just seems like a lot of people put _all_ of their faith in cloud storage assuming these companies are going to be around forever and that future generations will have access their pictures and home movies.
    It's just something to think about.

    • @adamdapatsfan
      @adamdapatsfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But these are all balanced against the chance that your book gets torn or burnt, your image gets ripped or faded, and your vinyl cracks or warps. No format is, or will ever be, immune to the worst case. But being able to instantly make perfect copies for free makes digital the clear winner here. Why keep a book when you could store a million copies of that book for the same cost, and less weight and volume?
      If you're seriously worried about preservation, the answer isn't less technology, it's more. Run a RAID cluster to handle hard drive failure or corruption. Keep "offline" backups in powered-down external drives. Keep a cloud backup as well - hell, keep one on each free service. Use formats that perform lossless compression, or that are uncompressed and easy to support. If people put as much effort into preserving digital media as they did physical media, it would be far more fault-tolerant and long-lasting.

    unless your vinyl is older than 1980s then your vinyl, even if it is an analog medium, the recording was made from a digital source because studios started to use analog equipment in the 1980s. So your vinyl is far closer to that crappy highly compressed mp3
