  • HAIR TUTORIAL BY CASH LAWLESS
The retro Hollywood Hair How To, that has been requested by you guys on instagram is finally here. This is my first tutoria / hair how to, EVER so go easy on me. lol
I started with this hair how-to because it includes classic celebrity hairdressing techniques like Hollywood waves and Victory Rolls. Hollywood waves has been a long sought after celebrity hairstyle, but how to achieve Hollywood waves or victory rolls accurately is a hard lesson to come by. So here it is!
For years (before the youtube era) I amassed a collection of classic hairdressing books. I studied and practiced until my hands hurt. Some wigs took me more than 40 hours to create. I would attempt a style that took me 6 hours, only to get it wrong and have to start over. I spend a lot of time failing and hopefully I can share some of that knowledge with you and give you the shortcut I wish I had!

Please do more of these, I'm in love! I've been scouring the Internet for polished vintage styling tutorials and this was exactly what I was hoping to find. Could you explain more of the curl pattern used? Is there a heatless alternative?

Curl pattern is classic horizontal sides and back and diagonal back top. There are absolutely heatless versions which will actually get you more period correct texture. Foam rollers are the best alternative, second to hot rollers. Certain textures will require wet rollers but the marcel is by far the fastest.

@themillionairehairstylist i'm working with fine, porous hair....a lob of natural waves/curls that doesn't time hold curls/volume at the top of the head (heavy ends). it also has a hard time holding curls made with any hot tool. what process do you think would work best.....wet set, hot rollers, or blowout w/curling iron?

I love everything about this! Thank you so much for posting this. It was informative too. I like the really sculpted look and was wondering what I was missing. Only recently did I figure out a great curl pattern and the right sized rollers for the look that I wanted but, this video was icing on the cake. Thank you!

I want this with my natural hair but my hair is so heavy and thick. When ever I curl it it won’t even stay for an hour before they turn into beach waves

You warned about heat distribution when using a curling iron-to prevent amateur looking waves. Well guess what, this still looks pretty damn amateur.
You simply cannot do a proper 40s hairstyle with a curling iron. It has to be done with wet set pin curls. You mentioned not handling the curls too much as it makes the curls fall, well that’s the exact problem with a curling iron. Curls simply do not hold that well. But a wet set breaks down and rebuilds the hydrogen bonds of the hair much better so the curls are much better set.
Also, the middy haircut, the general haircut for these type of hairstyles is not that hard and is in fact much easier than today’s convoluted haircutting techniques!
