As far as I can figure, Maxim speaks Russian, Hebrew, English, German, French. In addition to probably being the greatest violinist in the world at present. In addition to being a dedicated son, husband, father and dog owner. In addition to being one of the kindest teachers and people in the world of music. This man surely has a brain and heart the size of a planet. If 81 year-olds are permitted to have a hero, then Maestro Vengerov is my hero. (Thank you for listening to my speech.)

17:00 V: You must let your violin be free. You play like you must control the violin (very rigid). Rather, you must direct your playing towards a direction, to phrasing etc
19:00 V: what is the meaning of the phrasing? S: It's to explain a story, once upon a time ... V: It's like a bridge between orchestra and the theme.
    20:42 V: You haven't found a way. .. Now you have an idea .
23:42 V: you must visualize your music.

Bravo, Leon! Although it would’ve been the hardest masterclass, being taken apart piece by piece, and continue playing whilst trying to keep all of these new ideas and commands in mind, all at once, Leon did so well, took so many things on board, and played so beautifully~.
Vengerov is an amazingly strong player (see the power and control at the tip of his bow). We know from other videos that he used to work out in gyms, and also that from the earliest age he was trained to play with the utmost power and projection. This all takes time and continuous work…
I enjoyed this masterclass very much, felt for Leon, but am deeply grateful too for his courage to stand on that stage and let us all share some of the learning with him.
Thank you so much to both of you! 🙏🙏

It's interesting. He didn't play it perfectly technique wise but I heard so much honesty in his performance I loved it.

The last problem they work on is interesting. I think it is clear what Vengerov wants, but it doesn't seem to click for a long time. He could have been persistent to solve the problem in slow tempo. Basically the students habits to not control the fingers and wrist and be too "relaxed"/uncontrolled there during the string change making it impossible for Vengerov to correct him. Also the high wrist position. Nice playing though! I could only dream to play the Tschaikowski like that :)

pretty much have relearn the string change mechanics which he has been so used to using. Really difficult to change this in a short space of time so kudos to Leon for giving a good go. Good lesson for all of us too!

    The pupil plays very nice.
However this piece is too rich and he simply didn't "digest" music enough in his limited practice time. That is the classical all times problem of every music learner. Basically he was at the end of the first rounds of technicalities learning, but just at the very start of phrasal interpretation and connecting the parts together. Quite understandably student has traded musical expression for technical performanse, because it is the basic to bring formal notes to outside somehow. So he did exactly that.
    All typical.
