Making a new CAT D11R Dozer Cylinder Rod | Machining & Welding

  • This video is a job we did to make a new hydraulic cylinder rod for a Caterpillar D11R Dozer blade lift cylinder. The rod has a big groove in it and the chrome is damaged so needs to be replaced. The cylinder rod eye bearing also has some damaged. This shows the step by step process to make the new cylinder rod including machining and welding. To start, we machine and part the eye off the cylinder rod before pushing out the damaged bearing from the eye using our 150T tonne hydraulic press. We machine up the new cylinder rod using a 4” inch diameter induction hardened chrome bar. We need to machine both ends of the cylinder rod, the first end we machine through the induction hardened chrome layer before turning down the OD to fit the piston and cutting the 12tpi external thread for the nut. Then we machine the other end of the rod to weld prep for the rod eye by machining a bevel and drilling a hole for the eye spigot. The eye is welded on using metal cored wire and because the customer wants the rod to look as standard as possible we set it back up in the lathe and machine down the weld. The new busing we cryo freeze and shrink fit with liquid nitrogen. We finish it off with a quick paint job before cleaning, wrapping and strapping the new rod and send it on it’s way to the customer.
In this video we are using:
    - TM-26120G Centre Lathe
    - WIA 500i Weldmatic welder
    - HMP-150T Hydraulic press

We like to pass the time together watching your videos. Any other similar videos we watched together my father would include a hundred comments on how they are not doing something properly. Not yours though, he’s says your videos and also workmanship are a model of excellence. I enjoy the fact that you use your head not your back in moving heavy objects around. @mashrien yea I genuinely can't figure what Adam's goals are anymore. He built a nice new shop and stocked it with a lot of nice toys but all that seems just to support his hobby and make a video twice a year. I don't think it's an advertised business to make money.

WOOHOO, It must be Friday. I know what your outback folks deal with now. We are breaking temp records. It will be 46C+ here today. We are normally at 23C. Very dangerous for many of us. Friends are here as I have some AC. No silver pouring till this breaks. I have always preferred the Induction hardened bar as they can be repaired as verse to chrome as you well know. We used a fluid type buildup as it is done cold. I never tire of seeing these done. It is funny to see the toolbox drawers missing behind the lathe. There as a nice comparison to just how long the new lathe is as well. Your pup is always a happy fella, LOL and that oil can is just way too cool. A hand made beauty indeed. It is incredible to see the tooling tech now compared to 50 years ago. That 25mm drill style and ceramics weren't even thought of as carbide was just in its infancy. High speed was still commonly used when I was a pup in school. For hardened pieces lengthy grinding operations were a regular occurance. I may be old school but I sure am digging this stuff eh. Well mate, Tis another thing of beauty. I hope your having a great weekend my friends.

Hey mate hope it starts to cool down for you all soon! That is very hot, where we are in summer it usually tops at about 40°C but very humid and muggy which isn't nice. You always pick up on the little details in the vids! Yeah lots of awesome tools available these days definitely makes the job easier. Take care, cheers 😎👍

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering The ceramics are sooooo wonderful. I can't count how many carbides I have wasted trying to buck my way through chrome and induction hardened pieces. Same shit here today. It kind of sucks as the casting sand produces better finishes so damned if ya do and damned if ya don't, eh......
