  • The Bubble is an essential groove to know for any keyboard player who may ever need to play some Reggae. In this video, we look at the basic pattern and feel, along with a couple variations and a tip on the best organ sounds to use.
    This video is part of a series for keyboard players who are working towards a career in music, Each week we look at the basics of reading chord changes in a particular style of music, and talk about the stylistic elements that give each genre its unique sound, as well as practical tips for gigging and recording situations that could come up.

    I got some additional tips, as I am a reggae keyboard player myself. For the offbeat in the right hand, people often use a piano or rhodes sound, which sounds better to my ears. If you only have an organ, that's okay as well. Right hand is more likely to be played staccato, so more like an eighth or sixteenth note. For Bubble variations you can play to two eigh notes on the offbeat instead of 16th notes before and after the offbeat or add some syncopes and hold the next note a bit longer. Nice Video mate, appreciate it.

    Thats different. Growing up in the islands and every music i heard or played was reggae. Always drum and bass first in that order. All the other melodies came after drum and bass foundation or root of the reggae beat. Its what we call the heart beat which is also from the nayahbingi drum. He did it differently but it turned out great.

    keep it up with these funkier genres man. You did get with your Montundo Salsa, keep exploring. You said it yourself, there are miles of material to cover with these. Reggae off-beat is so weird to settle into but once you do it just keeps up like riding a bike.
    Anyone else feel the kinda phantom limb syndrome when you start since the fingering is so staccato? Like playing a baby drum.

    @1:39 The sheet music you are showing, when input into my DAW, does not have the same rhythm as what you are playing. If I play it in manually with my midi keyboard, and get very close to the sound your producing, the timing shown in the DAW (space between notes) is not what seen on your video (sheet music you have on top of the video). What am I missing? Thanks.

    • @JeffLearman
      @JeffLearman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're counting it wrong. His right hand is playing on 2 and 4, just as written in the staff notation. Left hand is playing every upbeat (every other 8th note, all syncopated.) The bass is the only instrument playing on 1. In Reggae, the bass owns 1, everyone else keep out!

    Really the 'bubble' is actually just the left hand doing all the off beat semiquavers trying to sound like a conga or percussion instrument that gets your head bobbing, the right hand should play staccato chords up high in unison with the rhythm guitar 'skank' on the two and four with a different sound like piano for that classic roots reggae...
