- Utah Rwy 9010 is leading a coal train at Kyune with 6 units up front, the third being a 5000 hp CAT. 6 units are at mid-train with one being an F45 and aSD20. Check for the flaming exhaust on the MK5000C in the fall away at the signals. Video taken April 2001. Thanks for watching...

At one time it was an SD18. It was rebuilt and owned by the Illinois Central, and don't know what it was classed as after rebuild. It is now owned by NREX and was leased to the Utah RWY. Thanks for looking. Jack...
It was a very long train, and the posability of pulling a knuckle is less if the helpers are in the middle. Thanks for looking. Jack...
Because once they get this train over the mountain, they can take the middle six units out, and the train can then make the rest of the trip to its final destination with just 6 units, and one crew. This saves the railroad the fuel, ware and tare of six more units, and the cost of a crew for that trip. Thanks for looking. Jackmp294
Great sounding diesels!
Thanks... Correction is made... Thanks for looking. Jackmp294
Yes it is. They did sound pretty neat. Now they all been rebuilt and have a regular EMD in them, and are re-classed as SD40-3's. They also lost a rear fan in the rebuild. Went from four to three rear fans. Thanks for looking. Jack...
Great video but I think you'll find the "flaming exhaust" is actually the headlight of the loco(which is cab trailing) lighting up the exhaust of the loco behind.
Awesome sound! Brought back great memories of WC SD45s working up grade.
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying them. I love to take this series, and crank up the speakers. Sounds fantastic! The CSX mainline is just steps from my front porch, and everytime I turn these up on the computer, my wife thinks there is a train roaring by the house! LOL. Thanks for watching...
Cool video. Love shooting Utah Railway.
MAN, I WISH THAT I COULD SEE TRAINS LIKE THAT!
I love the sound of those locomotives!
AWESOME!
Seeing and hearing twelve locomotives pushing at notch 8 gives me goosebumps. You can clearly hear that Cat 3612 when it passes under the bridge. Just Wow.
WHAT A POWER. I can feel it!!!!!!! so COOL!!!!
Cool video, great sounds.
I listened again and you seems to be right.
Aside of the 6 mile 1.1 % grade of Byron Hill here in WI., we don't have anything even remotely close to this. Awesome, awesome videos!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it... Take care.
there is no sound better than that much horsepower passing under you at full blast. I watched this video at least 5 times in the past 3 days.
Another excellent video, Jack!
Notice that the 6th locomotive was shut down
Jack,
I have watched this vid as well as the other and there is no greater sound the 645s in
RUN EIGHT! BRAVO EMD!
AMEN to that Don. They sure do sound fantastic, and trying to find a full set these beauties in action is getting harder all the time. Thanks for watching...
cool how you get blasted by the sound right above the exhaust
brouf, brouf, brouf... i like the sound from the fans :))
No, the lone F45 is gone, also the SD40's are gone, and the MK5000 have lost there prime mover and where made into SD40-3's.
Great video Jack!! As Always!! Ty
Jack, you have some really cool videos!!
I love when the 4th unit goes under the bridge.... GROWL!
Too bad it didn't work out
I don't know where the SD40's have gone, but last I heard, they have the MK5000, which had the 5000hp Cats removed, and have been rebuilt into EMD SD40-3's. They also have some SD50's or SD60's. Thanks for looking. Jack...
nice turbocharger whine... :)
They work the same in either direction, only the lead unit needs to be facing forwards. Train locomotives can't just turn themselves around ya know :P (without a turntable or switching methods that all yards don't necessarily have).
But they usually just pick one locomotive thats facing forwards for the front, and leave the rest however they were. Then when its time to go back the other direction, they just pick one of the "backwards" locomotives to put in front again.
What happened to the SD40s and what engines powers Utah Railway's coal drags now?
8 and sand!!!!!!!
Great video, but why do they put the helpers in the middle?would it not be easier to put them on the rear, then they could disconnect on the move.
Ah, just like the Tennessee Pass!
Jack can you please tell me all its tecnacal data abaot this train, like how long it is and its weight. then i can built it in trainz 2009. please!!!! This train is mine favourite of all time!! please make more of this train, vids!!!! utah rwy
How hard is it to steer one of those giant engines? I assume modern locomotives have power steering, but what about the old steam engines?
I also have a video with UP 26000+ hp that had the helpers on the rear. As you can see, they did pull a knuckle in their try of getting up to Soldier Summit. Jack...
#8 it is, and their doing a fine job of it!!! Thanks for watching. Jackmp294
The ex IC SD20 in there sounds great also. How many did they get?
@gonetoworkbbackin5mi There is a crew on the second set of helpers. If any of the units has a malfuction, it will shut itself down, and an alarm will go off alerting the crew. If you look at one of my other videos, "Soldier Summit, 36000hp+, you will see a crew member walking down the second unit. He must be getting ready to check something out...
hui, are there really 12 units in one one large train? how long ist the train ?
i wish had something like this in germany
Nowadays they would probably use Locotrol remote control for the mid-train power and just use one crew at the head end. How much weight would be in the whole train? Sorry if you mentioned it somewhere and I missed it. I would think it would be hard to balance the power with that many locos and presumably two crews working together.
damn nothin like screamin emds!
Hi, Jack,
Thanks for responding back so soon.
Regarding SD-40-2: did you see that in late 2010 and 2011 UP recalled it's entire fleet of SD-40-2s for REBUILTS, REFITS, and
REPAINTS? They were brought to their Juniata Plant in Altoona, PA and also had installed the NEXSIS III ZTR units as well.
Why would UP spend so much money on 40-45 year old locos?
I believe by doing so they will around for another 40-45 years!
Keep up the great shoots!
