Is it true that temperatures in the engine room were well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit?
@@castironpenguin Think about it, you run a diesel sub on the surface using diesel electric power for propulsion and to run compressors to put air under pressure( need lots of air to blow out the water in the ballast tanks), the engines get hot running (just like a car), Then you dive, all bulkhead hatches get closed isolating all compartments, the engines stop, the engine, start to give off heat, temps in the 2 engine rooms spikes, the sub secures from dive mode, bulkhead hatches get opened and the heat gets circulated throughout the sub. Yup it gets hot pretty quick and over the 100* mark

Can you just imagine what it would be like to be submerged with enemy destroyers above you dropping powerful depth charges all around the sub? Pure terror!
I served aboard the USS Picuda (SS382) back in the mid-60's. This video really brought back a lot of memories about my time at sea in these cramped quarters. Thanks for posting!

We don't need an individual who believes that it is a given that a servicemen will be adversely effected by service to his country criticizing those who do so honorably. Learn how to read before you express your contempt and you won't appear nearly as ignorant as you presently do. He said only that the video brought back memories' without mention of whether they were good or bad. Charley did, however, remark that the quarters were in fact cramped. Sounds depressing, eh? Maybe even anxiety inducing?I know that you think that you are serving your country when you pull that lever for the Democrat / Socialist / Communist party...but that is not how freedom works. Really, it's not. Kumbaya.
Charley, I also served on the Picuda, in the early 70's. I was on the decommissioning crew in 1972, when we turned the boat over to Spain.

It was lot roomier than I thought, but than again it didn't have a full crew on. And that kid was particularly annoying.
Yea compared with the German submarine this ones are luxury boats :)

This sub has the distinction of sinking the last Japanese ship in WWII. She wasn't carrying the full complement of 24 torpedoes so yeah the fore and aft torpedo rooms were spacious feeling. It's a great boat to tour as well as the light ship and the Coast Guard corvette( it's the last ship afloat that was at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th during the attack. If you do visit make time to go to Annapolis Naval Academy naval museum (35 min drive) well worth it.

Served on the USS Catfish in the late 50's early 60's. Wonderful memories of patrols made in northern pacific, down to the Phillipines and upkeep in Yokosuka, Japan. At 81 the memory gets a little foggier each year. Thanks for the refresher. Come see the USS drum in Mobile Alabama, well done on bringing her back to life. DBF.
What was the lighting like back then inship. I noticed that these modern museam ships almost always have modern lights in them either LED, FLorescent, or mercury halide which are all brighter and give unique lighting color. So what was the lighting like back then? I imagine it was darker.

I marvel at the engineering and design process that they went through to create something like this, all before the age of computers.
They had computers. They were Electro-Mechanical. The Torpedo Data Computer up in the conning tower to comput speed, course and range to the targets. American subs were called the Cadillacs of Submarines. Long Range, Speed, Air Conditioned and loads of fresh food.

I was Navy...got to see an old FLEET Type Sub when in Norfolk Navy base, the "Destroyer Piers"...way back in the late 1950s...same year I got to see Amsterdam, Netherlands...enjoyed the most of my Navy time...got to see the world...

Cool, thanks for the walk-through! It looks a little roomier than it really would have been because of the removal of some equipment, specifically racks and bunks in the torpedo rooms, and that maneuvering room looked luxurious without the electrical cubicle.
My observations: Very similar to a Gato, but the most striking differences to me were the control panels on the forward bulkhead of the maneuvering room (aft of the cubicle on a Gato, at least with GMs), and the sonar room in the forward torpedo room. The shafts of the sonar heads run just forward of that bulkhead on either side of the door in a Gato, but the operator is actually located up in the conning tower, the sonar room omitted.
The galley is also a lot more open than the boat I am used to. A very small serving window on an EbC Gato.
Maneuvering is a "split" cubical not a single as is see on most boats. This put the switches below the decks making it roomier.
It's funny what you notice. For me it was the Fairbanks-Morse diesel engine that was made in my hometown of Beloit WI, and the Taylor soft-serve ice cream machine made in South Beloit.
Forget old cars, give me an old submarine to restore

Enjoyed the video, was well paced got to see a lot, thanks to the camera person. Good to see the Americans thought of a lot of home comforts even in so small a space and in comparison to what the Germans had in their U - Boats, I would definitely choose the U.S boats. Small comforts adds to high morale. The boat was very well planned out compared to the U Boat video I seen, that was very cramped. My hat off to the serviceman/women serving on submarines and in the armed forces full stop!!!

Thank you so very much for posting this video. I have wondered about the inside of a sub for a while now, well it's even smaller than I imagined. Are they all like this or is this a small sub?
That is a large and relatively uncramped sub.
Small sub? Kriegsmariners would be amazed at the living conditions on this thing!
This is actually small, i served aboard the USS Pargo SSN 650 IN 1977-1979, fast attack nuclear boat and it's definitely bigger than the old diesel boats.
Show up FIRST in line in the morning. Get good video at your pace without other guests.
This is a first class facility to spend time and live inside. I would love to live in such high standards of living.
There are two combat submarines in Taiwan listed as the oldest combat submarine on duty in the world for more than 70 years. A few years ago, the Taiwan government and international friends worked together to unload eight pieces and replace old parts to replace deformed pressure shells and combat and control. The system is improved to be able to dive 150 meters deep in the sea, resurrecting the old submarine

I toured the Torsk in the early 90's. Still have my collectors coffee mug that says USS Torsk - 423, 11,884 dives...The Divinest Submarine.
imagine about 10 officers and a around 70 crew members hot racking all the time.. you wonder how anyone got any sleep.

It's sad the inside doesn't look like this anymore. You'd think they would try to keep her polished and cleaned out of respect for the men who served on her. It still was an amazing experience though.
I have slept on that submarine before with my Boy Scout troop I highly recommend it

US fleet subs were palatial compared to a 7c Uboat. I've been aboard both.
Really cramped conditions but at least the crew had good chow.
In turns of living standard, daily necessities , galley , sleeping area & work space It is much much better than a U-boat !

Air conditioned too, the German Type VIIs were simply war machines, like Star Fleet vs Klingons.
Alas, still in the water. I like it much better when these historic ships get removed from that source of corrosion and even better when they're placed inside. They'll last much longer.

Quite true. HMS Walrus visited our base for about a week in '68 and I hung out with a couple of the blokes. Super great guys and they still had daily rations back then. Rum's still my favorite drink. Totally different design concept inside. One of the guys wanted to trade his submarine sweater for my pea coat, wish I had done it.

Nope.sorry. I couldnt spend weeks or months in there knowing the only thing keeping me dry and alive is a few cms of steel and some engineering that must work. Even the tour in dock gives me the eebie jeebies. Wheres the exit and daylight?to the crew who worked on this you have brave souls.

Compared to the German U-boat in the movie "Das Boot" that sub was roomy. It even had two kitchens.
That can be traced straight back to doctrinal use. German Type VII subs of the period (including that portrayed in Das Boot) were really only designed to patrol and sink shipping in the North Atlantic, the North Sea, and the Baltic, and so didn't have much space wasted on separate galleys for the ratings and officers. On the other hand, American subs in the Pacific were designed to act as a smaller part of a much larger fleet and were primarily scouts with the added ability to sink merchant ships and targets of opportunity. Thusly they were built with endurance for long patrols in mind, across the wide expanse of the Pacific. Hell, the later models even had totally air-conditioned interiors. Can't beat that.
All food was prepared in the galley (after battery) and the stewards carried it up forward to the officers. Pretty much all they had in the officer's galley was a hot plate and coffee.

All the subs were identical and three builders, moving from one boat to another everything is in the same place.
NO, not really. There was loads of differences. That is why you had to requalify each time you went to another boat.
