    Hey guys, Rory Stewart is no longer a Tory MP, but presents a brilliant podcast (The Rest is Politics) with Alastair Campbell (who worked closely with Tony Blair). I’m a labour supporter, but Rory is an extremely intelligent, thoughtful and measured conservative commentator who has long detested Johnson.

    • @maejohl
      @maejohl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rory would actually be a very good prime minister were it not for the fact (utterly irrelevant but hey, we live with the media madness) he looks like Wallace from Wallace & Grommit, so is for ever unelectable. Even in the UK. Such a shame - I am not a Tory but Rory spits facts day in day out.

      Saw him on LBC yesterday or earlier today and yeah he seemed pretty exhausted but was still insightful while being bluntly honest about what BoJangles is doing to the UK/Tory party.
      Started paying attention to UK politics around Brexit but didn't start following closely until I realized how insidious the populism and austerity had gotten - not to mention the similarities to what has been going on here in the States. Some silly republicans of the never Trumper variety were joking that "at least they wont have to worry about him summoning a mob and storming the parliament or Buckingham" and I was like, ehhhh idk guys, while it probably wouldnt be nearly as destructive or dramatic, he's reckless. I didnt seriously consider something Jan 6th like happening though until he sacked Gove. That's when I went "oh sht hes reached panicking yet deluding himself cornered animal levels of desperation"
      Anyway hopefully the Tories keep the spine they found and make sure he really does leave. They have plenty of time to get the wallpaper off the walls at least 😆

    • @MMuraseofSandvich
      @MMuraseofSandvich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't agree with PM Abe on a number of things (mainly his involvement with a political group that gets off on flipping the bird to Korea and China by worshiping war criminals at Yasukuni), but seeing him assassinated leaves me sad and disappointed. The perpetrator was a former sailor in the maritime JSDF, and he thought Abe was a member of an organization no one's heard of-- possible radicalization via conspiracy theory, mixed with "middle aged man with undiagnosed disorders and knowledge of deadly weapons of war".
      The military/police in Japan have historically had a serious problem with radicalization and violence, and yet these are the ones with the most severe symptoms of Japan's societal problem that involves abuse, bullying, and ostracism. Best case scenario, they'll start taking a comprehensive and holistic approach to the problem. But they'll probably hang the perpetrator, beef up security at stump speeches, and consider the matter closed. Few things stymie progress more than the Japanese question, "If we change something fundamentally, who's gonna take responsibility if it all goes wrong?"

    I'm a huge fan but would say the question to Lammy about a written constitution as a weakness in the British political system falls into the American exceptionalism trait. The idea 'lets write it down!' fixes things when we see that actually it has contributed to some of the worst problems within the house, senate and therefore supreme court resulting in a originalism being a possible outcome

  • @lingfongchung2

    I liked hearing from MP Lammy! I like how he made a point that behind the populism there was no plan. I think he is right that we progressives need to work on our language and rhetoric to be clear that we are working with everyone on bread and butter issues.

    • @tweda4
      @tweda4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that simple. I don't vote conservative anymore because they don't operate in the interests of the public, but they can't be blamed for Brexit going poorly. That title goes to the other parties (very much including labour) that stymied any progress on talks with the EU for the first year and a half by not allowing the government to enact corresponding legislation.
      That's why the Tories got a massive majority after the latest election, because they were clearly the only party which had any interest in even trying to get Brexit done, and the public could clearly see what the other parties were really doing.

    What makes me really angry is, these people will NEVER have to take responsibility. They‘re always lucky…
    Yep, everybody said the UK will suffer economically for leaving the EU. And now they are suffering and they will be suffering.
    However, we have a GLOBAL economic crisis! Yes, the UK will do a lot worse than everybody else, because of Brexit, but the Brexiters will now have an excuse, where they can say they are just doing poorly because of the global state of things.
    They ALWAYS find excuses.

    Lovely to see our Lammy on Pod Save the World!
    Steve Bray playing the Benny HIll theme song as Boris was giving his 'farewell speech' was Peak British at it's savage best - nothing will top that! Except for the fact that Hugh Grant requested it! Like 45, he had to be dragged kicking and screaming to leave - although he's still squatting at No.10. And everything that Johnson does is with cynical self-interest, including Johnson's relationship with Zolensky, desperately syphoning that reflected glory off a man who's a real hero to his people. Johnson thought he was Churchill, ended up being Chamberlain and has now earned the moniker of the worst Prime Minister in UK history!

    Much as I deplore Boris Johnson's pathological mendacity, and am relieved that he has finally resigned, it should not be forgotten that his path to power was in many ways facilitated by more than a decade in which the opposition, under two leaders, never looked like a credible party of government. For all David Lamy's fine words, I remain to be convinced that Keir Starmer has a firm control over his party, and can offer the country a credible alternative to the Tories. Which is pretty disappointing, given how royally they've fucked us all over.

    It's not that the center left is doing great worldwide: What is going on is that pretty much every party in power is getting battered by global conditions, and the center left was rarely in power. Look instead at the places where the center left was in power: the US and Spain. You already know how tough a road for the elections looks like in the US, and only supreme court craziness might slow this down. the Spanish government just got battered in the Andalusia state election: a state they had won in EVERY ELECTION since 1977.
    So what we should just interpret is that the headwinds for incumbents are about as strong as in the financial crisis.

    Who’s that fella that was shot 60 times by the police? Doesn’t matter. what
    I want to say, it’s too bad that didn’t happen in Polk Country Florida.
    Reporter would ask our Sheriff, “why did your officers shoot the suspect 60 times?”
    Our Sheriff Grady Judd would reply, “because that’s all the bullets they had.”
    😂😂😂

      Because it seems the republicans (excuse me, Tories) embrace men who are accused of sexual assault. That used to be the best way to be driven out by your own party but now they embrace them. It’s as predictable as it is despicable

      DNC should be running clips of rethug congresspersons rightly voicing disgust for j6 (for a few brief shining moments) 24/7 on fux news.

    I subscribe too see the "rot" in real time. Boring may have appeared a Bozo but our elected officials are a mirror of our society and culture at large to see gleeful commentary on a leader going down is not in anyway a solution to any of the dissolution of western society. Meritocracy or bust.
