For the ancient Greek one, it should be noted that homosexuality was super common in ancient Greece

I love this video. I like your voice, your look, and the facts. My favorite fact was about the lunchables guy who won't feed them to his own kids.

Another great video from my future husband. Two things: the protein in the eyes of birds is a fascinating example of a new field of "quantum biology" which examines the relationship between quantum mechanics and organics. It's only really being investigated now, but it's completely mind-blowing and holds profound implications for so many things, especially human consciousness. In the coming years it will completely changed our understanding of evolution and bio-mechanics. Google Jim Al-Khalili, a British physicist and science educator who has done a series of very accessible documentaries and TED talks on the subject. Another point: you are very right to say that we often think of the ancient world as "less civilised", when in fact by certain measures they were much more "civilised" than us. However... we must be careful not to force modern concepts onto ancient people. For example, your aside about "race" is generally true: the Greeks and Romans did not regard traits such as skin color important. What mattered to them, however, was what we might term "class" - only Greek or Roman citizens were deemed worthy of what we might call "human rights". Non-citizens - "barbarians" who prayed to the wrong gods, people captured as slaves in battle or native non-citizens who did not own land - were regarded as more-or-less sub-human. The Greeks and Romans had a very fatalistic worldview that meant, essentially, that if someone was born into the wrong circumstances then they simply had to put up with it. They didn't think those people were less intelligent or less capable of thought or feeling (as the modern slavers thought of Africans, for example), but they did NOT think they had any inherent rights - their "potential" as human being didn't matter (a notion that Christianity would later challenge). If a boy was kidnapped and forced to light lamps in his master's household for the rest of his life, then that was merely his fate. Similarly, Greek and Roman notions of "homosexuality" were very different. For starters, they didn't have a word for a man who might exclusively have sex with men. Homosexual acts were condoned to a degree but every Greek or Roman man was expected to take a wife and have children at some point. Once again, it was very bound to "class". A Roman man could have sex with all the slaves he wanted, male or female, but he could never have what we would call a "gay" relationship with another Roman man. It was not a partnership of equals (the Syrian emperor Elagabalus shocked Rome by "marrying" a charioteer - shocking not because of the gay sex but because of the suggestion that this thug might be treated as the equal of an Emperor). The Greeks condoned pederasty because a boy who was not yet of marrying age was regarded as a kind of "third gender". Simply put: it was not considered shameful for a boy to allow himself to be fucked in the ass, but it was very shameful for a grown man to submit to it. It was not, however, shameful for a grown man to fuck another grown man, so long as he was a non-citizen, such as a slave. But it was probably considered weird, because they thought boys were the height of beauty and big penis' were considered gross (which is why all those figures on vases etc have such small cocks - lol) Anyway... the point I want to make is we often try and frame the past using our own concepts - "racism", "sexism", "homosexuality" - but we should really be sure to try not to do that. Historical debates have a huge impact on our time and future and we must always strive to understand them as deeply as possible.

Yes, please do a quantum biology upload. Perhaps you can explain it to me! Like you, moral questions have always been a deep interest of mine. How does one construct notions of "right" and "wrong" independent of social context? Can we even hope to, in the way that Plato tried? Or is the post-modern approach of infinite contextualisation the only reasonable approach? A grown man having sex with a pre-pubescent boy is considered one of the greatest crimes in the modern West, yet it was considered completely normal by a number of societies at various times. Extreme examples like this blow my mind, because they illustrate how malleable our "moral" notions often are. For example: I can see people in the future being as horrified by meat eating as we are by slavery or pederasty. Like: I know there's no difference between a cow and my dog, yet I'd never eat my dog. Why? If I wasn't a hypocrite I wouldn't eat meat, but I am and I do. This is why I never get self-righteous, especially about people in previous historical epochs. I know that future people will probably judge me harshly!
