Most people don't catch on to the fact that this is actually a DUET! Yes, Sammy sharing vocal duties here with Mike Reno, of Loverboy. I'm really showing my age here but my first concert was Sammy Hagar to support this album. I was 12 years old and couldn't wait to hear this song live. Loved it then, love it now. Glad you caught on immediately to what a great tune it is. My love to all military members and families, you rock!

I was about to comment that same fact. lol I remember hearing this album for the first time and reading the liner notes on the back of the album and seeing Mike Reno’s name. His voice was such a perfect match with Sammy’s. I’m so glad you pointed that out. I was just about to say it too. lol I remember this tour as well although a bit older (16) it was such a great concert. Sammy “The Red Rocker” Hagar has always been a great entertainer over the years. I was also fortunate enough to see Loverboy during their prime. It was a great time for music.

Lisa - I was hoping someone would mention the Mike Reno think because anyone who truly listens closely to this song and knows lead singers from this era, will spot that it’s Reno right away. He had an amazing and powerful voice that was clean and true with incredible range. Hagar was great too - but Reno actually out sings him on this track in my opinion.

RIP and Bless all who gave the ultimate sacrifice in US military service. Veteran's Day (11/11) is for all who took the oath and wore the uniform; Armed Services Day is for all who currently serve - but today is especially for those who perished in the line of duty - "LORD of Hosts, be with us yet. Me, too. I thought "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter" were so hot. Then Paper Money came out and really blew me away. That's when I knew Sammy was the real deal. Several years later, after I got out the service, I worked for a security company briefly. The last job I did for them was checking backstage passes at a county fair outdoor concert with Sammy Hagar as the headliner. I was hired by the fair board. I had a partner (who wasn't from our company) on that post hired by the promoter, who thought the fair wouldn't hire sufficient security for the concert. He had hired members of the local chapter of the Hell's Angels. The first two bands were virtual unknowns from Los Angeles. Tried hard to remember their names and can only remember one - Juicy Lucy. They were pretty average, and it was clear who most of the crowd had bought tickets to see. Had one scary moment when the crowd started rocking the wooden retaining fence just below the stage. So glad we got folks to back off. *whew*

Just a few weeks back I was thinking about Mike Reno, (the lead singer for Loverboy, and the guy who sings the second and third verse) and I was like wait a minute, didn't he do a song with Sammy Hagar at one point? And then I remembered this and listened to it for the first time since it was new in 1983. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded after all these years. It's a largely forgotten song and perfectly appropriate for this day. Thanks for reacting to it.

I've been listening to Sammy since his days with Montrose (1973-1975) with hits like "Rock the Nation", "Space Station #5", "Bad Motor Scooter" & "Rock Candy". Sammy has so many great songs: "Cruisin' and Boozin'", "Turn Up the Music", "Red", "Rock 'N' Roll Weekend", "Turn Up the Music", "You Make Me Crazy", "Plain Jane", Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)", "Falling in Love", "This Planet's on Fire", "I'll Fall in Love Again", "There's Only One Way to Rock" , "Baby's on Fire", "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy", "Two Sides of Love", "I Can't Drive 55"...and this is just 1975 to 1982!

    “He’s working “.
We knew what his work was, I had friends at six years old who’s fathers never came home from work.
Very rare to hear understanding for military families from ones so young.

Apparently, this was from 1982, just as Sammy Hagar was peaking as a solo artist from the 'Three lock box' album... Hagar is also an accomplish lead guitarist - because of his stint in Van Halen, his talent on guitar was overshadowed by Eddie Van Halen's status.
His career is like the ultimate story of perseverance; u keep at it, no matter what the cost... and if u are really good at making music, the success will come eventually. Sammy Hagar had been singing since the late 60's before he recorded the first Montrose album in 1973 and experienced success for the first time... but he was fired in 1975 after just 2 albums (Montrose carried on w/ another singer before splitting up).
Hagar recalled that in 1976, he was broke and had a family to support, but he picked up his guitar, started writing songs and got a new band together... got a new record deal and hit the road. By the late 70's, he had built a following from constant touring - a minor hit single 'Red' gave him the nickname 'The Red Rocker'... And it was his 1982 solo album 'Standing Hampton' that gave him a commercial hit and a platinum record. Sammy Hagar was peaking in 1985, but was considering quitting music when he got the call from Eddie Van Halen to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen... he joined in 1986.
Even after a messy split from Van Halen in 1996, Sammy Hagar returned to writing & recording music and has also built a massive fortune from various non-music projects, a TV show... he's 74 years old and still performing w/ former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.

Mike Reno (Loverboy lead singer) did most of the vocals. Sammy was doing background vocals.

Sammy Hagar is a banger for sure!
Don't know if y'all will do any other military themed songs soon, but Five Finger Death Punch's "Wrong Side of Heaven" hits hard.
Also, Tim McGraw singing "If You're Reading This hits hard as well.

A song you might want to save for Veterans Day, since you didn't do it today: Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon", one of the most chilling songs about the Vietnam War out there. In live performances he gets actual vets to sing the chorus.

Another good Memorial Day song would have been Trace Adkins "Arlington" which is a song about a solider being buried an Arlington National Cemetery, Tim McGraw's "If You're Reading This" and Dixie Chicks "Traveling Solider" would have been 3 great songs for Memorial Day.

A great song, honestly didn’t know that from Sammy! Another great song about this theme, much more raw, is Gary Moore’s “Military Man”. Gary talks here from the soldier’s point of view and their families, naked and true, absolutely great! If you can try the live version from Stockholm 1987

This song was on his 1982 album Three Lock Box. I always assumed it was about Viet Nam veterans. The early 80’s Americans were beginning to recognize the contributions and plight of Vietnam veterans in movies & music. Other great songs from the era: Still In Saigon, Charlie Daniels Band; Bruce Springsteen, Born in the USA; Stevie Wonder, Front Line, and Billy Joel, Goodnight Saigon. All of these songs were released within a two year period.

I don’t know if you have done any Toby Keith songs yet but American Soldier is a great song honoring our service members.
My husband served 21 years in the Army and we have been together for all of it.
We have been exceptionally fortunate to not have lost any personal friends in combat. But there have definitely been fellow soldiers lost from the forts we were stationed at. Every military family member lives in fear of that knock on the door from the notification team.

Other songs by Sammy... the Red Rocker! "Mas Tequila" "Can't Get Loose" "I'll Fall In Love Again" Very Early in his career he was in a band called Montrose... A song by them you could listen to is "Rock Candy". Sammy also took over as the front man in Van Halen after David Lee Roth left the group in 1985. One of the songs from that era "Love Walks In" or "Why Can't This Be Love". Then Sammy also was in a super group called Chickenfoot... he was the lead singer, Joe Satriani was the guitarist... Michael Anthony the bassist from Van Halen... and Chad Smith... the drummer from Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Edit: I just remembered another Montrose song... "Bad Motor Scooter" Sammy wrote the song when he was in the group so you will find versions while he was in Montrose and versions when he was a solo artist.
