Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. So by definition any competition involves a sport
When I was a kid, I got really into cup stacking(around 2006-2010). I went to tournaments and even made it to the top 5 once against some of the top cup stackers in a couple states. I remember doing tons of talent shows and people watching in awe as I moved the cups at what seemed to them as insane speed, but to me was way too slow to compete in anything. I unfortunately had to stop because it stopped becoming fun, because I felt I was pushing myself too hard. I watched this video just to see how far cup stacking has gone, and it has definitely changed quite a lot in the past 10 years. When I started there was only one style of cup, the timers only went to hundredths of didgets(not thousandths), and the record for the cycle was somewhere around 6 or so, and TH-cam was not nearly used as much, mainly because it was rather new. I’m only 18 and I feel ancient in this sport. It’s really addictive once you get started in it, so if your young and got time to kill give it a shot!

Tampa Bay Speedsolving is not the same as speedstacking. Speedsolving requires a lot more skills, to be a world class speedstacker you just have to practice one motion a lot of times until you can do it fast. With cubing, world class cubers memorize hundreds of algs, plan out their solve before starting, and while solving need to look ahead to optimize their move count. Both are pretty useless in the real world but how are those the same thing.
I used to do this but I never stuck to it for long. A high school student at our school caught my attention so I wanted to learn. Good thing that dude was kind and actually approached me to learn it. I never remembered what my fastest time was but I expect it was slow
As a fellow stacker, when you go fast, it can take hours to get a clean time. You can’t get a clean and fast time every single time. It’s just not possible
This is the same as speedrunning videogames, but this one I don't understand. Doing the same thing with the exact same formations doesn't get really repetitive and boring? I can understand speedrunning and rubik's cube competitions since those have more things going on, with random elements, but can someone explain how this doesn't get dull overtime?
Aleksander for my experience playing it. feels nice to have them stack *smoothly*. but I can see why you say it can be boring because of there not much of a pattern or possible other change in the game.
I have kept at it because of the community of stackers. I'm sure I would have quit stacking after a while if no one else did it. There is so much more going on than you actually see; it just comes with experience
Speedrunning has rules. And it also has laws, and the trick is finding ways to circumvent those videogame laws ("I shouldn't be able to go through walls, but exploiting something I can run past it"). However the rules and laws change from game to game and even between playthroughts. Having the same few (few, as in fewer than other sports) rules all the time doesn't make it boring?
I remember working at that address mentioned (which hasn’t changed in quite some time) when I was younger because my mom was one of their first employees. My brother and I would practice in our off time and they would even pay us to travel around the country to teach and demonstrate at schools and convention centers. Even at that time about 15 years ago it was still a debate whether or not it was a sport. Either way we did it because it was fun and we were getting payed. As for the long term aspects of starting at a young age, my brother and I became ambidextrous rather quickly and were soon playing hockey, baseball, and lacrosse both left and right handed. Thanks for the video, brought back some good memories.
oh god speed stacking brings back so many elementary memories. I still remember the first competition I had and it was at the place I recently graduated from (it was a school district competition btw).
Got into Stacking 2 years ago, fastest record for Cycle was around 9 or 8 seconds..? But this has inspired me to start it again, after I find it in my Garage
This is absolutely a sport. The competition is unbelievably fierce. I used to hold world records for sport stacking. These kids, including my former-self, practice 2-3+ hours everyday, all year.
During the credits, you sound disappointed with your time at the end of 5.238 seconds. But you're looking at it in entirely the wrong way--you were just 3.453 seconds short of setting a NEW world record!!!! That's what I'd be bragging about. *nodding* =) How many people can say that they were short a mere 3.453 seconds from a new world record?
I remember these things when I was younger. Like 10 or maybe even younger. Now I'm 17, and my friend reminded me of cupstacks. I decided to look up cupstacking videos, and I'm surprised that this video was uploaded this year.
I never heard of that sport and it's the first time a learn something really new in a long time. Only time I saw stacking cup it was on some random video where the girl was using them to make music. Thank you for the vidéo.

However the rules and laws change from game to game and even between playthroughts. Having the same few (few, as in fewer than other sports) rules all the time doesn't make it boring?
I did this as a kid and it just randomly popped into my mind.
It was really fun actually.
I love the sound at the end (8:25) :) Well done!
This sport brings so much progress to humanity. I'm proud!
No sports bring any progress to humanity
Directly
Its also used for Rubik's cube competitions
Yeah
this is literally the only sport i understand
I bet you understand volleyball pretty well ;)
What about soccer all u do is kick a ball

Shoelace tying would be a more useful sport
If only kids would transfer these skills into stacking the dishwasher.
Mellow Yellow i know it's you mom
Sport stacking in PE? Wtf I want that
Katherine Ang I did it
I do sport stacking I want to thank you for making this it really inspires me
As a speedcuber it's quite interesting seeing this sport that shares so many similarities with mine and is yet so different.
4:00 That’s cheating in speedcubing tho I wished it wasnt
"Speed stacking" like👍👍👍
"Speed cuber" comment👏👏👏
ace pogi gwapo I like both but I cannot do cubing
Cuber
Tech Dock same my focus is terrible for cubing
Sport stacking, but with glass.
Got into Stacking 2 years ago, fastest record for Cycle was around 9 or 8 seconds..? But this has inspired me to start it again, after I find it in my Garage
I did this in PE in elementary school. It was so fun.
This is absolutely a sport. The competition is unbelievably fierce. I used to hold world records for sport stacking. These kids, including my former-self, practice 2-3+ hours everyday, all year.
Any cubers here?
me
I know I'm late but yeah I'm a cuber
Me
Cubing is a lot harder, not to downgrade speed stacking but it's more of practice of dexterity and doing the same thing over and over again
Gabriel Lupisan I think I’d suck at speed stacking
During the credits, you sound disappointed with your time at the end of 5.238 seconds. But you're looking at it in entirely the wrong way--you were just 3.453 seconds short of setting a NEW world record!!!! That's what I'd be bragging about. *nodding* =) How many people can say that they were short a mere 3.453 seconds from a new world record?
2x2 rubiks cube WR is 0.49 and my best is 0.79
Omg I am 0.3 sec near the wr! :v
@@alejrandom6592 thats sarcasm right?
@@TrueBluw No its true the record is actually 0.49 seconds
@@Hello-jh1rq I was referring to the fact that he thought he was going to beat the world record

I remember these things when I was younger. Like 10 or maybe even younger. Now I'm 17, and my friend reminded me of cupstacks. I decided to look up cupstacking videos, and I'm surprised that this video was uploaded this year.
The dexterity is astounding. Actions are smooth, which equals fast if you do it right.
"He takes practice in a churches attracting the best stackers" Yeah "practice"
Where's speedcubing?!
8:13 that awkward moment
This is an excellent video about something that I knew nothing about. Thank you for your work on this.
“Hey kids why don’t you come stack with me in my churches basement”
Weebs be like: "I want an anime about sports stacking"
Please please please
Why is this taught in PE? It's not at all physical, and if they're teaching it because it's (apparently) a sport, why not teach chess in PE as well?
I think it is physical though. You move your hand a lot of times very fast so you do use a lot of energy for it.
Phil Coutinho or esport xd
They should teach chess In PE it’s some of the best mental exercise you can get
They teach chess in PE what are you talking about
@@lone2234 where do they teach chess in PE? That's an interesting school.
This video makes me second guess my life's purpose
Ouch 😂
Can't wait for a Vox video on speedcubing.
Me too
Awesome video thanks for all the clean info
Why would this even become a thing? Is it a bit like that bottle flipping craze but taken to an extreme?
Speed stacking actually existed before bottle flipping was a thing
How am i supposed to drink punch in these?
3:10 highly advanced tactics??? cubing has so many more highly advanced tactics like ZBLL F2L cross. big cubes. square 1. 3 Style in blind solving
True
They are entirely different things, just because they use the same timer doesnt make them the same
I find the last 2 sounds at the end of the stack incredibly pleasant for some reason
Their f2l is a little slow but OLL to PLL transition look-ahead is on point
Do a League of Legends Esports Story!
Vaalis95 E Sports is more of a sport than this!
you mean like online gambling and stuff like that?
+Miitchel Whitmer Does it make you sweat by kinetic energy?, no.
(I support eSports)
so do these guys become professional dishwashers when they get old?
How does cupstacking have anything to do with dishwashing.
They'd probably just break the glasses
probably true
And you think people who play football or volleyball in highschool go on to have that as a career?
HAHA! thanks for the good laugh!
Yep
We did this in PE at school 😂
You guys should do more sports like jiu jitsu fencing, speed solving Rubik's cubes, or any other strange yet cool sports
That’s amazing I had only heard of speed cubing and had no idea there was a whole world of speed stacking out there. I’m excited to give it ago
The fact that so many little kids can do this at an elite level is proof that it is a waste of time and not a sport
Kids play football…. Kids play basketball…. Kids play tennis…. All at elite levels, and are they still a sport???? ✨yes✨
*B-but Vox. What about Muslim cup stackers?*
Döla Freundlich wat
Döla Freundlich the sport is growing in Arab countries, if that helps answer you :)
Döla Freundlich they don't have TH-cam channels though, most of them use instagram
Im a muslim cup stacker?
Buy the way, define "Cup stacker" do you define by time?, by recognition?
There are Muslim "Sport Stackers" in the middle east. I'm good friends with them. Some are good and some are bad.
Any speedcubers here?

It takes me about 45 mins to load the dishwasher followed by another hour to unload
I never heard of that sport and it's the first time a learn something really new in a long time. Only time I saw stacking cup it was on some random video where the girl was using them to make music.
Thank you for the vidéo.
