I'm nearing the end of my life and I just want to say your channel has brought me a lot of joy. Keep up the good work!
I'm kind of jealous at Matt his ability to work, explain, teach and make jokes all together.
Matt, you are so calm, it's a joy to watch and listen to.
ahh, me too. I have to stop, talk, then start back up. I have one friend who will say very loudly: "okay, stop talking, and let the master do his work, you can talk to him when he is finished! Hold all questions till the end!"
Really liked the video. Like the lack of drama on Matt's programs. Every one gets along, no one trying to outdo the other.
There's one guy there, who over does it a bit on camera. The guy who set up the tent for them. But you're right no drama.
Matt, at your suggestion, I went outside and took apart my engine - 2012 Ford 3.5 Ecoboost - and you were right, the bearings ARE used! Problem: I have no idea how to put it back together. Could you maybe stop by & give me a hand? 🤔
Too late for my dad to check his on his 87 Wagoneer with a AMC 401 because we killed that motor by accident
Meh it's better that engine stays apart
I have the same engine with 170k and not a single issue (so far)
Good try at kidnapping Matt 😂
😂
I just love Katlyn's happy smile every day. She will become a master mechanic working with Matt. Nothing seems to get this girl down! She is a good addition to your crew. Thanks for letting her drive the wrecker on the Rubicon trail. That was soooo cool!
She is one hell of a driver that's for sure.
A couple hundred more videos and she'll have her own truck to go ranchin'
except she works for matt so she’ll never be anywhere near a master mechanic 😭she’ll be a dollar store mechanic
Can’t wait for her baby to arrive 🥰
@@benmunoz9328 exactly, she’s no Lizzy . Just a blonde that walks around and smiles
Such a wonderful crew! You all are a joy to watch and when Katelyn smiles the whole world gets brighter! God bless you all!
Katlyn is always smiling andnin a good mood. 😂 Its good to have coworkers like her around to keep everyone in a good mood
Yes 💯% agree 👍
So cool to see a father and Son working together, They are laughing and having a great time. This is in fact one of the reasons why I Enjoy this channel. Obviously the tows are great but The Family aspect is great.
Sorry Matt the kid wins the marvel confusion
Btw love it became more of a family show!
@@dinobm13 Agreed
I was thinking to myself as Rhett poured. "He uses a really big spoon when he eats cereal" 😂
I don't think I own a spoon that big...
Omg right?
LoL.I was thinking that too.Not everybody nibbles their breakfast.Especially someone trying to get ready for school, or work. Not many have time to read a paper and sip coffee as their cereal turns to mush.Bigger bites gets it while crunchy. That oil just helped the cylinders, and keeps the exhaust from rusting from the inside ;)
If only there was a common unit of measure. Like 1/4 cup or two cap fulls. When I was 8 I asked a church lady her recipe for Lefsa. Everything was “a pinch, handful, just a “ amounts. “Enough potatoes to fill *something I never heard of*”. It was worse than useless. But funny.
i thought he was never going to stop pouring 😂
11:00 this is for anyone out there, During assembly as long as the rings are clocked in different directions or opposite of eachother or however they're specified if you have instructions but if not have them clocked as mentioned...or however you please
Regardless if an engine is working as it should the rings will spin and be happy😁😁
I feel like family watching matts videos,Puts a smile on my face for sure 😁 and im around their age since im 20,Wish i had a dad that could be with me and knew more than me to be teached but i cant complain ! Iv'e learned alot on my own but still got lots more to learn !
I was taught it's good practice to just make sure they're not lined up - but also that it really wasn't important, as the rings will twist around in their grooves as the engine runs, so they won't stay where you put them. Only 2-strokes hold their rings from rotating, so the gap doesn't wipe over a port and snap the end of the ring off - and in their case, the piston itself has a little nub in each groove that holds the ring in place.
@@aussiebloke609 Yeah you're aren't wrong it kinda doesn't really matter but id rather be on the safe side !
Also i never knew about that on the 2 strokes ! Kinda makes sense cause well.....its a 2 stroke and they don't have cams since they rely on the ports(unless its a detroit or something like that) ,Thats good to know man! The more ya know 😁😁
It's been about 40 years since I have put an engine together, so this was very satisfying to watch. I always thought it was called a bell housing because of the shape. Now I know it's because of the sound. Thankyou Matt for setting the record straight.
It's the shape. Maybe he was just being funny
it's probably the shape because the sound depends on the material used. Not all metals will produce a bell sound.
@@mediocreman2 Thanks for pointing out what I thought was the obvious. 🤔
Last May we traveled from Florida to Washington State and stopped in hurricane. From watching your show we contacted the Humvee tours. About an hour in we broke the front suspension. My first thought was this is fantastic Matt's going to come out and rescue us. Unfortunately you came out the next day and made the repair on the trail and filmed it. We had a wonderful experience in hurricane and with the people that we met.
Hurricane must be the only town on the planet where people are happy to break down.
That would be disappointing. So close.
I'm 69 years old and never knew how an engine went together (what went where and why) until now. Thanks for the "tutorial." In 1974 I had to replace the bell housing on a 1967 Dodge one ton Maxivan with a 225 slant six (single tiny carburetor). Never did it before, but after I got it together it rattled like crazy when driven. I was told by a mechanic that the pilot bearing was bad. That it would cost $350 to replace this 25 cent part. I had a friend join me and we replaced that bearing ourselves in a third of the time I did it before. Saved the $350 I didn't have (only made $221 every two weeks in the Navy back then),
Check out Vice Grip Garage - Derick just did a 3 hour rebuild of a I-6 Ford 300. Very interesting information on rocker geometry and setting the valve lash.
@@joeythedime1838 Interesting. I rebuilt one of those about 15 years ago and it was very easy to work on.
Thank you for your service.
Wow sorry to hear that, sounds like you wasted 69 years. 😮
Watching Kaitlyn re-evaluate her life's choices as Rhett asks about the brakes, Matt comments on the brakes and it rolls out into the intersection was hilarious.
You have the sweetest children. You might not have the sweetest engine, but you did a first class job of being a father.
They do seem like very nice kids. That’s what being an involved, attentive father and mother usually gets you.
Way way back in the day, I had a paper route and a used 1962 (I think) black hard-top 3-speed stick-shift Corvair Monza Spyder. Most fun car ever. But one night it snowed pretty heavily. (Loved my gas heater.) I was delivering papers that morning; turned a corner at a hilltop intersection and the car spun round and round; finally abutting the right street curb with the right rear wheel. Stuck. When sun came up, I could see the rear wheel bent outward at top, inward at bottom ... the engine ran fine but was also slightly tilted. Car got towed to a garage and they told my parents it was totaled .. and I said "Goodbye." 50 years of sadness later, watching your videos, I now realize that car could have EASILY been fixed. Darn, what a life-changing moment that might have been, had I known anything. 🙁
Delivering newspapers 🗞️ back in the day. That brought me back to those days.
My brother-in-law had a paper route and I helped. We used a VW Kharman Ghia he would drive and I sat on the front driver’s side fender, he would pass the rolled papers to me and I’d toss them. The Sunday papers were a tough toss 😂. Those were the days 😊
@@LAP1050 Indeed, they were! And today? My city's newspaper is now switching to paper delivery only 3 times per week using the USPS next month. It's going soon all Internet. Pretty hard to line the kitty litter box digitally.
@@LAP1050 I'm 71 and back in my day I had to use a bicycle. The only time a car was used was the Sunday paper before Memorial Day. I lived in Indianapolis and, because of the race, that paper was so big that the baskets on my bike would only hold two on each side. My father took pity on me and drove the route, whilst I ran them to the door.
@@stevethompson8171 yep! I'm 67 and had a paper route for four years until I turned 16 and could get a paycheck job. Hammond, IN. I used a bicycle, too! I had two metal wire paniers on the rear and a huge paper bag hung from hooks on the front. 130 papers! And we had to collect the money ourselves using books with manual punch cards. I don't think kids today know what it was like.
5:44 “It is controversial, not everybody does it, I do it” - Watching the looks you’re getting while putting that bearing and crank assembly together is pure gold ❤❤❤
Matt: "I wish I had a clean room to do this in" proceeds to put used bearings, 40 yr old assembly lube and used cam 😆😆😆 nothing wrong with it, just the irony.
OMG I laughed till it hurt when you yanked the muffles off and said welp can't hear it knocking anymore 😆😆
You can tell someone is new to TH-cam. They look at the front camera to check the framing of the video. It looks like Kat is looking at the camera but she is checking the frame of the shot. Then after a year they just know and stop.
"You ain't grinding gears, you ain't driving!"
Quote of the week.
We used to tease our bus driver that she had a "make your own gear" transmission!
As much as I've enjoyed Matt's past crews like Trevor and Rudy and Lizzy, it really feels like's this is the best crew yet, their charming personality quirks and how well everyone works together. Please don't anyone ever leave!
I'm sorry but I always felt like Lizzie was a little standoffish, like not very approachable,Caitlin I see her as different, I think she's a better helpful resource
Hehehe Matt you are a man of my Heart, I am 73, when I was a younger, I had to work on all my own stuff. I used what I had, hehehe mostly used parts and they work. Fake it to you make it was my motto. LOVE YOU MAN. You are keeping History alive. That’s how people did it back in the day.
So happy that I know now why it’s called a bell housing😊, what is a day without a dose of Matts Off-road recovery😊. Keep the sun shining and doing what you’re doing. Love it, thanks a lot.
It's called a bell housing because of its shape, but maybe he was just being funny.
@@mediocreman2 Thank you, I actually know, but I love it when Matt is being funny in a kind way.
I thought Casey Ladelle was visiting when Jake came on with his red shirt and sunglasses 😂
This current crew is amazing. Everyone seems to have a great time. I just watched the rubicon trip from 3 years ago, and Rhett has had a heck of a glow up. I almost didn't recognize him in that other video. His voice gave him away. He's always a white cloud in the group. I swear I've never seen/ heard him complain or be grumpy. He's so like his dad. If it didn't kill you, you're fine. Lol, everything will work out.
He'll sure turn out to be a fine gentleman.
Rhett had braces back then too
If you want to stress about piston rings, look up radial aircraft engine ring install. The pistons in the bottom have a different ring install than the top.
I had to rewind to hear Matt say "put a little bit of 2 stroke, a little bit of marvel in there so we dont forget" 14:16
I'm a 63 yr old horse, rode hard and picked up wet! I don't know why exactly, but I feel love for you guys! All y'all!!! God Bless you guys!!!

Watching Matt work on Corvair engines is like watching a street artist do a painting, it's made out of cardboard and spray cans but it's also a masterpiece and I appreciate the amount of time and expertise it took get to that point.
Piston rings turn during operation. Usually you only offset them 120° of each other to avoid excessive blowby during the first start. After a few minutes the rings are not where they started and it also doesnt matter.
The mood in those videos and that shop is just FRESH. Love every upload!
I am so glad Matt and Crew uses a torque wrench properly! Click it once to get the proper torque. So many people, including u-tubers, click TWICE! ...Irks me to see that!
Thank You, Matt!
Oh my word, I do believe Matt nearly gave Katlyn a laugh attack!! She was laughing so hard at Matt grindin dem gears!! Great exit out of the shop like a super hero crew to test out the Blue Spud Hauler! Rett's puns were on point this episode. He is so relaxed around his dad's shenanigans, wasn't phased in the least with either test drive!
So Wise , Thank You . Thank You for the Ed Sighting , Mat with a Torque Wrench , GOOD JOB. Fine Test drive . Thank You
Ok lots going on here at Matt's Off road recovery with the Onx build buggy and the Chevy 6x6x6 off road rollback. Things are moving forward and Matt's experience with the Corvair's is astounding to say the least! KaitLynn, Kolby, Rhett, and Jake are learning a bunch from Matt that will help them in the future. Even Ed was there!
If crude oil comes from decomposed dinosaurs, and plastic comes from crude oil, then we can deduce that toy dinosaurs are REAL dinosaurs !!! LOL
Howdy Matt! Robby Layton says “if it’s metal we can fix it”. I think of that every time I see the passenger door on the Spud Truck. He’s gonna paint it anyway so maybe he can in fact fix the existing door???
I sure hope someone can fix the door! I'm sure he's talking to people that might be able to help.
I was curious about what Matt said about hand position on the steering wheel, and he is right that "10 and 2" is no longer recommended (due to risk of injury in vehicles equipped with airbags), but the recommendation now is actually "9 and 3". According to the Utah Driver's Handbook, I should say. 🙂
So can I tell my wife ( and many others that ) left hand at 7with just two fingers is also not recommended
I remember it being 9 and 3 back in my day here in PA, but that was few decades ago, so I could be foggy on that detail.
@@528CircleWe were taught 10 and 2 in my driver's education class in high school in 1976. When airbags were first used they found that upon deployment there were some serious hand injuries so they now recommend 9 and 3 as the safest.
Katelynn smiling in the face of potential disaster, lol
My first apprenticeship I did when I left school years back was Machanics. I then moved to Steel, I have been in fabricating stuff from Steel for the last 25 years. But I love this guy expertise in making something completely different from what they were intended to be. Love this channel. Dont mis any uploads.. I wonder how many people watch Matt's of road from. South Africa
I'm here, but we'll never know
22:04 Matt knows it's nice because he does it twice
"oh I dunno, 3 bites of cereal worth." That is quite the unit of measurement.
My cereal bites are Andre the Giant sized.
Do we mention the metric system in the comments 😍
Rhet must take some massive bites of cereal 😂😂😂
Americans will use anything except the metric system
Got me freakin' googlin' if Corvair's came with 2 strokes...
The bell housing joke was great 😂
That's why you are supposed to pre-soak new lifters in oil and manually compress a few times to get new oil inside them. Anxious to see this cool buggy floating across the sand !
My Father lost it when he heard you say
“Cheap and lazy racing” 😂
Thats the exact name he gave our garage from working on all of our trucks,3 wheelers, dirt bikes, boats and tractors back in when I was growing up
MORR. Definitely one of my favorite channels on TH-cam. Shout out to the whole team.
Let's see as much as possible on the pre runner, thanks again for the entertainment.
I haven't checked in on this channel for a few weeks and now I'm seeing Matt voluntarily and happily using a torque wrench. This channel is nearing its end, I'm calling it today!
Matt - You should have seen how a 30 year old tub of Teflon Fortified Grease looked when I opened it up. It had separated and had a layer of hard plastic like dried old paint floating on top of the oil that use to be mixed in suspension with. Old grease cartridges will do similar however you likely won't see any evidence of it until well after you've loaded them in your grease gun and they start dripping oil after you already started using them.
Old oil does similar however the pressure additive usually sink to the bottom and can get very abrasive (Don't ask me how I know). It probably would be a good idea, if you haven't already done so, to pull any other NOS parts that might contain old oil and clean them our or replace them.
Best!
When Matt says "this changes everthing", I assume he's referring to using the torque wrench on his beaded rims! 😂
13:34 *What!* "we don't have one"?? ..Balancers begin showing up in the mail 👍😎✊
That looks like a true Fred Flintstone car with the three of you guys driving it around the parking lot
I've recently gone down that rabbit hole containing your content, and just wanted to say I throughly enjoy it all. It's so satisfying to watch those

I like how Katlyn went from being very shy when she first started to wanting to take the camera and recording and also becoming a major part of the team .
I have a huge crush on her 😅
I feel the same way about Hillbilly on Robby's channel.
What a fun place to work/play! Matt and the gang has fun and works well together with no drama and I LOVE watching these videos due in large part to the fun aspect.
“If you ain’t grinding gears, you ain’t driving!” 😆 👏 yes!!!! Hahahaha This is why I love this channel. It’s just… whatever. Do whatever and go with the flow!!! Love it! Haha

I love the look of black rims and tires with chrome bead lock ring 4:15 :)
It’s curious to see some similar things air cooled Porsche engines. Looks good MOOR Team!
I believe your ring orientation is fairly common. I also believe that the rings will rotate within the cylinder while the engine runs, hence why the ring gaps become random…
Just as long as the gaps are not all lined up above/below next ring.
Katlyn is an absolute doll!!! Her smile and attitude is contagious. What a crew and what a great teacher!!! Thanks Matt.
"If you ain't grabbing gears you ain't driving!"
I wonder where Rhett got that from... 😂😁🤘
I love Matt's approach to building an engine. It's not formula 1 and he's just gonna do what he knows works. At the end of the day, Matt has to do the maintenance down the road anyway so who is it hurting.
Fond memories of keeping my Monza going for over 300K miles back in the 70s. The first vehicle I ever did much wrenching on and also the first vehicle I ever did a complete engine rebuild on. Thank goodness for Clark's Corvair Parts.
Good morning everybody! Thumbs UP to MORR!
Matt needs to write a book on his mechanical units of measurement so that they can be universally adopted. LOL
My dad rebuilt our off road buggy engine in our living room when I was younger. You just brought back awesome memories.
Keep having fun Matt.
Pulling out of the shop, it looks really cool. Maybe y'all can get Robby to paint it . He could be your team's first sponsor.
Awesome. Some guys use *anaerobic sealants which seal in the absence of air, so it stays wet during assembly but after torquing it cures. @GearBoxVideo is a wizard with manual transmissions and what sealants to use where. Your welcome
Every time I see someone under a vehicle without safety glasses on my eyes starting itching.
Love the build!
I’m so proud of Matt for picking up and using a torque wrench and I want to thank Tom Tom for teaching him how to use it 😆
Yup, when you take your engine apart you'll find used bearings in there. I'll add that to Freibergers quote of what people did in '69, and that was drive their '69 Camaros in the winter.

Rule number one when reassembling your vehicle. Always tighten the bolts as you put them in. Or else you will always forget a couple.
I use a paint pen to keep track of what has been tightened
Editors: I was bummed when you didn’t do the Batman spinny screen thing when Matt said, “to the spud truck”. That could become a thing every time they get a call for the spud truck.
19:24 watch Rhett looking like he was getting ready to tell his side of the story😂😂😂😂😂
EXCELLENT... loved the banjo playing too
Dual shocks are great if valved correctly... chevy put quad shocks on the front of alot of late 80s trucks stock. When it came time to replace or upgrade them.... no one sold shocks with the correct valving. The stock shocks were valved so each shock did half the work, so together they acted like a large single able to absorb bumps longer b4 fading. Most shops would install shocks with full valving (designed to work alone) & installing 2 per side made the truck ride extreamly rough. The higher end Bilstine shocks can be rebuilt & the valved according to your weight, spring rate ect. Alot of us have custom valving done on our shocks for our Razors, bikes & snowmobiles, makes a huge difference! One of the best in the buisness is Jack Strothers in Boise ID... Carl's Cycle Sales. It's not cheap but the difference is totally Amazing when an expert who has races for years sets them up. I can rebuild & install seals ect but the magic is in all the years of racing & tuning Jack has acquired. Bar non one of the best improvements over stock is proper shock setup.
Love the way Matt tells you how he does it and doesn't tell you this is how its done. Always leaves it open for your own way of doing things
love the sound of these old air-cooled engines. Many of the same sounds come from VW & Porsche. Once you own one, you miss it on everything else you drive.
That's going to be awesome !!! I LOVE YOU ALL @ M.O.R.R. !!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
