- In this landscape photography video I set out early to shoot around Y Garn on the Nantlle Ridge, Snowdonia. It starts out quite promising, with some lovely light and misty conditions, but instead of breaking up and letting some light through later on, my photographs have to contend with lowering mist.

One of the things I like most about your vlogs is you show its not all roses. And we're all at the hands of the weather gods. The very last image, outstanding. I never watch vlogs on my phone, always a 55" TV. So imagine how great that last image looked. Brilliant ❤️

Cheers Keith, yes it suits me that most visitors either head for Snowden or Ogwen. Because they don't know any better, and luckily none of them watch my stuff either! But there are plenty of fabulous locations to be enjoyed in relative solitude right across the region right through the year! 😊👍

Another cracking vlog with some lovely atmospheric images
There's certainly more Y Garns than you can shake a stick at. There's the 2 you mentioned plus there's one in the Rhinnogydd and then there's Y Garn and Llyn Y Garn near Trawsfynydd.

The thing is, that's half the problem round here. Very often there's too much low cloud! Mind you, there is still plenty to see at lower levels 😊👍

Really struggling to find time lately! Ever since they've let us off the leash I've hardly got a couple of hours to myself, so even weekends have become a problem. Was very pleased that I managed to get some decent conditions for this one, because having squeezed a couple of hours out of my schedule it could've been a complete waste of time!! 😊👍

Pity about the clouds, but you did come back with some cracking images. The look back to the Dinorwig levels was interesting, if not my favourite. I must say you certainly seemed to be enjoying the day.
I'll be honest mate, if it hadn't been for the forecast I wouldn't have bothered getting up of the 500 m, although to be fair I did get lucky and one or two images were worth the trip 😊👍

Previously you used to include some details on the actual settings used when displaying the images (f stop and focal length, ISO perhaps).
On a personal basis I found that to be very helpful, especially the focal length. Be good to have this back.
Helo Jon, diolch yn fawr iawn. You're quite right I did used to put some details on. I stopped doing it quite some time ago and to be honest nobody else has noticed! Or at least they haven't mentioned it. There were two reasons, firstly it did take quite a bit of time setting up the images for the video and I've become much busier in recent months with business, both photo and video related, and other ventures. So it just saves me a little editing time. Secondly, and something which formed a large part of the decision to save a bit of time was that it really doesn't provide much of an indication to somebody looking to learn from them. You see, when you are out with your camera looking to capture an image the settings which would be most appropriate for that circumstance, really can only be gauged there and then under those conditions and based on whatever artistic outcome you're looking for. And so including my particular settings isn't really of huge value in the scheme of things. If it were, then I wouldn't have compromised on saving a bit of time. I would've continued to display them. One thing you can do when you're looking to improve your own technique, is to take a series of comparison shots (assuming you have time and the camera is on a tripod). The focal length used is always specific to the composition, except of course where you're looking to manipulate depth of field but that isn't particularly common in landscapes. But exposure settings, and to some extent aperture controlled depth of field can all be experimented with quite successfully. All you need to do is to take a series of exposures of exactly the same image using a range of settings all of which give you a histogram that provides a reasonable set of pixels but varies shutter speed and aperture. In that way you will start to arrive at a general set of settings, which work for you, based on your artistic interpretation, and of course the characteristics of your camera. When I migrated from Nikon to Olympus this is exactly what I did in order to get a handle on what would work best for me. It very quickly become second nature and you can then concentrate on the compositions rather than the technicalities. And I guess it's for that reason that I felt that it wouldn't hamper people looking to learn from me by removing these details. I really hope that kind of gives you some thinking behind it and hopefully you're not too disappointed that I'm going to probably not reinstate them any time soon. Cheers mate. The thing is, I'm getting to the point where I'm going to just have to go out and enjoy a walk or two without stopping to film and take pictures on a tripod. When I go out with other people guiding or with mates I never film and always really enjoy it as a break from vlogging. But with this year being so upside down, and all of my guiding and tuition clients pushing back until later in the year I've got a couple of months with every trip out by myself. 😊👍

Don't worry about crowds, don't feel you can't come and enjoy these fabulous landscapes. There are countless opportunities for great scenery in relative solitude that don't involve crowds and parking problems! 😊👍

Fantastic video David. You are so lucky to have great vistas to capture. I would love to know how you do the focus stacking that you mentioned in the video. Do you use the in camera focus stacking mode or use Lightroom? Would it be possible for you to make a short video on the ins and outs on how to focus stack please?
Hi Warren, I do my focus stacking in photo shop usually manually. If you take a look at Mark Denney's TH-cam channel you'll see he recently did one about manual focus stacking (th-cam.com/video/oMQzjzk-tFo/w-d-xo.html) and to be honest my process is almost identical so hopefully that will help you out a little 😊👍

The PD clip sits fine on the shoulder strap as it has a webbing overlay so you're not forced to clamp it around the entire strap. very handy and a very specific thing I checked beforehand 😊👍

What filter(s) did you utilize on this excursion?
Hello David, many thanks for watching. The filters which are used for most of the images were a combination of a 0.9 soft graduated ND filter and a circular polariser. Some images had both, some had one or the other, and some had none. Of course, in the modern age of digital photography they are not essential (although the CPL can't be duplicated digitally) but I find they are helpful, and for certain images very much so in combination. 😊👍
You really need to start working some of your images into monochrome. The ridgeline image is a perfect candidate.
Ah, no just not my thing really unless there really is no colour in the scene to start with 😊👍
