5:09 - speed limit change is already an adjustable feature. It can go with the flow of traffic or set to certain mph over the speed limit of your choice
I agree with your observations. I've also been trying FSD for the past month and here is what I don't like about it: 1. Constant nagging to touch the wheel even if my eyes are on the road. If I have to hold the wheel, I might as well drive myself. 2. Sudden braking when approaching slowing traffic on highway. It actually burned some rubber a few times for no good reason! 3. Too slow to make decisions, especially at intersections. My human brain is much faster. 4. I can tell other drivers get very annoyed because FSD is really slow and I constantly get tailgated. So I often find myself switching it off so I don't anger other drivers. When will I buy FSD? When it's not supervised and I can be on my phone, read a book, or drink a milkshake without being nagged. When it makes quicker decisions and doesn't over-react.
I agree. I'm grateful Tesla allowed a month of free FSD because it made me realize that I really do enjoy driving. Continuous Autopilot (which I got with S3XY buttons) for long trips is all I need.
Having the demo was nice to realize the cost was not worth it yet, but it was super magical to see it in action the first time, really shows how much capability of the car is locked behind a paywall. I think somewhere along the lines of 3k makes more sense.
I agree. 8k for FSD is just too much. I think Tesla should release some of the functions you get with FSD like autopark and sell them a la carte. It would be nice to be able to pick and choose which parts of FSD you want for a much smaller fee.
I have a 2023 Model Y. I tried the free FSD trial in April and decided it wasn’t worth $99 per month. On each drive I took, it made one or two dangerous decisions. I might have paid $20/month for the novelty; but no way is it ready for prime time; and it’s certainly not worth $99/month. Pros: auto park, maintaining appropriate speed and lane centering on curvy roads, driving on city roads with stop lights, auto lane changes on highways Cons: navigating through parking lots, inching out too slowly at stop signs, improperly dealing with merging traffic on highways, and mishandling complex intersections Here are three examples of FSD making dangerous decisions: 1. Four way stop: I was going straight at a 4-way stop. There was cross traffic, and my car stopped at the stop sign and then decided to inch forward into the intersection. It stopped while sticking out into the cross street, leaving partial room for cars to cross. A FedEx truck coming from the left stopped before the crossing and then began to cross. My car then decided that was a good time to go forward and accelerated rapidly. I had to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision; and the FedEx driver cursed at me. 2. Highway merge: I was in the center lane on a highway, and my exit was coming up on the right. The car decided it needed to get into the right lane to exit at the same time that a car was merging into the right lane from an on ramp. My car made it into the right lane, but it cut off the merging vehicle- the other car had to slam on its brakes; and the driver honked at me 3. Complex intersection: I was going straight on a road where I had a stop sign at an intersection where I could only go straight. Traffic coming toward me could either continue straight or veer left onto a road that came off at a diagonal to my right. Cars coming from the road to my right had only one option- continue onto the road in front of me. At the stop sign, my car handled oncoming traffic fine. However, it completely ignored the cars merging from my right; and after stopping at the stop sign, it tried to accelerate right into a car that was merging. I had to slam on my brakes. Conclusion: FSD is not ready for prime time.
Slows too quick for speed change: Blame NHTSA. It used to just coast down. Gov't said when speed limit drops, do it NOW. Too many nags? Blame NHTSA. They are constantly pushing for more nags. You didn't mention "full stops" because they are an unnatural, pain in the butt too.... however, Teslas used to roll them like a normal driver, BUT... you guessed it! Blame NHTSA! ;)
Considering you're not even on v12 and you're probably not aware of how fast v12 is improving with every new release every couple of weeks, you've convinced me that FSD is well worth the $99 per month.
If you ask me, unless you want to be a frontliner, i think down the road as FSD becomes a normality on Tesla or other cars, it will be free of charge. Think about it.. most circinately Tesla will sell FSD to other car brands and in case someone becomes very competitive, Tesla can always lower the price of the car , by reducing the FSD to free. It instantly gives a 10$K advantage over competition using their FSD service.
I bought a used M3 that already had FSD. I've never had the abrupt slowdown on the highway you talk about. I'll admit it's definitely not perfect but those issues (and your complaints) are random anomalies that will be ironed out. If you knew how much it has improved in only the last 6 months, you'd have no doubts at how good it will be in another 6 months. Funny you liked the autopark. I find that to be the most useless feature. I tried it once and yes it works, but it's excruciatingly slow. I can park in 5 seconds, and it takes 30-45...and for benefit? This will only be useful for the future "go park yourself" summon feature.
Thank you for your video. I thank Tesla for letting me try the FSD feature for 30 days. I am currently using the FREE FSD 12.3.6 till June 9th - and I also will not be buying FSD. Being retired, I just feel FSD is not required for my short trips I do in town. Also that monthly 99 dollars is needed for home and car items. If there comes a time I feel FSD is necessary, I will then subscribe. For the next paragraph, I am using FSD in the Average mode. Most the time FSD works well but FSD seems to do a few weird things. First, I don't like the Accelerations, are way too fast sometimes from stop signs, lights, etc Second, does some hesitations on neighborhood streets when it should just keep going smoothly - some stop and go hesitations at some intersections, but It is nice that the FSD is very cautious when enabled. I also don't need Auto Park and Summons features. I do not drive on expressways anymore and if I do I still have the free Auto Pilot or Cruise Control. There is a version 12.4 coming very soon, but I probably won't get a chance to try that for free
At this point in time the software for FSD is still unrefined and not very smooth. I think one day it will get to the point where is feels just like another human is driving but at this point it's still too glitchy. Thank you including your experiences!
I live in an urban area, and I decided against purchasing/renting FSD as well. The cost/benefit ratio just didn’t add up for me. And, like you, I actually enjoy driving and the included Auto Pilot is fine for those times I use it. Very good video and run down on FSD. 👍🏼
I've read that earlier models have radar sensors in the bumper making the FSD experience a little bit better in terms of reducing the abrupt changes in speed, stopping, etc. I think as FSD continues to progress with each iteration it will get better but 8k is a hefty price tag for the software at this point. Did the FSD fair better in your urban area? Definitely not something I would trust on these rural back roads.
@@BoondockTesla I have a ‘21 M3 with radar and those sensors front/rear. I only used the FSD one time that month, and I found it ok. But like you said, not worth the 8 large. I might try renting it for a longer trip to SoCal I’ve got coming up. We will see.
