  • Peppers come in so many sizes, shapes, colors, and heat levels! We grow many different varieties for our spring plant sale each year and we have a big backyard garden too. We eat them fresh and also prepare them in so many ways. We freeze-dry, smoke, dehydrate, freeze, pickle, and powder them to turn them into so many delicious things. This is our 2024 list of peppers we are growing this year from the smallest sweetest mini bells to some of the hottest peppers to grow. We love peppers of culinary interest from all over the world!
One of my goals this year is to make my own dried chiles and hot sauces so we have a bunch of my favorite Mexican flavors represented. chilaca/pasilla, chile de arbol, poblano/Ancho, guajillo/mirasol. We make cayenne pepper powder and smoked paprika. Aji Rico makes a great smoked powder and yellow cayenne pepper in fun! We're trying some new flavors to us on recommendations from others. This year we are trying Jimmy Nardello, a black Hungarian, Ausilio thin thin-skinned Italian, and Aji Mojo and Aji Amarillo.
I love the variety of heat in peppers. We grow heatless habanero and jalapeno varieties, medium hot and very hot varieties as well. So many varieties have a good history behind them of culinary uses all over the world! Check out what we love and leave a suggestion of something you love to grow or eat too!

I cut into a Scotch Bonnet one time and the mist burned my eyes and face OFF... I was screaming for my kids to bring me water to rinse myself with. The pain lasted for almost an hour! I considered going to the hospital. Will NEVER come within 100 feet of those things again... lol Really enjoy your tomato and pepper reviews... learning a lot. Thanks!

My favorite pepper for frying, stuffing etc is the Cubanelle. It has a very good flavor without the "burpy" aftertaste of a green Bell pepper - it's sweeter and easier on the digestion - especially for older people.

I love Just Sweet, the first year I had it in my garden was 2020, and the derecho flattened everything- but these peppers continued producing even blown over for the rest of the season. Sweet and tasty, too!

I have grown Chile de Arbol since 2019. You are going to love it. Absolutely wild production, and it made the BEST chili flakes I have ever had. Of course, growing them again this year and they're OP so easy to save seeds for without much worry.

Looking forward to growing chile de arbol. My favorite mild sauce is just that pepper so makes sense to make my own. I am a huge pepper head and I absolutely love and cheerlead for everyone to grow any or every AJI variety for real! So versatile and I personally love the balance of heat and flavor profile . Growing 7-8 varieties myself this year 😋

The Aji's are so good! I'm excited for the chile de arbol too. Good luck this year!

Trying to grow a bunch of Sugar Rush Stripey, this year. They’re supposed to taste the same as a Sugar Rush Peach, but naturally ripen to have thin Red stripes. So pretty!
I’ve heard of people mostly using the Sugar Rush varieties for snacking, pickling & hot sauce. I was hoping to find out if they’re good Smoked. If it’s naturally sugary in taste, would that make a good rub for meats? Amateur here; never smoked anything in my life, but I’ll try this year. It’s a relatively new variety; I just haven’t seen anyone try to make powder or flakes with Sugar Rush…

And this is just the ones we are growing for this years sale. Steven has added about 30 more varieties for the test plots for this summer. It's an adventure.

I'm trying a sweet, red, pepper from Nicaragua called Criolla de Cocina. It's fruit is thinner walled and smaller than a bell pepper, but the flavor is supposed to be fantastic.

I'm a big fan of Jalefuego peppers. I haven't grown the Aji types, but I need to try them. I have used dried chile de arbol and guajillo peppers in recipes...very tasty! I would love to see videos on recipes using these peppers! I used to live in New Mexico and fell in love with the New Mex flavors, especially the Hatch chiles.

Sounds great! The Aji types are so cool. We have thousands of pepper seedlings growing right now but I can tell even without looking when I get to a tray of the Aji to water because even the foilage is fragrant in a nice peppery way. I have lots of plans for the chiles too. I really love those flavors too!

Have you tried Gypsy pepper? I think burpee has them. They’re sooooooooo good. Very sweet little pepper. So far my favorite

I like the Cayenne Sweetness, it doesn't have any heat. They can be dried or I chop them up and and them to an omelet.

Glad to see you guys fire up the videos again for the spring. Sort of my annual timer to get serious about seeds. If we wanted a plant or two of these ones you mentioned, will they be for sale?

Thanks! We’re all about getting ready for spring now too. We do sell all of the peppers we mentioned plus a few. I keep adding to my list. If you are local we are taking preorders now and people will schedule to pick them up during the month of May. Here’s a link to the whole list!

Lesya is named after the Ukranian city, and from what I can gather, is pronounced "Lay-sa" more or less. I grew it last year and was disappointed. I had several that formed, and they were beautiful, but the taste was pretty "meh", I thought. Not terribly sweet, just a bit bland. I'm not growing it again this year. My surprise star last year was Etiuda! They were as orange as, well, an orange and the taste was outstanding. Super crisp, extremely sweet and a very vibrant flavor. I'd intended to use them for stir fry, but they were so good raw, that very few made it to the stove top!

Thanks for that information. Leysa so far the fruit looks interesting but we haven’t had a chance to taste them yet. Thanks for recommending Etiuda, those look amazing! I might have to try those next year. My favorite sweet peppers don’t often make it into recipes either, they are so good fresh! Thanks for sharing!

@@iowabackyardfarmer2952 for a bell pepper, Etiuda was surprisingly productive, but I'm in NC, zone 8aa, so we have a pretty long growing season. They did form pretty quickly though, and several got nice and big.

Yesterday we watched the tomato version of this and today was the pepper video. Thanks for sharing! So funny you brought up New Mexico green chili. Did you know you can grow “Hatch” green chilies with seed from Sandia seed company? It’s not grown in Hatch so can’t be called hatch but it’s the same seed. We grew these last year and it was AMAZING! Recommend Big Jim variety. We are adding a few additional chile varieties this year to try. If you’re interested we made a video: Grow Green Chile In A Northern Climate

Thanks for the response! Your video was great! I’m a big fan of the Hatch chiles. I was on the Sandia website just yesterday looking for Big Jim seeds! They were out of the one I wanted but I found several other varieties to try. I’m on a dried red chile mission this year. We have a roaster just like yours but a little smaller and green chile is my favorite!!! Your farm looks awesome! 💕
