I love to read and Write and my dream is to be published. When I was talking to my mom in the car and I said "If I write a book-" Then she said, "WHEN you write a book."
My mother told me if writing was something I truly wanted to write, go for it. I thought I was in a movie that day. Now, she is like my biggest fan. I am working on my seventh book.
My name at school is 'book worm' I read over 500 - 1000 pages a week and write dailey. Literally, I am only 14 and sometimes I forget school work cause I get so into my work. You are my hero for writing! I love your work and I cant wait for the day someday when I'm published
I'm eleven and I want to write a book, I'm just not sure I can do it. All my life people have been telling me my writing is great, but it wasn't till last year I realized it. I've been working on the story-line since November in 2015 (I daydream in math class a lot; I can't focus on math very well). The story is awesome, but when I write it I feel like it's too hard. All the characters end up like characters from other books. I've even had to change from my original 1st person idea because the main character sounds too much like Percy. It's hard focusing on keeping the characters unique. Xavier bothers me the most; his dad is the main villain and he always ends up acting like Nico di Angelo. I want to write it really badly, but most people tell me I can't do it because I'm eleven. Do you guys have any suggestions?
I've written three books. I started when I was almost thirteen and am now almost 16. What you must never do when writing a book is give up. Many people will start a book, and be filled with inspiration and just love the story and characters and everything, then suddenly this horrible thing happens, when everything begins to look dry. You get sick of your story. Truth be told, I get like that all the time. Also before I wrote my trilogy, I had worked on several book ideas. I started writing at seven years old. However I could never find a book that seemed to fit me. (I love Narnia and the Lord of the rings and classic authors.) So finally I hit a book idea, that worked for me. Point find your passion and write it. and yes get used to daydreaming in math about it, and also suddenly bursting out of no where "I've got it!" because that will happen a lot too. NO ! You are not too young to write. My sister had the same problem you have except a little more severe. She had never watched the mask of Zoro, but she ended up creating an almost identical story! Even her main character had one of the same names! She gave up but she shouldn't have and I urge you not to. Also each person will have a unique writing style. If your main character sounds like percy, you are probably a humorous person as percy is very funny and also nobal. You can read other books for other character ideas, but never forget to let you into your books...good luck and write!
Rick Riordan i am 11 years old and I have read all the Percy Jackson books all the heroes of Olympus books and all the Kane chronicle books I am very excited for your new series Magnus Chase and the gods of asgard I am currently writing a book and I intend to get it published when I finish you have inspired me to be a writer and I hope one day I will be as talented as you and I just wanted to say thank you for not only providing me with hours of entertainment with your books but for also inspiring me to write also so again thanks
thanks for the tips! i'm 12, i found out that my talent is writing when i was still 8. i always had writers block and sometimes, i give up just because of it. but now, never.
That last comment really stuck out to me. I've been writing since I was 6 and have started many novels in the past, but I never happened to finish any.
Thank you. I was 70,000 words in an I just stopped September last year. I was so close to the end but I just...gave up. I will finish it and I will get published. I am sat here today on my laptop looking for jobs only to be turned down every phone call I make, and here sitting in a dusty file in the corner of my computer is what could be my dream job. Something i love doing, my saving grace. Thank you.
All this advise is true. I'm 13 years old and I just finished my first novel, now I'm working on editing it and getting it published. My novel is 10 chapters and I worked really hard on it. For kids like me out there, my advise is the same as Rick's, especially the practicing. When I started writing I wanted it to be a really big, but then I realized that this is my first novel and it doesn't have to be long and best selling, that's just not how it works. So before you sit down to write your first novel, make sure you have an idea that you like and never stop writing until the end. All through my novel I wanted to quiet, but I never did because I loved my idea. So, if anyone around my age is looking to write a novel, take this advise. Trust me, I'm an author.
+SourRazzles You're really brave, i started writing when i was about 14 years old. Although i'm writing a book series, and a really long one, i agree on your tips. I have no plans on getting anything published any time soon, so i think it's really great that you've decided to take that step.
Funny you say that when you misspelled "your" "ADVICE is written with a 'C'. I bet your novel is a great reflection of (you) *YOUR* amazing spelling skills." Quit your bullshit.
Honestly this video helped a lot. I’m 11 and wanting to write a book and hearing this from my favorite author really encouraged me. I now know to not give up.
Classic but absolutely perfect advice. I wish this video could be broadcasted into the minds of every aspiring writer (young or old) every day right before they get to work.
Great advice! :) Thanks! I'm almost done with the story I'm writing. It's an idea I've had for years, but finally started writing it in December. I'm 15, and I've started writing other stories in the past. Yet, until the one I'm currently writing, I've never had enough determination to finish.
This is awesome, hearing advice from my most favorite author ever. I’ve wanted to write books ever since 4th grade, but back then, I didn’t know many important writing things. Now that I’m older and I’ve read lots more books and learned important grammar skills and writing skills, I feel I’m ready.
I'm writing a book and started with the climax. Everybody that I've shown it to have said that its impressive and great. I almost stopped writing because of all the homework I've gotten. This video inspired me to keep on going. My friend showed it to me. So thanks!!! and writing books comes so easy to me for some reason...
That might help. Thanks. And I had the "take a pen and notebook" advise before. I never really did it because I usually remember what I come up with by the time I find a pen and paper. I don't like writing with people around because I worry they'd try to read what I write over my shoulder.
Same thing happens to me, best thing I find to do is: Take a pen and notebook everywhere. When waiting for someone, or in the car not driving, take it out in your free time. Write details, like profiles, or start a chapter. Then when your home and on youtube reread what you write or type it up as you lesson to the video. Hope that helpes.
Nice tips, I'm 14 and I'm writing a fantasy adventure book. It's really cool. When I get writers block I do other things like make up names for future characters, or read new books, or draw a map for the place I'm writing about. It helps a lot, especially when I read other books. Like what this guy said, it fuels you.
I am 15 years old;& I am the youngest poet of word-poetry moment.I published my poetry at 13 years old. I've being writing ever since I was eight. But now im going to take a whole new level into publishing an actual novel.
rick riordan is my idol. i am currently 12 and my english teacher says i am the best writer she has seen in her 11 years. i really want to become an author. the pervy jackson series is my favorite collection of hooks ever. i am currently writing on fanfiction and i get really good reviews.
The last tip is especially helpful. I was looking up a lot of "how to write a novel" things on google, and listening to a harry potter thing, when all of a sudden an image popped into my head, just like a movie, and played out. I had never seen this place before, nor this characters, and wasn't even thinking about it. But it's been in my head for a few days, demanding to be written, so I figure I'll follow the scene and see where it takes me. Fingers crossed!
I'm writing a book. Got an idea in my head while reading a ton of different books, and started with the climax. People said it was great. But I almost stopped because of school. This video encouraged me to go on. Hope the book gets published. Almost done with it!
Rick Riordan. Your the only author that i've read all their books so far. The whole entire Percy Jackson Series[watched the movie as well!] The Kane Chronicles. And the Heroes Of Olympus. I'm glad to see they brought back in the first prophecy gang!
im trying to write a novel and im soo excited because i have already written 27 pages/12,121 words so far!! when i sent the first chapter out to an editor the were interested in it. :)
i have trouble concentrating at school (especially math). ppl say they understand what it feels like but most of them dont. i like writing but its hard to just sit there and write. i have a ton of good ideas but of course its too hard to write them. but thank you for the message. i will try again. :)
This man is an amazing writer and i completely feel connection to his characters. I love where he comes from and his respect for fantasy. Even into highschool i CRAVE his writing more than anything.
I love science fiction an dystopian novels. I wasn't a vigorous reader untill my mom bought me Rick Riordan's first book of the Olympians( lightning thief) on my 13 th b'day. After reading that book, I became really addicted to novels. Like I can't live without reading at least three books a day! It has been three years of much reading and I am 15 now. It will be a great age to publish my novel. I hope I'll finish in time and publish my dystopia book!!!! Arghhhh! So exicited :D wish me luck ;)
I'm 14 and my life goal is to be a writer. I actually took a class in school that is all about writing. I've recently started writing my own book, and I'm pretty sure it's grabbed me pretty well. I'm hearing references to my characters in almost every song I hear, and when I'm not writing about it I'm thinking about it in some way (for instance, in class today instead of studying physics I was drawing story-related doodles).
I'm eleven years old and working on my first book, but I keep stopping myself and trying to criticize my work. A piece of advice for you writers out there: My mom, who is a college professor of creative writing, once told me that sometimes, you have to silence your inner editor and just get words on the page. Then, once you've gotten some stuff done, you can go back and be as picky as you want to be.
If its well written and thought out rather than just one shots and stories people come back to update once every few months with no idea where the plot is going. I read a lot of it too i want to start writing full length stories so people don't have to wait if its a good story and update ill plan it all out and update it often if i get enough feedback and follows. I have one for skyrim rn ive started.
Reading things outloud helps alot too. Or printing and writing on the paint helps me. Getting punished is hard, more then likely you'll need an agent. There are many ways to find them, like books and interweb. But I would pop over to the Library first and read about it.
Realmente no soy el mejor escuchando ingles, pero entiendo absolutamente todo lo que dice. lo tomare en cuenta, cause i want to be a writer. i am 18, and i've been writing 1 year ago. Everyday, I write until dawn my own book without stopping and continued in the afternoon. It's amazing what a person can do to motivate hundreds. thank you very much Rick Riordan
Thanks!!! Just one more chapter and I'll finish the first book in my sereis! I just hope it gets published...I havent boon going on youtube because of how much time I've put into the book. 7 drafts, and i am choosing the best ones! Should be done by Friday :D
Well, first of all, you gotta have a drive. Believe me, I've been there and honestly I'm not that done yet. I always keep switching stories, starting over again and basically, getting nowhere. Trick is, you gotta have a drive. Ask yourself "Is this really the story I wanna write?" If it's not, then well, you gotta find THAT one story that you HAVE to write. The one you have to tell the world about. When you find it... it would kill you not to finish it. Hope it helps! Good Luck on the writing!
thanks i read and write alot! last year my teacher told me to write a book so i hand written a 21 chapterbook and i finished it and my teacher told me to publish it, but i dont know how. p.s. your one of my authors to read from
As writers we need to get over our conceit. We've all had it - or still do. Being the best in your class - I'm the best in mine - ain't much of an achievement - I am still unpublished. Remember the lesser you see yourself, the greater you can grow ... - but no one ones to grow - your happy the way your are and you expect to be successful at the same time. Growing is tough - but its worth it. Be humble - and you'll go far! - An ex-conceited writer
Well, you could try to start with a joke or something so you could tell the reader that "This ain't a boring, humorless book." Or you could start with something really big like somebody is chasing them and then tell the story of how it happened to keep the readers excited or interested and that usually works because as a reader, I love guessing how it happened based on the clues. Hope it helps! Good Luck on the writing. ;)
Use Google Docs. I was pretty bad with spelling but two months in front of Google Docs got me writing correctly... most of the time at least. Practice, practice, practice.
I am 16 years old and I love to write AND read. I've been told I'm a great writer by friends, teachers and even total strangers but I always seem to give up before I finish writing. Tips, please?
All my books I write actually come to me n a dream... Literally... If I have a dream that has a storyline, plot, and it actually makes sence I twist it and make it into a book! I make movies/shows too (but I never have time to film them) I plan to post a show series called Ocean Mysteries to TH-cam in about 3-5 years... I know it's a long time but it's about high schoolers and I'm only in 7th grade but I promise the show will be good!
I am 12 years old and I am like planning to write a fantasy story but the thing is that I created a school were the main character studies and the school is for students who have disorders. The main character in my book als has ADHD and looks like Percy Jackson. I-I I am so depressed rn like the book I enjoyed writing so much is like another persons book so I am like so sad. I literally want to tear my book apart. I really don't know what to do
I love science fiction or dystopian novels. I wasn't a vigorous reader till one day when my mon gave me the first book of Rick Riordan(the lightning thirf
i have a huge imagination it could seriously make a whole series in one day in my head. of corse its a lot harder to put it on paper. my big problem is when i start to write it ends up just copying another story.
Well since we're all showing off our 'careers so far' - Let me show off a gloomier story: I've been rejected probably over fifty times (in total for two novels). It's been horrible - painful and disappointing. I've written 3 novels - so far. Thankfully, a few months ago, I had a moment - I finally admitted to myself that it was ME and not the publishers that was to blame for my lack of success. Recently I met a published writer -now a really good friend and mentor - she's teaching me everything!
I LOVE RICK RIORDON AND TERA LYNN CHILDS!!!!!!!!!!!!! they r my insperation :) i LOVE greek mythology and i am rick riordons biggest #1 fan im trying to collect all his books and read every single one of them and i read the lost hero in 2 days
I suggest that if you want to he an author you should start by writing fanfictions. This takes away the need to make characters, plots and setting and allows you to focus on the actual writing part of it. Also, sites such as fanfiction.net tend to be very social sites. Writer share opinions, write review and can even check spelling and grammar for you so you get constructive criticism and improve your weak point or exercise your strong point when you think it's needed.
Another way to take away from the need to make characters, plots and settings is to (if a realistic fiction) book, base it off of your own experiences and give the main character a personality similar to your's.
There is a story that has grabbed my attention and is begging me to write it, and has been for three years now. But my only problem is I like to procrastinate... a lot. I know I should be writing but instead I'm on TH-cam. I'm always on TH-cam. How do I keep focused on my writing without wanting to wander off to TH-cam or some other site?
300 pages Done! God! That Took Forever!!!! Thanks For The Advice Rick! 1: Do I Read Alot: Hellz Yea! 2: Do I Practice: Yup :3 3:Did I Give Up: NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOOOOOOPE!!!!!!!
Good for you, best friend! ;) I still don't know what my climax is, but im reallllyyyy slowing down because of school too -.- hopefully u get urs published soon though, oh and make a second book to it! ;)
@thenarnianinja mee to! I come up with an epic series in my head but its so hard to find the things u wanna say on paper! And when I do write it it comes out like another book ive read!
Rick riordan helped me i started writing two books.one is called guide for demigods and the second one is son of the phoenix. And im only nine years old.
Magazines, competitions, editors, publishers, family, friends anyone who is willing to read your work. Good luck! P.S I am also an aspiring writer who has started on my first novel, if you wish send me a paragraph from your first chapter and I can give you some feedback, and I can send some of mine to be critiqued by you. Just a little something extra if you want something different, you never know, I may provide the feedback you were searching for, as you with I.

My dad says the same thing!
My mother told me if writing was something I truly wanted to write, go for it. I thought I was in a movie that day. Now, she is like my biggest fan. I am working on my seventh book.
My parents say that too!
Never have I clicked on something so quickly before in my life.
I'm writing a book and I've almost finished my first in my series thanks to Riordan's advice :) You sir are FANTASTIC!
I listen to this whenever I feel like giving up on the story I am writing
Nightcore_ Ricktor I watch Magic Beyond Words: The J. K. Rowling Story when I get writer's block and feel like giving up

Unfortunately not yet, I'm self editing right now and then I'll hand them over to an editor and hopefully then get them published, it's a big job! :)
This advice may seem barkingly obvious but Rick Reardon's advice is the absolute essence of what matters for any aspiring writer. Thank you . . .
Thanks! It seems like every author tells young writers to never give up, but they're soooooo right!!!
Thank you! Rick Riordan is my one true idol in life, and this advice really helped me.

Dang you’re probaly much older now! How’s your writing process going?
For some strange reason, Riordan reminds me of Luke Skywalker.
That last comment really stuck out to me. I've been writing since I was 6 and have started many novels in the past, but I never happened to finish any.

Same for me, im 19 now and I started writting a book when I was 17 and im barely even close to finished after all these years :

Congratulations! Keep going and try not to get discouraged by life and all its bumpy obstacles. I wish you the best of luck finishing the thing!
Thanks so much Rick Riordan, I did what you told us to do. And it helped me to publish my very first book.

Thank you sir, for tips! I will never give up! My dream is to get published before I die. I'm 14 so hopefully I still have a while to do so.
Thanks for the tip, Mr. Riordan
I am 15 too, and I want to be a published writer, albeit I am just a normal writer now like you. Good luck with your endeavors!
Thanks!
I read a lot of fanfic does that count?
If its well written and thought out rather than just one shots and stories people come back to update once every few months with no idea where the plot is going. I read a lot of it too i want to start writing full length stories so people don't have to wait if its a good story and update ill plan it all out and update it often if i get enough feedback and follows. I have one for skyrim rn ive started.
Awesome tips from a great writer!!! Thanks!!
@BookThief1023, I meant keep writing to you too, and good luck!!!
Thank you for all your books rick I couldn't write without them, hearing story's of demigods, you should write Nico di Angelo short stories
I love to read, I love to write, and I will not give up.
he's awesome
21 pages in 2 days. I'm jealous of all that fuel. Keep it going and good luck!
Thanks!!! Just one more chapter and I'll finish the first book in my sereis! I just hope it gets published...I havent boon going on youtube because of how much time I've put into the book. 7 drafts, and i am choosing the best ones! Should be done by Friday :D
I've got a dream, and it's called: I wanna be a writer!
Rick, could you make a series about Jason Grace, like you did with Percy Jackson? It would be so awesome to know Jason's background.
thanks i read and write alot! last year my teacher told me to write a book so i hand written a 21 chapterbook and i finished it and my teacher told me to publish it, but i dont know how. p.s. your one of my authors to read from
As writers we need to get over our conceit.
I'm 11 and I'm currently writing a fantasy novel "James Biddleweed and the Golden Heart"> I do hope I can publish this book someday!
Good Luck on the writing. ;)
I love to wright stories but I never got to it because I can't spell stuff
lol me too but you can use autocorrect on a computer
your right- you can't spell 'write' right
Use Google Docs. I was pretty bad with spelling but two months in front of Google Docs got me writing correctly... most of the time at least. Practice, practice, practice.
youre*
its okay.even published writers depend a lot on editors.
These are great tips
I am 16 years old and I love to write AND read. I've been told I'm a great writer by friends, teachers and even total strangers but I always seem to give up before I finish writing. Tips, please?
I have written a 27 a4 book and I want to get it published😍
I'm only ten and writing to me is inspiring Rick riordan inspired me to write
I wasn't a vigorous reader till one day when my mon gave me the first book of Rick Riordan(the lightning thirf
i'll take a look too :)
thanks, short and very cool
i have a huge imagination it could seriously make a whole series in one day in my head. of corse its a lot harder to put it on paper. my big problem is when i start to write it ends up just copying another story.
My teacher constantly complemented me on my writing skills & urged me to enter competitions or publish. Although, I'm so lazy...
Also if you don't want to get your books in stores just yet but want to share them go on Wattpad.com
I'm 11 years old, I have been writing a book page by page since I was 8
Great advice......
I love your books
There is a story that has grabbed my attention and is begging me to write it, and has been for three years now. But my only problem is I like to procrastinate... a lot. I know I should be writing but instead I'm on TH-cam. I'm always on TH-cam. How do I keep focused on my writing without wanting to wander off to TH-cam or some other site?
300 pages Done! God! That Took Forever!!!! Thanks For The Advice Rick!

I'm writing 4 books and I'm actually only in year 6 :D
