Firewatch is one of those rare gems, that just never got the attention it deserved. It's one of those games, those stories, that sticks with you. I really don't know what Campo Santo has been doing since, but they really need to make more stuff.
After playing, I really felt like I needed a literary criticism of this story bc it is sooo good. And the end does end up being perfect. Because Henry is ironically put in the same situation that he left his wife in: being left behind and forgotten because of his proximity to a traumatic event. Because it’s who Delilah is and it’s also who Henry is- people running away from their problems and hurting the ones they love in the process. There’s so much more to say and I do feel like Delilah and even Ned to an extent symbolize and mirror back parts of Henry’s internal struggle. I kind of felt like Delilah might be a stand-in for his internal voice and she certainly has some similar problems. Ned is a guy who decided never to leave the forest because he can’t confront the reality of the death he experienced there. And the final scene is about trying to escape the forest and it feels like we’re physically leaving but part of us will be stuck there forever.
Once i watched one guy talking for hours about firewatch i couldnt stop hahah, i loved this a lot, idk why im getting so interested watching hour long long videos about firewatch.. and to think i only knew firewatch bc of the stanley parable just a day ago
Thank you! It means a lot. Currently working on my next video for these Retrospectives and it’s been nice seeing this video go well these last few weeks :)
There’s another detail I noticed in the game that not a lot of players noticed. The picture with Julia would be facing down on the desk whenever a new day starts. I would always stand it back up if there was a part of the day I was in the tower.
Not to mention that Henry removes his wedding ring between one day and the next, and you have the option to put it back on. Such great storytelling in this game.
I look back on this video and I’m proud that I’ve gotten so many people talking in the comments, but even I think I could’ve explained the actual ending better. It’s a deeply “human” experience
@fallinghurts Very Welcome! This video and others despite covering the story really well, inspired me to get the game and experience it myself, in fact I just saved my game for the first time for a break. Look forward to future projects of yours!
I'm wondering why people call this ending disapointing. It was the most special moment ive had in a videogame besides outer wilds. I guess its because of my choices. I never wanted relationship with Delila and any advances she made made me cringe and instantly try to get out of it. Just the forest burning down, that music, the absolute melancholy! Me remembering every good and bad memory as I walk past certain spots, I realize how much I love the forest. I just walk around, in awe of the burning forest for 20 minutes. I told Delila to go beforehand so I was not expecting to find her. I did not tell her to come with me as I did not want to do that to Julia. I love this forest. And if it was an option, I would have just let myself burn in it. Not because of suicidal reasons for the charachter, but jsut because of the aboslute beauty and melancholy. Youre disapointed at the plot, but youre supposed to be. Youre supposed to have waves of happiness, nostalgia, sadness, anger, every emotion flare as you leave the orange forest. I was just in awe. What an amazing game and what a stunning ending. The chrachter growth Henry has is insane, learning to stop running away from his problems. And he will never foregt Delilah and she will never foget him, even though nothing romantic ever happened between them, they both helped eachother grow and have a place in eachothers hearts. They will always have that summer in their memories. And leaving that burning forest with that music, jsu tthe whole atmosphere that gets close to even the ending of Outer Wilds will always be in my memory.
i played the whole game in 1 day, it was very good but i got lost at times and felt like i wasnt going the right way when i actually was, but thats my only complaint about the whole game, and likely just my bad navigation skills.
It is an emotional affair between the two of them and I'm not saying it's right Just that in the context of his situation it's His wife hasn't remembered who he is for some time now he's isolated himself from his friends even though let's be real one person can't give someone in his wife's condition the kind of care He hasn't connected to someone in a few years and he makes friends with a co-worker on the other side of a radio who's more than happy to let him open up and vent He gets to be vulnerable with someone for the first time since his wife's mind slipped too far away Yeah he came to the lookout tower for the isolation but he was alone and isolated for a long time before getting there And he meets this co-worker on the radio who's more than happy to let him open up and he developed an emotional dependency he was finally able to say the things out loud to someone that have just been percolating in his mind since his wife got so bad he had to put her in a nursing home
In real life (tm), Bruce Willis doesn't kick in the gas chamber door and save Scarlett Johansson at the last moment. We have to face the life we have created for ourselves. It took courage to deal this liver shot at the end of the game. Julia was always still there with us. Whatever the ultimate resolution was, it was never going to be on that mountain with Delilah...

Last I heard, they were assigned to help on Half Life Alyx, but man. I really wanted that next game. Thanks for stopping by!
I remember playing it. Only once. I never forgot it.
The more I watch people play this game, the more I love the ending.
Firewatch has been my favorite game for the past seven years, and I want to say that your analysis was perfect-a true hidden gem of a video.
Thank you so much! It means a lot. I’m hoping to finish script for the next one over holidays. Have a good one!

That video is so so so good, I wanna show it to all my friends, and I’m so sad it didn’t got as much attention as it deserves.

This is really well done
Thank you man! I’m actually about to start on the next one so this means a lot
I feel like too many people cant understand the ending so they just pretend like it ruins it
I look back on this video and I’m proud that I’ve gotten so many people talking in the comments, but even I think I could’ve explained the actual ending better. It’s a deeply “human” experience

This is a great encapsulation of what I think was intended. Thanks for stopping by man!
What a great game
Really underrated video
Thank you so much! As I do reviews and news mostly, I’m hoping to return to this video format soon for another one of my favorite games.
Brilliant video man

Instant Subscribe and this is a two year old video!
Thank you very much much! And I suppose happy new year lol

Ned late Vietnam more likely is too young to have been Korea I never got the sense he was much older than Henry maybe around 5 years at most
Really cool video
Thank you! I put a lot of time into this so it means a lot

I haven't watched the video yet on its entirety yet. So maybe I shouldn't comment. However every comment may help the algorithm.
Good intro
Thank you for stopping by man. That’s everything to me!
It is an emotional affair between the two of them and I'm not saying it's right
Just that in the context of his situation it's
His wife hasn't remembered who he is for some time now he's isolated himself from his friends even though let's be real one person can't give someone in his wife's condition the kind of care
He hasn't connected to someone in a few years and he makes friends with a co-worker on the other side of a radio who's more than happy to let him open up and vent
He gets to be vulnerable with someone for the first time since his wife's mind slipped too far away
Yeah he came to the lookout tower for the isolation but he was alone and isolated for a long time before getting there
And he meets this co-worker on the radio who's more than happy to let him open up and he developed an emotional dependency he was finally able to say the things out loud to someone that have just been percolating in his mind since his wife got so bad he had to put her in a nursing home
Fucking amazing.
It’s a great game for sure! Thanks for stopping by
