Shore deserved an Oscar for this magnificent work. I've just finished reading George Langelaan's book where the original short story "The Fly" is included, and this score fits perfectly with the dark, solemn mixture of tragedy and wonder he crafted for his imaginative tales.
5:29 is when Brundlefly, after merging with his own machine and becoming a horrific amalgamation of flesh and metal, places the gun barrel up to his head, begging to be put out of his misery. The last shred of humanity within him begging to be freed from his mutated body.
2:24 " I'm saying I-- I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake... I'm saying... I'll hurt you if you stay." One of the best lines in movie history, IMO. So great, so atmospheric, and you defo link Shore's music to overall impact of scenes like that.
The track at 3:49 is from a part of the movie that along with the ending of of the film, is so moving, that the film is elevated to a status that's almost impossible categorise. I remember as a 19 year old back in '86 thinking to myself, WTF have I just witnessed in that theatre? Horror? Sci-Fi? Love Story? Tragedy? All these years later, I like to just think of it as a masterfully made film that I was lucky enough to see on release. A film that has scenes that still haunt me to this day. Modern Day Classic Movie . . .
I was 13 I had already done a year in orchestra by that time...I played the cello parts...32 years on..I'm a bass player...so yeah it moved me and Still does...it deserves a hell of a lot more credit than its gotten...
this movie ruined my life lol. I was 13 when I saw it and it still continue to haunt me. Back in the day when I was young, I couldn't sleep without letting the light on
I was born in 88. I wish someday to see this movie in theatre. Never thought id see Alien, Aliens, The Terminator, but I did. Fingers crossed, someday ...this one too.

My favorite soundtrack from my favorite film. It is so moving and powerful. And now because of my own ongoing deterioration this film hits too close to home for me. I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it, but now the dream is over and the insect is awake.
+john smith that was what hit me most in this movie . the insect politics part . like many people dont understand why this is my favorite movie of all time and i cant really explain why but it just is . its been for years . the insect politics part is my favorite scene in the movie . i wonder if they gave him eye contacts in that scene because even his eyes look inhuman . anyway cronenberg for life XD
Absolutely one of the best movie soundtracks of all time! Not only does it sound awesome, It so captures the emotion of the story better than anything else I have seen. Perfection!
Saw this movie all the way through the other day after 20 years of seeing it. I understand the movie more through adult eyes. It was cool to watch as a kid though. The soundtrack to this film is amazing. I love classical music so this stuff is simply awesome.
The scene where Seth Brundle finds tragedy: Computer: [displays presence of primary and secondary teleportation elements] Seth Brundle: If primary element is Brundle, what is secondary element? Computer: Secondary element is not-Brundle. [identifies secondary element as a fly] Seth Brundle: If secondary element is fly, what happened to fly? Computer: Fusion. Seth Brundle: Assimilation? Did Brundle absorb fly? Computer: Negative. Fusion of Brundle and fly at molecular-genetic level.
Here's the thing about that scene: despite Seth's fears of becoming a lab animal experiment, I still think he should've told someone out in the open about what happened and got some kind of help. It's risky but it's better than suffering the transformation alone. Honestly, I would've just shot myself in the head after realizing what I'm becoming .....wtf is the point? You're dead either way!
Has to be the best horror movie i can think of , it throws you into the emotions of what if this was you and your partner type scenario , soundtrack is amazing and makes you sad everytime you listen to it and watch it
this movie is really possesing me now, im watching it daily, listening to the sound track, watching deleted scenes, and everytime i saw a fly in the past two days i freaked out cause one stood there and i looked at it and it was very fuckin scary!
Just saw this last night in 35mm on the big screen here in Portland. Last time I saw it that way was when it was originally released! Amazing movie that still holds up and the score is absolutely phenomenal! Thanks for sharing!
2:20 gives a sense of fear, sadness and impending doom. 3:25 a realization of horror. To me what is so good about this film is the possibility of something like this actually happening in the future.
3:20 I hear this bit and I see the text "Fusion of Brundlefly and Telepod successful." and I am like "Oh my god, what is going to come out the other side." Powerful stuff.
@Rising Victor, well said man, both him and Geena Davis (hope i spelt that right) were perfect in this film, the music complimented the scene beautifully
At 6:13 you can hear him begin to develop the style that he would use in Dead Ringers. The strings start to sound like Benjamin Britten or something like that. He took it a step further in Dead Ringers where during the macabe moments he exchanged some of the string lings with "grating " synth pads.
I agree with you 100% on your opinion about the future probabilities. Oh and to also add, the beginning sound somewhat like an opening to an orchrestra. I think what best about this movie besides the plot, actors, characters, probabilities, and special FXs is the musical score. I thought it added alot more drama to the movie than it really needed.
@farita86I You are so right. When I first saw that I cried. Jeff Goldblum is one of my favorite actors and to see him meet a terrible fate like that was just unbearible. What made it even more intense is the dramatic music. One of the only few times where the song delivers way too much dramatic tension than the movie really needs.
Um filmaço! Clássico absoluto dos anos 80! Lembro da primeira vez que assisti, fiquei angustiado quando Brundle perde para morrer e recebe um tiro da cabeça dado por sua namorada!
While I for many reasons find The Exorcist to be the most effective movie, ever made... I came to remember this masterpiece, and to be honest I actually find this movie better than the aformentioned. Seemingly horrific in a different way, it conveys a deeper emotional impact, balancing between true felt horror and agony for a very lovable man, where The Exorcist is purely targeting the viewer with fear beyond reckoning, questioning science and belief.
0:50 Remember the scene in The Return of the King where Gothmog, the Orc-chieftan, says "The age of Men is over.... the time of the Orc has come!" Same exact music playing. Go look it up and see for yourself! Just a fun fact.
I love this movie. Croneyboig is my favourite director. This movie is the apex of horror for me. In a weird way, I think this is where Howard Shore hit his stride. I hate admitting it but his work in films prior was crap. Yet this was his first truly great soundtrack, and save for a couple duds he's been putting out great stuff ever since.
ahh the 1980's. gotta love that decade of decadence. the 5 greatest horror films came out that time: Poltergeist, the thing, the fly, hellraiser and an american werewolf in london.
@harsawa What about "Videodrome" and "Scanners"? Those soundtracks were pretty good as well. I mean, they weren't nearly as emotional as "The Fly" and definitely not as good, but they weren't meant to be this emotional or operatic. The strange, trippy, electronic soundtrack for those two movies were not too bad.
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah haha and the design of the creatures in them haha! Also the way that the remakes of the thing, the blob, and the fly ended. The originals weren't nearly as gloomy in their endings. In the Blob, the psycho priest still has a piece of the creature that he plans to unleash on the world, the thing had only two survivors who didn't know if each other were human, and the fly was killed by his crying girl friend with a shotgun to the head.
@ spiritgirl41192 , yeh I read up on that cuz I always thought, wow, they look really convincing as a couple who are in love and hey turns out they were dating after all, yeh tiz a shame they split up but thats life.......I really love this movie lol, might have to watch it again

So many elements of this movie are fantastic. Howard Shore. David Cronenburg, Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, Brundlefly. HELP ME BE HUMAN.

YES COOL MAN
The guy that composed this should have got an oscar or whatever they give to the people who compose film scores.

such a phenomanol film score. amazing down to its very core and it really strikes a nerve. sooo powerful.
Esta música transmite um senso de grandiosidade. Perfeita para o clima de "A Mosca".
While he may not have been recognized for The Fly (or Silence of the Lambs or Naked Lunch), at least Howard Shore finally got his due with LotR.
