My best friend since 3rd grade passed away at 31 in a car crash in 2013. We always all used to say whichever of us passed away first would get Gone Away played at their funeral. So we did that.
I have to say “Dirty Magic” was highly influential in my life not only for the song but for my anecdote that was spurned by it. I went to middle school with Christina Aguilera and there was a talent show that we played Dirty Magic at and she sang…then national anthem? I can’t remember. All I know is that we won that damn talent show so thank you for that.
I'm not claiming to be much of a singer, but I myself am the opposite; I have a fairly high speaking voice but my singing voice is much lower. Also, I hate my own voice lol.
I was on their concert in Minsk, Belarus in 2019. One of the most unforgettable memories in my life! Great to see you in a good mood! God bless! Happy New Year!
The kids arent alright really hits with me, my cousin committed suicide right after this song came out and it just captured all my feeling at the time.
First concert i ever saw was these guys at the riverstage in Brisbane. 20 years later still vivd in my mind. A special moment in my life. Still occasionally have to crank out 'The Kids Arent Alright,' in the car ride home.
Still a fan, maybe even bigger. The guitar parts of course also drums and bass but the guitar parts the melodies the singing you his voice LOve it.The riff to the kids arent allright just freakin awesome., and so many more All good to You all
If the Offspring ever reads this, thanks for the music especially making it fun, nowadays the fun part is missing....what set you apart from others is sheer variety and fun elements....I still remember hearing your Smash album coming out of the speakers of my cousins car and in my head I felt like it was candy, I never heard music being so melodic and so fast and rocky before that....❤
That's awesome you got to see them there. I never got to go to any shows at SuperToad. I did see The Offspring when they headlined Lazerfest 10 years ago.
I grew up with Offspring & Dexter & Noodles always seemed like genuine good dudes. I'm also a musician "Ghostlikefriend" & some of my inspiration comes from them.
Gone away will always be a special song but at the same time a hard song for me to listen to, it reminds me of my brother who passed ❤... On a lighter note Dexter is in my mom's yearbook for Pacifica Highschool. And Noodles is in my uncle's yearbook for the same school lol . Love you guys 🤘
I've been listening to this band since they released their album Smash, which I believe was the first one to actually have any impact outside the US. As a teen I related to many of their lyrics, and I got to see them live a few times over the past 20 years. They're amazing performers! It's always nice to go back to their music, and I hope I can see them live onceagain before I'm too old to withstand the mosh.
You mean the molecular biologist with the PhD and understood the science behind the vaccine wanted people to be safe and not die. What a terrible thing.
Right? It's crazy that they wrote all those awesome deep cuts on earlier records and yet never play them live. I get that some tracks don't work as well as others live, or aren't as easy to sing/dance to at a concert but...never? C'mooooooooon guys!
Huh, guess you're not too familiar with these guys. They've fired at least half of the members they've played with over their career. I do still enjoy the music at times, but these two come across as bullies to me.
@@alpur214 I guess YOU'RE not too familiar with these guys. From '87 till '03 they were the same four guys (16 years). Greg K, the original bassist stayed until '18, so they were 3/4 OG members for 31 years. Doesn't seem like bullies to me.
@@afaik1Ben Pete Parada was fired from the band for not taking the Covid vaccine. His doctor had advised him against it because he might have an adverse reaction due to suffering from Guillain-Barré syndrome.
I was in 7th grade when I heard Gone Away for the first time. I didn't know any English whatsoaver, but I felt all the pain of this song. And to this day I feel lump in my throat when I hear this song.
1:00 Noodles, Im pretty sure we All thought that. Lookn at my old as pics before ai join the Marines. I was a good lookin guy aswell. Glad you sd that. 🤘
Remember seeing these guys in Munchies in Pomona and Spankys way back in the day early 90s before "Smash" came out which made the band become famous on Epitaph records. Smash is a great album even though became a bit pop upbeat still wrote quite meaningful and dark punk songs. Ignition still is also a great classic punk rock album as well.
Self-esteem and soon after the whole album and also Ixnay on the Hombre marked my life, great guys and a band I'll take to the grave with me. Kudos to them 🤟👍🥂
I only new the offspring for pretty fly but my now 13 year old son has kind of gotten me into the offspring with the song 'your gonna go far kid' epic song, crazy how I'm into rock but never really got into you guys but now my little lad is rocking and got me into yous
Agreed, I didn't want it to end. I was hoping they'd cover some of their more obscure videos like She's Got Issues, which features one Zoe Deschanel. I hope I spelled her name correctly 😅
These A-holes claimed to be punk while they kicked their drummer out so they could obey "the man". Them reacting to their own music is one of the most solipsistic, non-punk things I've seen in awhile.
In some way the Offspring were the voice of the generation. They never were "that iconic" as for example Nirvana, simply because Dexter was not that drug/mentally damaged type of rock star. Yet his totally on point and in the same time poetic lyrics resonated deeply with countless kids in the 90s, reaching across all subcultures.
@ yeah I knew about all that. Was just curious. I always look at it from a business perspective, The Offspring is a business so I wondered if he had a problem with the individuals ( Dexter Noodles) or just the company.
I'm surprised they talked about him in this video. I think they had a very bitter break-up, same with Greg... For the record, I think Ron was a pretty sloppy drummer, but I feel he actually contributed to their signature sound. It wasn't the same band after they parted ways.
Nobody. Surprisingly he wrote it after being on a date with his wife. While on said date the place was held up at gun point by robbers. And somehow out of that night Dex came up with "Gone Away".
I always liked the Offspring, but firing your band mate of almost 15 years because he didn't take the vax isn't punk, it's a way of saying "Please govern me harder daddy!" Goes to show that punks these days are just modern fascists. All respect lost ✌️
Finding out about these dudes personal histories and lves made me like them 4-times more. That can be true of many people, but for me and Offspring, it really got me into the intent of the songs and respect for understanding humans that they could portray. Some bands it's just catchy music, these guys had stories, even funny ones.
5:47 I wish you would relate the subject of this song, maybe even vaguely... I attribute it to my mother's suicide. Of which I feel responsible. That's on me.
I was a big fan of them, specially of the first 3 records. Got a listen to the 4th of 5th again and noticed an unfortunate change. Where the first 3 are real political punk (even anarchists) they turned conservative weirdos on the others , bashing poors and trans people. They never answered why. Hope they changed (back).

Effing love that song so i effing love your story. 🏆 you win.
The Kids Aren't Alright & Gone Away are their very best songs!!
And still very touching and relevant to this day.
The kids aren't alright was such an emotional song that had both perfect rifts and lyrics. Very powerful song.
famously high pitched singer. during the interview: low ass voice. hahaha love it!

@@joolsmacgrools1288 I have great voice for text comments and great face for a radio
Kids arent allright is the one of the all time best music videos ever !
The Self Esteem video has a definite Teen Spirit vibe.
Except the song is drastically better.
Ah yes the Offspring. The comply or die punk band
Kids aren't vaccined, the next hit

Great band. Let's not forget their cameo in Idle Hands
They look like a lesbian couple that just got out of their Subaru outback.
No one: "That drummer should have put a shirt on"
The punk band: "My God, put a shirt on"
Gone Away, it's one of the best in my opinion, still touches me 😔

Gone away is the best song they ever made it's amazing.
That's probably the first time they've acknowledged Ron publicly in over 2 decades

😂

“Defy You” is definitely the best Offspring song. It’s actually the only one that doesn’t make me change the channel.
Dexter watching the videos with focus. He misses that vocal range he had. Love the offspring!

yall needed to show them "cool to hate" that music video was ridiculous haha
Met Dexter at a concert in a small bar in Iowa SuperToad.
I was probably 12 and just star struck and only could ask for a autograph😂
That's awesome you got to see them there. I never got to go to any shows at SuperToad. I did see The Offspring when they headlined Lazerfest 10 years ago.
@sk8rsteve2004 I was at the one too😁
God I miss Super Toad. And Toad Hollar

It was those two and and Hairy Mairys back then.
I definitely miss the old days

I didn't know the song Gone Away, thanks for introducing it.
It's a banger

Interested they pointed out former drummer Ron Welty on the Gone Away music video.

Bought the tickets to the gig in my town in October 😊
See you in Milan in september.

You mean the molecular biologist with the PhD and understood the science behind the vaccine wanted people to be safe and not die. What a terrible thing.
This is a very Interesting, cool interview! I wish I had more time to watch it until the very end though...
They have such a strong catalogue, their live set could really be so much stronger, rather than just playing their main singles.
Right? It's crazy that they wrote all those awesome deep cuts on earlier records and yet never play them live. I get that some tracks don't work as well as others live, or aren't as easy to sing/dance to at a concert but...never? C'mooooooooon guys!
I remember their greatest hits released in 2005 I think, in the dvd thei done something similar reacting and talking about their videos, pretty cool
Seeing Dexter silently signing "Gone Away" kicks me hard
Gone Away is their best song IMO, I hope they'll play it more live.
Gone away still brings a tear to my eye first I think about my dad and then my boy Sean that took his own and it just gets me and I’m 40
I still have no clue how Dexter sings so high.
This band has so many amazing songs. You would need an hours long video.
So down to earth, no weird "larger than life" rockstar vibes. Respect.
