  • Teenagehood can be a particularly challenging time for many families. Conflicts can arise that seriously affect the dynamics and functioning of the family and its individual members. In this video, I discuss some tools I've found helpful in engaging families.

Hola Meyleen, thank you for your very informative video! I am at the end of my Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and have decided to specialize in working with children and adolescents. The biggest struggle I am having right now is knowing when to involve parents. I made the mistake of working with just the teens (they are around 13-14), and now that I have seen them for a couple of months, I've noticed parents are just dropping off kids and waiting in the car. I want to involve parents more but don't know how. Any tips around this would be great or a video about when to involve parents!! :)

Hola Angeles, I try to meet with caregivers alone for the initial appointment and then set a plan to meet as a family once a month. Depending on the concern we are working on, I've held check-in and check-out family talks at each session.
