- Max Payne is a third-person shooter action game series. It has thus far only spanned three games, all released across separate platforms (including the first game being released on the GameBoy Advance and mobile platforms. But across its three releases, the games consistently reviewed well, with the commercial performance seeing variance.
Yet despite this variance in sales, the franchise 7.5 million in sales to its name - a figure that many releases only hope to see. It's been a few years since the last release in 2012, and no word of a sequel since then. Let's find out what the hell happened to Max Payne, this otherwise successful, stylish, and cool-looking noir adventure series.

It can sometimes reuse the same assets or use different ones, and can sometimes be left unchanged with only better graphics and performance or be completely different experiences. Good examples of remakes are _Bully: Scholarship Edition_ and _Anniversary Edition_ , both _Halo Anniversary_ games, _Resident Evil REmake_ and _Resident Evil 2 REmake_ . A remaster upscales the game to perform better on different systems and is mostly left unchanged. Good examples of remasters include _Burnout Paradise Remastered_ , _Red Faction: Guerilla Re-mars-tered_ , _Medal Of Honor: Frontline_ on the PS3, and _GTA: San Andreas_ on mobile, PS3, and Xbox 360.

HONEY_BADGER_ 1911 nah! Thought it was shit. The only one I rated was the Remedy's Max Payne. The first one was the only game in the series to have a good story. The sequels milked the series and just improved on the graphics. Max Payne 3 is just a glorified shooting gallery. The 1st one changed things up with its nightmare sequences and had a strong story with top notch narration. The game still holds up even though the graphics are dated because of the way the story was told.

To be fair, Max Payne 3 had a pretty good conclusion to the story. He finally showed mercy to the bad guy and didn’t kill him out of anger for revenge

The PC version is the definitive version, just play that. Not sure why anyone would want to play a Max Payne game sub 60 fps and with a controller.

I really, really enjoyed max Payne 3. It was different but I still felt it was loyal to Max's character. Plus the combat still holds up today.
I could agree with that if it weren't for that boss battle where you automatically die if you leave the boss area - the one at the airport where you hide behind the suitcases.

I just started to play max Payne 3 a couple days ago and still amazes me how good it looks. The only thing I don't like it's the unskipable cutscenes.

The cut scenes are actually the loading screens in the game. One of the first games to ever do it

The first thing that comes to mind with max payne, is the airport shoot out with the epic soundtrack. I think its a worthy chapter to close this amazing series. Max has suffered so much, he deserve a rest.
Reza Vai Treznor bro the airport mission was soo badass. I remember when the badass music started playing while I shot at the enemies it made feel like the shit and games that make you feel a certain type of way are rare!

Max is a character many can relate with. Even in dire situations with no positive outcome, he just wing it with no hesitation.

Terrible story in comparsion to the first 2. He's just a drunk holiday rep with a gun in 3. Yes the combat was great and the multiplayer was decent but it's the worse in the series imo

3 was favorite as well. He went through some shit and collapsed inside a bottle trying to hide from a fucked up past. I think it's a bit of a redemption story.

Do you really want the max payne cow gets milked until shes dead? The existing trilogy is good and theres a nice finish to the story.i like storys without a happy end. Here is the solution: they should make a remake of max Payne 1 and/or 2 with more details about his life fighting crime as a NYPD detective to give us more details or a better picture of his past.

Please people stop expecting games from Rockstar at yearly basis. Current gaming technology requires alot of time to perfect the game. And for the perfectionists like Rockstar Games, they can't just release half product unlike other companies.
You will get Bully 2, GTA 6, Max Payne 4, Midnight Club 5, Manhunt 3. But you have to wait. or even AGENT ,who knows?

They have multiple teams working on multiple games. It is very much possible that they release 2quality games inside 2 years. Just not yet.
Midnight Club 5 was cancelled in 2010. Manhunt 2 did bad in sales and reception, so a sequel is unlikely. Max Payne's story ended. The only possible games are Bully 2 and GTA 6, or a new IP(which I want). Agent also seems kind of impossible.

The Max Payne trilogy is my favorite series of games ever made, with the 3rd being my favorite game of all time. I make it a habit of playing them all over again every year. So for me personally, I don't think the series should return and that's because Max Payne 3 ended the story in the best way possible for the character. It would feel ridiculous if Max were to go through the same thing over again, just let the man rest, his story is over for fucks sake. I'd love to see HD Remakes of the first two games for the PC and modern systems, hell even a remaster of MP3, but that's just about the only extent I'd ever want to see Max suffer again.
I'd love to see Max again, I have a personal attachment to the character, but not every series needs to continue. I'd rather the trilogy end here than come back and lose what made these games special.

Max Payne 3 was easily one of my favorite games of the last generation. I'll be more than happy with just remastered version. I would not be surprised if we get a refresher on the series now though.

I really enjoyed the Max Payne series. I loved Max Payne 3, that game was excellent. It`s just too bad it didn`t sell well enough for a part 4.
Max Payne 3 is probably the best 3rd person shooter ever made. That game was way ahead of it's time regarding graphics and it was actually maybe the first game to not have loading screens just like god of war 4. Just insane. Love you Max.
I'd be up for a HD collection, but not another one. I really enjoyed how 3 ended and doesn't need to continue maxs story.
I think it would be real fun for Max Payne 4 to take Max across Europe and the U.K., rather than just being solely based within the American continent.

@@nicholassnyder2241 5out of 10 is more precise to reality. Good gameplay and killer soundtrack. But story, location and characterization of Max was absolute trash. The character of Max was completely butchered he went from a sarcastic wise ass to a miserable, mopey drunk. I hated what they did to Max so much I dropped the game somewhere around 80-85% in.

The gameplay was ok and the mechanics were obviously better, but the only part I really liked was his flashback in New Jersey. It brought back memories of the first two and still had that noir feel.
@@cun7us And it's funny since the first two games were equally action-driven and storytelling perfectly. Of course the settings are different, and my favoritism will always lean towards the first game, but in that regard the two games are not different. Perfectly engineered and written.
Max Payne 3 was easily the best. The grittiness and the authentic Brazilian dialect had me feeling like a gringo. WTF are they talking about? Turn the difficulty to the max and go to work with my mouse and KB. The music wasn't too shabby either. Airport level anyone?

Clarence Tuurngait what's your problem with people liking a game? I have all three Max Payne games and I love all three equally. Yeah there are nitpicks in Max Payne 3 but what game doesn't have nitpicks. My advise to you don't assume shit and don't get all jumped up because people liked a game you didn't.

Max Payne 3 was massive underrated game of the last decade. Online was really fun as well, kinda added a story mode with online play.

I would love a Max Payne prequel. Younger Max scootin around rooftops and scary alleys of seedy neighborhoods in early 90s NYC. Throw in some insanely gorgeous wealthy mobster homes and high-rise office buildings with even more unbelievably opulent interiors than the original. Include toys rich assholes have. Make it all more destructible.
If Remedy didn't sell the rights to Rockstar maybe we had a better Max.

No, I remember many R* games other than Red dead, gta and max payne-midnight club(this series is dead and will never continue because the midnightclub team left R* games, and midnightclub 5 was cancelled in 2010), manhunt( manhunt 2 suffered badly, both with reception and with sales, that's why it is not having any future game) and Bully(I think Bully 2 is in production). Other than these franchises, Rockstar doesn't have any games developed.

@@nofxceghxst9192 no. Actually Bully, Max Payne and midnightclub-all franchises sold an average of about 4 million. That is, they sold well. But not as well as red dead or gta. At an average, gta sold 20 million, and red dead sold 10 million(even if Red Dead revolver wasn't that great sold). And 4 million sold by a single game means it is good. But gta and red dead have sold drastically more than them. And Bully 2 is in production I think-because of leaks. And also, Bully midnightclub and max payne sold 4 million as an average means it's good because if you take Assassin's Creed total sales and total games an then find an average, you will find that that franchise also sold about 4 million at an average.
Please no more sequels from the Houser hacks, they can write decent stuff for open world games but Max Payne 3 is sometimes just painful.

If there were to be a Max Payne: 4, it would have to be a prequel. Max got his sunset ending in the third game of the trilogy, though the promotional comic that came before the game's release explored backstory and events prior to even the first game. He was a great cop back in the day, so you could just have the plot be centered around the cases that ended up on his desk and bring back old faces from previous games that tie into a larger conspiracy. That's the L.A. Noire route, but the series is supposed to resemble something from that genre.
If not a detective for the NYPD, have him in uniform stumbling into situations that go from bad to worse. Like a domestic violence call escalating into gang warfare, a search warrant leading a Die Hard III styled mad dash to disarm explosive devices planted around the city, or him transporting a high-value criminal and having every goon trying to spring said criminal for a huge monetary reward like the plot of S.W.A.T. Someone just doesn't like him for being too upstanding as a police officer and puts a hit on him, kind of like the end level of Urban Chaos: Riot Response.
If not either of these, set the fourth game's events to lead into the events of the first game, when he, Alex, and BB are working to crack the Valkyr case. The game ends after one bloody conflict too many forces him to consider what he has to lose, his wife and daughter, and he starts to take things easy. End it with him quitting smoking, "For the baby," and driving home to his house to discover the addicts attacking and murdering his family. Either way, unless you're pulling a Death Wish: 5, you can't put Max into the shit after dropping him off in sunset-soaked Bahia, with a duffel bag, colorful attire, and a beer on the beach.
I see no reason why they couldn't sell another max Payne. Perfect fun formula for an action game.
The problem with another Max Payne game is that Max starts the same, goes the same and ends the same. Though I'd still love another Max Payne game, an ending to his whole story. To know he just doesn't walk away into the sunset

Another Max Payne game would not work. The character had been put through so much violence and trauma that another story would be ridiculous.
The reason I love playing Red Dead Redemption 2 is the Max Payne mechanics they have.

The first two were developed by Remedy, who combined their amazing noir graphic novel-esque gritty storytelling, with amazing gameplay
The third game was developed by Rockstar who promptly threw all that style right out the window, but turned Max into a depressed alcoholic - choosing only to actually improve the gameplay.
Thankfully Rockstar has been too busy with GTAO to ruin the series further.
Online Max Payne 3 was amazing.
We probably won't see a Max Payne 4. Max's story is finished, he killed everyone who crossed him and he walked off to the sunset to live the rest of his days in peace. What I would love to see though is a remake of Max Payne 1 & 2 just like how they remade Crash Bandicoot. That would be something I think many of us would pay for and be excited for it as if it was a sequel.

Leave Max alone. 3 gave the most satisfying conclusion. I don't want Max Payne to turn into an elderly John McClane character just to milk the money.

What happened is Remedy sold the rights to Rockstar. Remedy moved onto other unique IPs while Rockstar respectively takes forever to make sequels. There will be a Max Payne 4 in the immediate future.
