To many of us, Natalie was already back then the renowned american treasure she would later become known as. Her integrity has remained intact as a songwriter, and her beautiful voice is singular & unlike any other.

She never wanted to be the queen, or commercial spokesperson, or just keep trotting out the same stuff every two or three years. Just Natalie singing meaningful songs. I do wish today's female singers would cover her and the Maniacs more.

She has been my benchmark of time. It all goes by too fast but Natalie has made my life more beautiful from childhood into middle age. When I see her current interviews, she is still stunningly beautiful and articulate, just as she was in the 1980's.

@@jamesdemichele3649 you might be right. But, at least in the early days, that band rocked. Her lyrics/vocals were mostly irrelevant in a live show. She was an alternative/artsy pop singer in a post-punk band. I’m rambling lol

10k maniacs were first wave american indie-alternative pioneers, self releasing their first records before signing to a major label. Natalie was always more talented than you'd expect as the band always won over any lucky new listener with their great songs.

I've talked to countless people in Jamestown and I've never heard one talk like Natalie. You're right, it's an affectation that's intended to give her an exotic sound that stands out from the hicks and rubes back home. I've personally witnessed others do the same thing on a situational basis. In a broader sense, think of the laughable way Madonna tried to adopt an English accent at one point in her life. What a laugh!
