Great movie! i saw this in theaters when i was turning 13 with my best friend and his family in Albuquerque and we dug it as i grew up with Goofy cartoons in the late 80s and early 90s as a kid and Goof Troop.
I even bought this on VHS first date and have this on blu-ray as i had it on DVD then replaced it with blu. And i had the hots for Roxanne and that blonde known as Lisa during my puberty, LOL.

I also think this is the perfect father and son movie, a fair and grounded relationship lesson on growing up and keeping your relationship with your father.

For the longest time, this 1995 movie didn't have a Blu-ray release until April 23, 2019.

One my favorite animated movies when I was a kid. Really fun flick that is entertaining throughout while also being quite sweet and emotional/heartfelt at times. Honestly, for an animated film I think it was really ahead of its time.

And of course, another thing that adds to Goofy's endurance is Bill Farmer's voicework as the character. Bill Farmer does a great job as the voice of Goofy. Bill Farmer is one of those voice actors that understands how good voice acting works.
I once watched an interview with him, and in that interview, he talked about how voice acting isn't just about doing funny voices. Voice Acting, is very much like regular acting. If you're going to voice a character in a cartoon, you have to understand the character. You have to think like the character, you have to be the character, you have to know where the character is coming from. And when Bill plays Goofy, he thinks of him as being simple, but still honest, and a good soul. And he really captures those qualities in his voicework.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid and enjoying it very much considering that it's what got me interested in watching those old Disney cartoons with Mickey Donald and Goofy. And i agree with you that Pauly Shore's performance in this movie is one of his most tolerable performances compared to his performances in Bio-Dome or Casper A Spirited Beginning. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the scene where Max is singing that song at the school auditorium to impress his girlfriend and the part where Goofy and Max encounter Bigfoot when they go fishing.

@RamboRalph I was holding my breath for this review. Glad it was a good one lol. I loved this movie as a kid in the 90s. I didn't know they had a sequel.

The only things they use the classic Disney shorts characters for is CGI animated series aimed at little kids or the shorts where they're drawn in a Ren and Stimpy style.

I do quite enjoy Goofy as a character. Especially as a Dad character. When you watch stuff like this or Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, it seems like there's actual care, actual thought, of: "Hey, at the end of the day, we have to show that Goofy actually does care about his son."
Goofy is very much like early Homer Simpson, where... he's a Dad, but he tries his best, and yeah, sure, he's dumb, but... there's a limit to his stupidity. Goofy genuinely cares about what his son thinks of him, and so because of that, there's a little bit of an emotional crutch to some of these movies and specials that focus on Goofy and Max. Because Goofy wants to do the best for his kid, and he wishes that Max would respect him as a Dad. And he would never say things to Max like: "One of the dreams of a parent is that he'll outlive his kids.", or put Max in a dangerous situation just to try and save his own life, and when Max asks him why he's willing to sacrifice him like this, Goofy goes: "You'll understand when you have kids." No, Goofy never does stuff like that. They've never made Goofy into a jerk.
I think Goofy is very easily one of the best cartoon fathers. In fact, he's my favorite cartoon father, honestly. And movies like this really showcase why, because in this film, you see him actually trying to make an actual connection with his son, even if he's not quite succeeding at it. But that's what makes him so enduring, is the fact that he is trying, he just doesn't quite have a grasp on his son's interests/wants/desires.

A very fine job on the review for a film I never got around to seeing maybe I'll watch it in a double feature with the sequel?

One of my favorite childhood favorites from back in the day and one of my favorite Disney animated films of all time. I love this film and I really do love Pauly Shore in this and his voice and his character. He was funny as hell. I also really enjoy the sequel. I’ve always considered it to be one of the better direct to video Disney sequels. Good review

I should request the sequel later when you're not busy, I used to think it was inferior, but over the years its a great movie. I agree that Disney should go back to their original characters more often, I don't get why they don't, everyone loves Mickey, Donald and Goofy for the most part. Paul Ruddish did the successful 2013 Mickey Mouse cartoon series which is still on today. Disney successfully rebooted Duck Tales and established its own universe with Goof Troop, Chip and Dale and Darkwing Duck being in that universe

This is during a weird time for Disney around 1995 the entire Disney Afternoon block became stale (I think this movie was meant to be a part of the final Goof Trop season) or at least bookend the series I remember seeing this film in the theatre a childhood friend was working in a theatre at the time (for a good 2years straight i was able to see a lot of Hollywood big budget films for free) just had to find my way to the theatre.... As a stand alone film its pretty strong but, also having tons of call backs to the tv show it’s a shame that the entire Disney Afternoon back catalog is looked down upon by Disney (Disney was dying in 1985-1986 every theatrical film was a massive bomb) DuckTales and the Disney afternoon actually helped them a lot... I wish the film was given a proper collectors edition dvd/blu-ray but, Disney is very strange they don’t even respect there past..... Only Past properties they bought over the last 20yrs.

Ebert gave it 3 stars out of 4. Seems like a pleasant time waster.
