Built three great sides. The first from the wreckage of the Second World War, a bombed ground and no money. The second from the most advanced youth system ever developed in English football, the third from the wreckage of the air crash to win the European Cup. What a man.
Matt Busby “made” Manchester United. Although the club existed as far back as Newton Heath in 1878 and than as Manchester United in 1902 it was his persona that defined the club, making it the most famous, entertaining and romantic football club in the world.
One of my few regrets in life is not getting to meet Sir Matt before he passed as i was supposed to. He was meant to officially open my school (Stretford High School) on 14th Feb 1992. Unfortunately, he was too ill to attend so Alex Ferguson came instead. Working for the school newspaper, we were allowed an exclusive interview which will live with me forever. As an 11 yr old, it was the biggest moment of my life. As it happens, i went on to meet and work around Sir Alex Ferguson many times in the future, which, as amazing as it was, leaves me with a sense of regret that Sir Matt couldnt make it that day. I would have loved the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for building such a great club from rubble. Rest in peace Sir Matt. ❤
As an old blue nose I found this interview fascinating, had the pleasure of meeting this great man in 1978 on holiday in Largs Scotland. And he spent 20 minutes with me about his love of Manchester folk and how he was respected by all sides and had only kind words for everybody. The man was a genius and a gentleman.
I've been a season ticket holder at OT for so many years....but I always look up to the statue of the father of the club. If he's here, haunting the old place that he and Jimmy Murphy built? We'll be all right.
He recommended bill Shankly to Liverpool when he initially wanted Bill Shankly to succeed him and afterwards he said he might love to regret that recommendation
Football Videos, Thanks for this insightful interview with Sir Matt. Great achievements when you consider he built a club from scratch and had to contend with almost losing his life and an awful personal tragedy.
Possibly, yes: - Reconstructed the team after the war.: champions. - Reconstructed the team after Carey and Rowley: Busby babes (champions, European Cup contenders). - Reconstructed the team after Munich: Champions of Europe (Best, Law and Charlton). Charisma, intelligence, character, wisdom, all in abundance. He’s basically the most important person in Manchester United.
Christian Rayner. what to don't know is this ...when Busby took over at Man Utd not only did he not have a team (just after the war) but Man U had no stadium or pitch as it had been bombed to pieces. therefore for the next few seasons Man U played all their home matches at Maine Road..in 1948 they won the FA Cup..also if not for Munich Man U could have won at least 4 more league titles ...3 FA Cups and with the side they had would certainly have dethroned Real Madrid as European Champions .
