I grew up being huge fan of 2PAC, NAS, JAY Z - now 38 years later i am absolute fan of this guys BTS. They all are insanely talented and very much masters in music making. The rappers are top tier, lyrically nobody can touch them, flows are insane too. They are no joke, check CHYPHERS, 1,2 ,3 ,4 ..Also TEAR - live version at Wembley (that is a must)

Since you said you like hip hop just know BTS LOVES HIP HOP AND ARE HIP HOP INFLUENCED. Check out their song "Hip Hop Lover/phile" where they pay homage to their artistic influnces. Also back in 2013 during their debut, they made an adaptation of JColes "Born Sinner" and named it "BORN SINGER". 9 Years later, they are more famous than ever and for their anniversay/anthology album, with the permission of JCole, they put it as the first track of the album. There's color coded lyric videos available on youtube and live performances as well

There's also the live version of Born Singer' they did more recently. I think they did it in the USA.
I bought into thinking BTS was bubblegum for a while, and honestly some of their English only songs don't really speak to me...but when I started to really dig in, they have so many meaningful, powerful tracks. I love On. If the lyrics speak to you I would recommend checking out the album Map of the Soul 7. On is a track there...and the concept was based off of psychologist Carl Jung's work of mapping the soul, understanding your persona (outer), ego (inner), your shadows (buried) to really grow and understand and ultimately love yourself. The rapline all have solo tracks on there...RM = Intro Persona, Suga = Interlude Shadow, J-Hope = Outro Ego...there's also Black Swan which explores the idea of an artist's first death when you start to fall out of love with making your art. Them exploring and growing has been a big part of their journey as artists, I would recommended giving Idol a reaction as well. It's not quite a dis track, but was their response to the hate they received and still received...being dismissed, looked down on an "Idol" band, and actually being told they weren't Korean enough...it's loaded with Korean traditional sounds, but also includes a South African beat and Gwara Gwara dance moves...the MV is insane but it's supposed to be over-the-top as sarcasm.

They open with Born Singer which is an homage to J Cole's Born Sinner. (When they say "3 years ago" they actually mean more like 10 or 11 because it's one of their older songs).

They have over 300 songs over the last 10 years, so yes it's a lot to get through.
I'm 58 and grew up with the same US hiphop, rappers (some a bit earlier than Biggie) and UK punk. These boys rank up there for me. The lyricism is as poetic as any great rapper. The music genre-bends and the message is connected and healing across all their discography. It's the same message as any of those early artists (the early stuff is all about 'what's your dream?' Don't have one? Fucking find one then and work hard to achieve it like we have, 'cos we deserve everything we have, we love ourselves and you should love yourself too). I really never thought I would ever feel the same passion for someone's music as I did back then but BTS is something special. If many people got out of their musical comfort zone (ie the stuff they listened to when they were tweens), they would have so much fun with these guys. Just to add, for an old rap fan like me, these guys can RAAAAAP - oh my god can they rap!!!!! (CYPHERS 1-4 LIVE ...JESUS/TEAR LIVE AT WEMBLY ....FU*****K! There are explanation vids for some of them because they are so fantastic but cos it's Korean we miss loads.💜💜💜 I'm really sorry that you experienced such pain, especially at such a young age. 💜💜💜

Many new fans and people that don't know BTS don't understand that when they first started they were more Hip Hop related. You should check out one of their first and earlier songs and videos. Their very first debut MV is No More Dreams and you can see they were more in that Hip Hop style and you should also check out Hip Hop Phile, where they actually mention the people who helped influence their style.

This was right at the beginning of the pandemic and they had to cancel their tour, were away for two years before they could perform this live. They can obviously dance, sing, rap. You noticed J-Hope with the first real change in flow with “bring the pain”, I pray in your discovery you get a chance to watch/react to any of J-Hope’s freestyle live videos called Hope On The Street-they are incredible and he does every street style-popping, krump, hip hop, house dance, freestyle. He has one that starts late at night where he dances for over an hour…that’s why his collab with J-Cole was him dancing underground while his hero was on the rooftop. He joins him up there at the end. I’m so glad you are here to share your thoughts and experience with us.
I'm sorry for your mother, I understand how difficult it must have been for you. Now I know why the number of ARMYs in the 40'50's range is so large, as we understand very well the messages embedded in the boys' songs, as many of us in At some point along this path, we've already been through this, and young people open their minds by listening to your music, preparing for the future. I'm 45, I grew up in the 90's and Pac,Biggie,Nas,Andre,Rakim.. all I listened to, this bts song was the one that put me on! Literally.. they are amazing! You should listen to their early albums! Very 90s hip hop vibes!! WELCOME ARMY!!

Hi Stryker. I'm a new subscriber. Your genuineness and positivity make your reactions fun to watch. Please don't let our enthusiasm for BTS overwhelm you. Of course we'll understand if you don't have time to respond to every comment or check out every song/video we suggest. And it's fine if you don't particularly like some of the songs - there is so much variety in their music, some will resonate with you more than others. And some of them will grow on you over time and appeal when you're in certain moods. We'll watch any reaction you want to make to BTS content - short, long, happy, sad, whatever. And most of us will also try out some of your reactions to other artists. One thing about BTS is that they all really love music and are constantly hyping up other artists, including people who aren't big names. Anyway, nice to 'meet' you!

Did you know that RM - The leader of BTS was an underground rapper before signing with Big Hit, and his biggest artistic influence is NAS. SUGA was also underground and the first album he ever bought was Eminem. They've had to go through some really tough times, and you can get their story by doing an introduction. They didn't have it easy starting with a label that had no influence in the music industry in South Korea, and they had little money to promote BTS. And the guys were really young - ages 15 to 20 when they debuted as a Hip Hop Idol group. I really hope you do the intro. because it will show you who they are as people as well as artists.

I grew up with 2Pac, Biggie, Mase, TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, Busta Rhymes and etc... too in the late 80's and during the 90's and my two fave boybands back in the day was Boys 2 Men and New Kids On The Block. When I found BTS it was a breath of fresh air for sure. I found them 5 years ago and never turned back. They are so versatile and speak to basically everyone. BTS has helped me through some extremely hard times and I couldn't thank them enough. You mentioned you use to march, I did as well throughout Junior High and High School up here in Canada. Hi, I'm ARMY-UK, they started out as a hip hop group. 3 rappers, 4 vocalists. You definitely should check out any rap-heavy ones of theirs (they have 4 cyphers), "Ddaeng", "Ugh", "Run BTS" (you'd need to do lyric vids first for the rap songs, then MVs or lives after) - a lot of reactors do both in the same reaction. Don't be put off by their more "pop" sounding songs - their lyrics are deep/meaningful and they cover all genres.

They grew up on that too. American rap and hip hop are their inspiration. A lot of people cry cultural appropriation, but South Korea exists because of the US. It is only natural that they would love and adopt things from the U.S.

I'm a white, female, over-the-hill hippy and long time music lover (I found out late in life that Hip Hop and a Hip Hop beat is the music of my soul...my body just has a natural understanding of that wonderful beat, but that's beside the point) and lover of BTS. Being retired I spend my days watching a BTS reactors. Please keep reacting to them.
Every member is broadly talented .. they have an enormous body of music dating back to about 2010 when they debuted. Such an amazing group of talented guys... you need to watch Jimin's (just dropped) Set Me Free, Pt. 2.. it is a wow... His solo album is coming next week and if you like this music... you likely will love the album... Set Me Free is nothing like what Jimin has ever done!

Just in case no one has answered your question. The guy you notice is RM or Namjoon Kim (In South Korea they usually put the surname first - Kim Namjoon).
RM is the leader of BTS and the main songwriter/lyricist/rapper of the group.
BTS debuted in 2013 and are currently focusing on their solo careers while Members go through their mandatory military service. Kim (Seok Jin)/Jin and just recently Jung (Hoseok)/J-Hope have enlisted at this time.
BTS (and the 7 individuals themselves) cover and mix pretty much every genre, but their roots are Hip-Hop.
If Rap/Hip-Hop are your thing, then early BTS (2013-2014) will probably be up your alley, as well as Rapline (RM, Suga, J-Hope) songs.
You may appreciate Hip-Hop Phile/ Hip-Hop Lover and born singer.
Run BTS (the song) is also pretty hype.
BTS tends to find people when they need them.
BTS fandom = ARMY and we can be intense, but the majority of us are well-meaning.

Their solo work is worth checking out. They are all individually just as great and successful as a solo artist as they are as a group; that's why there will never be another group like them...my opinion. Enjoyed your reaction!
I'm sorry for your loss. I knew the feeling. I lost my mom in 2018 and my dad in 2019. I love this song because it gives me strength and confidence to go on. Thanks for such a heart felt genuine reaction. You are just scratching the surface of BTS. You grew up listening to some of the best rappers in the game as did the rappers in BTS. Their rap line is no joke. Suga, JHope, and RM are the rappers. Rm's Joke, Suga's Daechwita, and JHope's Bass line are a few of their solo rap songs. But then there is, Ugh, Daeng, and the Cyphers 1-4 which is just the BTS rap line. There is so much in their music catalog.
And all you named growing up listening to are some of their biggest inspirations.

I'm so glad you found them! Their music is especially healing. I'd like to suggest a couple of songs, ok more than a couple! Fire, Dope, and Danger (early song) and for something totally different Black Swan. They cover all genres, and amazingly at that. I'm 67 and have so much respect and admiration for them. I'm finally learning to love myself because of them, and that wasn't an easy thing to do!

I'm subscribing to watch your journey....there is a LOT to uncover and many different 'genres'.....given your music listening background, I am curious to see if you enjoy any of their other music. Based on what I've read, they have enjoyed the same music you did growing up....in fact, the leader, RM, has worked with Lil Nas, Wale, etc. Perhaps you would really benefit from learning the background of the members .... watch the Guide to the BTS Members by Taylor. Dang, you'll be so impressed!. I am an old lady, 65, and you had me laughing out loud at the memory of my sons and the 'cheat codes'...I'd forgotten all about them. Oh I had some awful times tearing those boys away from those games....they'd be in another world. Only other thing I remember is one game would mess up and they'd pull it out and blow on it to get it to work?! First impression of you as a reactor is that you've got a great 'radio' voice.
