hey Eric, I used a hair blow dryer to bend the plastic of the timing chain cover, to have access to the bolt for the valve cover.....worked also for bending back to original shape.....excellent video from you on the 2003 kia sorento....keep up the good work
I just did this , on the same car this last weekend. Tough job, I had to stop and watch this video several times bless you for taking the time to record this.
Bro you have NO idea how much time you saved me not having to remove All that to I get to that ONE bolt holding the passenger side valve cover.. thank you!!! 💯
I have one of these nightmares. It is flat out a nightmare what you have to remove just to change the plugs. The plug wires are another adventure. Hats off to tackle the jungle. I got a set of wire, coils and new iridium plugs on Amazon for $80.00 or so. All the plumbing and 10,000 miles of wire no one would own one of these if new what it takes to fix them.
I've been an auto/diesel tech for about 15 years and today is a first for working one. Idk why we only charged 5.9 hours, which includes an alignment. I have full access to AllData and Michelin, yet neither one gives any sort of information on valve cover gasket R&R. That being said, thank you bro. You're a life saver!
Appreciate the info bro most dudes show a drawing that's inaccurate. Not even the Haynes manual shows it's exact location. Do you think its possible to change without removing the manifold?
yes its possible, you can get a flex head small ratchet or a thin regular ratchet and sneak it out from the front of the manifold, it wont be easy but I have personally replaced it like this in the past
People who's make comments negative don't watch the video if them gonna talk about it ! Why you didn't change that ! Go with the mechanic and pay the bill, You should be appreciated for it he's doing a very excellent job helping people . and thank you friend for make those videos 👍 up
Super great job Eric, your talent is in high demand, I was going to do this myself on my Kia Sorento but I feel I would lose the patience for all the wiring but glad to see these are one of the videos to watch when buying a car, Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks for the video! I’m working on my friend’s 2003 Sorrento w/ 185k miles. For its age and mileage I think this car is quite solid and reliable! Just a small head gasket leak but nothing major
Only remove plenum if changing valve cover gaskets! You can reach the screws for the coil covers and remove spark plugs and coils with plenum in place.
Found your 2nd part! Holy sheet.. no wonder colleagues said ditch the Sorento after hearing I have a crank with no start. WTF was Kia thinking burying the plugs this deep.
Awesome video!.. At first I though you were removing too many parts. But after getting onto it. There is no way without removing all the windshield wipers motor and all those parts, to be able to work.. Great video, Thanks!
i have to do this job next week. i already did the timing belt and if i knew the troubles to changing out spark plugs i would of did that when i did timing chain as you have to take the whole front plate/bracket off the front just to get that timing cover off, what a racket huh lol. i may just do what you did with the timing cover but i think ill cut the plastic piece out nice then just rtv it back in nicely.tks for this video, nice job.
Another Awesome for Eric! On that small radiator hose connection.....yes, I broke it at the radiator & only a tiny portion of radiator plastic was left. However, using a tiny metal dowel about 1 inch long with JB Weld I was able to make a secure connection. Insert the dowel halfway into where the plastic tit used to be & the other half into the hose. Apply JB liberally, allow to set 24 hours before starting motor. Check for leaks before going to Alaska.
ERICSDIYGARAGE .....Eric, I kinda figured you would break that tiny plastic radiator tit. I watched the way you were manhandling that hose! LOL! P.S. I lied. Mine leaks a little bit too but after a month, I've yet to add any liquid. Great video! Audio & lighting were excellent. Most people have No Idea the work that goes into something like that. Now, do one on how to put it all back together! LOL...again!
I didn't break it in this video but I did break it when I installed the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, I learned from the mistake now lol, i ended up replacing mines since it would still leak but I know it can work. In part 3 I show you how to put it back together. Its hard work,it took me 3 days to film it.
ERICSDIYGARAGE .....Three days? I'm surprised it didn't take you three weeks! What got my attention & appreciation was the effort that went into getting the good (and important) close-ups of the stuff on the back end & down the sides especially....not to mention the lighting where a viewer could actually SEE what you were doing. Lots of these tech help videos could take lessons from you Eric. Don't pay attention to the dumb asses that gave you a few thumbs down. There's always some jerk in the werks! I'd say jealousy is the number one reason. I'm subscribing now so once I tear it down I'll know how to put it together! Many Thanks!
Excellent, very informative video. I wish I would have watched this prior to working on my 2005 Kia Sorento. While I was trying to remove the overflow hose from the radiator I ended up breaking the nipple on the radiator... Now I get to replace the radiator...
Donald Wilson thank you I appreciate it! I understand your pain I also broke the nipple when I changed the thermostat. I think you can get a radiator with a metal nipple.
Was dead ass about to burn this pos to the ground if I had to remove the whole front of the engine. For one bolt!!! Thank you so much for saving me a lawsuit 🙏🏾
About to go do this right now, had a fire from the valve cover gasket leaking an burnt the TPS sensor an a few other plugs get burnt as well gonna splice them in an change the gaskets. Parts should be here today.
Rather than make that hole, you can just remove the 4 bolts that hold the power steering pump. Once you do that, the plastic peace comes up enough to remove the bold. What I did was loosen the bolt and then with a magnet, took it out. Making sure no to drop it. I wil use the magnet to put it back...
You are exactly right. If you remove the power steering pump, then the 4 bolts holding the cover, you can lift the cover up and twist counter clockwise to expose the last bolt. Then use a magnet to extract. Just had to do this yesterday. Valve cover gaskets started leaking after 15 years. Gaskets were rock hard. Not complaining though. Hope the new gaskets last just as long.
Everyone should avoid to make that hole. Some body had made the hole in my car. So, one bolt from the engine cover fall through the hole, which result in a timing belt issue and consequently an engine repair.
Just had an an 05 where one or more of the plenum bolts is white oxide corrosion seized inside holes and felt like they would just twist and snap off inside.I used PB blaster and a air hammer with flat punch rattled on top of bolt head and kept working back and forth with liberal amounts of penetrant luckily got the bolt unscrewed and plenum off.
So the long bolts in the middle of the valve cover are on the passenger side? I took mine off m car and they were on the drivers side. Im guessing they did it wrong?
hey Eric, much thanks for making the effort to post this video. I need to replace the pcv valve on my 05 Sorento. It's in the same location as what you showed in this video. Here's my question: do I have to take the intake manifold off of the engine to change out the pcv valve? Or will removing the windshield wiper guard give me enough room? Thanks for your help.
Ryan Yates thank you for watching, i had a video showing you how to replace the pcv valve but i deleted it by accident, You do not need to remove the intake manifold or the wiper motor, i was able to sneak my hand behind the manifold and get the hose off of the pcv valve next you will need a to get creative with your tools i used a ratchet with different types of extensions also a deep socket, i dont remember the size of it could be a 14 or 17, if you dont have a deep socket you can try to use a wrench. If i get more questions on this i will remake the video showing you how to replace the pcv valve.
I have a 06 Kia Sorento and I need to know how to check the oil pump. It sounds like its not oiling the top end. I cant find any info on where its even located. Any help would be great?
Interesting coil setup. There's a type of coil that runs 2 spark plugs. But it looks like a coil over plug setup on one side with a lead from each coil going to the plugs on the other side. First time I have seen one like that. I opened up my 08 Australian built ford for the first time a few days ago. Its coil over plug but instead of straight down they're actually on like a 20 degree angle. But the back bit is level with the valve cover. What was strange was that they have no small bolt holding them on. They're just SITTING THERE with a plastic cover plate that covers the whole top of the valve cover to stop them falling out. And they have no beauty cover because that plate IS the final cover.
Great job buddy. I’m glad I found this before I started. I would have never known how much stuff to remove. Sucks about having to cut timing cover to get to bolt. Did you get any other ideas instead of cutting?
thank you for watching! you can remove the front timing cover bracket that holds the accessories but you have to remove the power steering pump, ac compressor coolant hose so its not worth the trouble. some people say you can move the cover without cutting but i did this job I did not see a way
HOLA, QUE GRANDIOSOS VIDEOS, MUCHAS GRACIAS, NUNCA DESCONECTÓ LAS MARIPOSAS DEL MÚLTIPLE DE ADMISIÓN? POR LA FALLA FRECUENTE DE QUE SE SOLTABAN LOS TORNILLOS Y ALETAS Y EL MOTOR SE DESTRUIA...
So i followed your steps start to finish, afte done i started the kia, and there is a loud fast tapping going on, wasnt doint it before i replaced the valve covers.. any idea??
Honestly I will replace the coolant lines that go on the back of the engine have a separate video showing you got to replace that as well here is the link th-cam.com/video/ckA6HTYwPKI/w-d-xo.html
A pro mechanic or smart owner will replace the PCV valve & all the rubber hoses that are covered up by the intake plenum [upper section of the intake]. Either buy new intake gaskets or buy an aerosol can of Copper Coat to coat the old intake plenum gaskets if you want to re-use them. www.amazon.com/401612-Copper-Coat-Aerosol-Wt/dp/B000M8NZ8E Changing spark plug wires is a PITA on this car. I'd change those at the same time, because the job is MUCH easier with the intake plenum and valve covers off.
Don't leave that hole in the top of the passenger side upper timing belt cover. Any hard object falling down there will destroy your timing components and possibly the top of the engine. Foolish to risk thousands of dollars of possible damage to save half an hour. Clean grease/oil etc. off the cover. Cut a piece of plastic off of a gallon milk jug or similar to create a patch. Cover that hole with your patch and RTV [silicone sealer]. Better to do as Steve Perrett mentioned and move the plastic cover forward. If you use your air ratchet, it really doesn't take long to get the power steering pump out of the way. The added space also makes it easier to re-install the valve cover & gasket without knocking the gasket out of place. Removing both upper timing belt covers reduces the chance of the gasket coming out of place during re-assembly. It also allows you to view the area behind your timing belt. Look to see if either of the camshaft oil seals are leaking. If they are, it will be MUCH easier to replace them with the valve covers already off. Hot oil from leaking seals will cause premature failure of the timing belt. ATF is not adequate to coat those spark plugs. Use anti seize. Those spark plug threads were making a loud squeaking noise as you removed the spark plugs, because they were dry. Spend the extra 3 minutes to coat the plug threads with anti seize. It could save you having seized spark plugs at the next plug change interval. ATF will not keep those plug threads free for 60,000 or more miles.
@markchidester6239 I am curious, can you point me to somewhere in a written document that actually states that NGK claims not to use anti-seize on their spark plug threads? I realized you have to be careful not to allow the anti-seize to get onto the porcelain section of the spark plug or you'll short it out.
I don't understand why a valve cove leaks when they're rubber or silicone rubber. They have no stress, just heat. Would it be possible to retighten the nuts and or recheck the torque making sure it's correct?
Nice instruction video. Much will you charge me to replace the valve cover gasket and spark plugs. I am okay with taking everything off but reinstall is a different thing. LOL
I have to this job soon. I plan to film my adventure.. I will.have to label things as I go. I don't know..but some of the top pieces ( ones like spark plug wires..) Taking pics as go and notes wouldn't be a bad 💡It is extremely important to stay focused..especilly newbies. Also very important to get anything that drops and right then..if not..well it could be bad.
Job only calls for 4 hours it's ridiculous it took me eight and I'm a Master Mechanic also I struggled getting that bolt cuz you can't break it when you're working at a shop but you can get it by prying timing cover up just to get the wrench in there then pull it out with a magnet
Hey I’m sure I know what’s wrong with my Kia Sorento 2005 It’s either the head gasket cracked cylinder head Or cracked block It’s leaking oil or some kind of liquid out the engine on both sides do you have any ideas what it would be ?
this is a 3 part series and shows you how to replace the valve cover gaskets. If you follow the videos it shouldn't be too hard maybe give yourself a few days to work on the vehicle and you will be fine.
Ya I’ve watched all 3 parts to take it apart an I’m pretty confident I can make it happend I appreciate you replying your videos are really helpful I’ve watched your heater hose video and the high pressure power steering videos they helped me a lot man I appreciate you taking time out your day to make the job easier thanks man
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE ok. still not sure, but hey, i am working on my 2005 sorento right now and there is oil coming out of the engine block where it fastens together. Would replacing the valve cover gasket fix that problem or is it a blown head gasket. I don't know how to tell the difference. the engine isn't over heating but pressure is building in the coolant system and shooting out coolant from the overflow when I drive. not sure what is happening
@@rbb7977 it's hard for me help without seeing what's wrong any way you can record where the oil is coming out of? you could have a bad head gasket or it could be somthing else. I recommend getting it inspected by a mechanic. the last thing you want to do it replace parts that are not causing your issue
mine has been leaking badly for several years after firestone botched this job and charged 500$. after watching this vid-I will just let it leak oil and add it as needed. no engine should be this hard to do routine service . pos mitshitbishi desighn. terrible engine! . previous owner took it to firestone instead of the dealer. dumb move
elahn tupai the car will need a timing belt soon but not at the moment, If you look on TH-cam you will be able to find a video of showing you how to Replace it, i forget the guys name but theres a good video showing you how to Replace it.
timming belt is WAY harder than this. do not attempt unless you have experience on this engine. its an 800$ job at dealer. but so much to go wrong if you mess up
they are actually reliable but its a pain to work on, if you are replacing the spark plugs all you need to do it remove the throttle body but for the valve cover gasket you need to remove everything on top
if the valve cover gasket is torqued in the wrong sequence it could crack ! take some advise from a A.S.E. master certified tech with 40 plus years experience .
You probably mean the valve cover itself. These bolts get torqued to roughly 10ft lb I find that very hard to believe. Not sure why you would be watching a repair video if your a master tech with 40 plus years
@@ERICSDIYGARAGEYOUR VIDIO CAME UP ON MY FEED, I WAS ONLY POINTING OUT THAT THE SERVICE MANUEL IS WRONG 😀 😀 YOU SHOULD INFORM YOUR VEWERS. OH ,THE TORQUE IS 5 TO 7 FT. LBS.
@@papatech1843I have found that with that O-ring type of seal, if you keep going around the bolts torquing little by little the seal will squeeze down much more evenly. I use a 1/4" drive screwdriver handle and go a little at a time. Takes a few laps around the torque sequence but works great. After the first lap, the first bolts tightened are loose again. Keep going until their not loose anymore. Hope I said that right.
i thought long and hard before buying one of these as this engine is a nitemare to work on as you can see. my valve cover gaskets are leaking now, let them leak, ths is a ridiculous
ERICS DIY GARAGE im under my car and see the intake leaking from the lower part of the manifold is the bottom part the only part i need to change or ahould i replace the whole thing.

KyBigGuns thanks you for your feedback it means a lot! i would say its like $400-$600 for this job.
firestone charged my brother 500$ for this job and it still leaks!
KyBigGuns 7 dislikes is for the people who did what he did only to have their car Motor to stop cranking after watching this video

mine leaks a small amount but very little it might be that i used a aftermarket replacement gasket instead of the original

NGK states not to use anti seize on their nickel plated plugs.
Don't know why..
@markchidester6239 I am curious, can you point me to somewhere in a written document that actually states that NGK claims not to use anti-seize on their spark plug threads? I realized you have to be careful not to allow the anti-seize to get onto the porcelain section of the spark plug or you'll short it out.
You are the man

+Josel g beciez thank you!
Is the top bolt just a nut? Is it same size as lower bolt?
Do you have a time stamp
I don't understand why a valve cove leaks when they're rubber or silicone rubber. They have no stress, just heat. Would it be possible to retighten the nuts and or recheck the torque making sure it's correct?
they become hard and brittle and no longer seal because of that. if you tighten them down more it will not fix the seals
good job thank you help me a lot
NOEISY1 thank you for watching i appreciate it!
Nice instruction video. Much will you charge me to replace the valve cover gasket and spark plugs. I am okay with taking everything off but reinstall is a different thing. LOL
unbolt power steering pump , and small bracket and the timing coves slides over just enough to expose the bolt and NO CUTTING NEEDED.
Thank you so much for watching here is part 3 th-cam.com/video/E__t92nVfmY/w-d-xo.html
Are you sure its 5ft lbs? On valve cover bolts
Bro. Thank you! My head gasket cracked and I'm going to fix it. How long did it take?
+David conway thank you i appreciate it! this job took me 3 days to film but 5-7 hours non stop.
I have to this job soon. I plan to film my adventure.. I will.have to
label things as I go. I don't know..but some of the top pieces ( ones like spark plug wires..) Taking pics as go and notes wouldn't be a bad 💡It is extremely important to stay
focused..especilly newbies.
Also very important to get anything that drops and right then..if not..well it could be bad.
This was 👍
What size is the spark plug socket
Job only calls for 4 hours it's ridiculous it took me eight and I'm a Master Mechanic also I struggled getting that bolt cuz you can't break it when you're working at a shop but you can get it by prying timing cover up just to get the wrench in there then pull it out with a magnet
I cut the timing cover plastic too while doing mine
Manual says use RTV on camshaft to head mounts. Fel-pro website says permadry gaskets need to be installed clean and dry?? So no RTV???
use RTV on the side that makes contact to head but use RTV in the inside of the valve cover
disculpen es gasolinero o petrolero 3.5 v6?
Hey I’m sure I know what’s wrong with my Kia Sorento 2005
It’s either the head gasket cracked cylinder head
Or cracked block
It’s leaking oil or some kind of liquid out the engine on both sides
do you have any ideas what it would be ?
maybe you have bad valve cover gaskets
You think so you think it would be easy to do it myself
this is a 3 part series and shows you how to replace the valve cover gaskets. If you follow the videos it shouldn't be too hard maybe give yourself a few days to work on the vehicle and you will be fine.
Ya I’ve watched all 3 parts to take it apart an I’m pretty confident I can make it happend I appreciate you replying your videos are really helpful I’ve watched your heater hose video and the high pressure power steering videos they helped me a lot man I appreciate you taking time out your day to make the job easier thanks man
no problem, Thank you for watching I appreciate your support! let me know if you need help when you tackle this job
PCV VALVE @ 24:00
Thank you!
Why didn't you replace PCV valve? Wouldn't a stuck valve cause the alve covers to leak?
I had already replaced the PCV Valve on this vehicle so it was not necessary thank you for your comment.
if you blow the head gasket, what is that in this video? Is it what the towel is covering?
the head gasket is below the cylinder head that I was working on.
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE ya. i have a video or a pic. how can i get it to you?
@@rbb7977 do you have a Instagram or Facebook
mine has been leaking badly for several years after firestone botched this job and charged 500$. after watching this vid-I will just let it leak oil and add it as needed. no engine should be this hard to do routine service . pos mitshitbishi desighn. terrible engine! . previous owner took it to firestone instead of the dealer. dumb move
I have to do injectors soon can I get a how to?
I would for you to do timing belt video , as I have the same car and it’s a costly job I take it the shop
elahn tupai the car will need a timing belt soon but not at the moment, If you look on TH-cam you will be able to find a video of showing you how to Replace it, i forget the guys name but theres a good video showing you how to Replace it.
timming belt is WAY harder than this. do not attempt unless you have experience on this engine. its an 800$ job at dealer. but so much to go wrong if you mess up
Torque specs for the valve covers?
How many hours did the whole job take you?
+Joey Silva it look me 3 days because I didn't record when it was dark I would say if I were to do it again maybe 5 hours.
All this work and you did not replace the spark plug wires?
spark plugs wires were replaced in another video, thank you for watching
great.
funny though, mine is leaking exactly there
btw, how comes you don't swear?
Took me 4 to 6 hours I think I getting too old fun for a kid !
I put it all together and I am getting coolant in my exhaust what did I do wrong
+Charles Dillow is smoke coming out of exhaust?
sorry sir ! i beg to differ ! you are giving the disassembly sequence for installation torque sequence as the service manuel is wrong .
It doesnt really matter its on a vavle cover not as important as a flywheel or a head bolt
At what time does he show the PCV valve?
24:00
Im gonna try to do it in less than 2 hours.
Kalleb Lozano good luck
Thankx.
I work dismantling cars. Its nothing different from wut i do. Only this time i cant break anything..lol
All that for 6 spark plugs! Fuck that dude I'm trading the Kia
they are actually reliable but its a pain to work on, if you are replacing the spark plugs all you need to do it remove the throttle body but for the valve cover gasket you need to remove everything on top
Where is the 3rd cylinder on this car exactly?
if the valve cover gasket is torqued in the wrong sequence it could crack ! take some advise from a A.S.E. master certified tech with 40 plus years experience .
Estoy armando uno motor de esos pero no me arranca
You don’t have to take off the valve covers to change the spark plugs
read the title of the video
LOL! Dumb ass can't read. To busy rushing through the video trying to find something to critique you about.
i thought long and hard before buying one of these as this engine is a nitemare to work on as you can see. my valve cover gaskets are leaking now, let them leak, ths is a ridiculous
if its it leaking a lot of oil i wouldn't bother with it, its too much work lol
Los arbol de levas llevan lado
how do i replace the intake manifold. i have a 04 kia sorento
+Keli Durbin pretty much the same as what is shown in the videos.
ERICS DIY GARAGE im under my car and see the intake leaking from the lower part of the manifold is the bottom part the only part i need to change or ahould i replace the whole thing.
+Keli Durbin the intake manifold has different gasket you mights just need to replace the one thats causing your leak
ERICS DIY GARAGE so how do i change them
+Keli Durbin let me ask you somthing when you say its leaking what color is it normally if the intake manifold is leaking your car will idle rough and mis-fire and make a hissing sound
Why is it so complicated to fucking put spark plugs in thats bullshit fucken hate this car.
come on man, clean up the leaves and debris with a shop vac before you start
gk10002000 its not necessary thanks for your concern
U do not have to take all that off for spark plug change lol
I replaced the valve cover gasket as well not just the spark plugs thank you for watching
not a 2006!!!!
kia ruined a really fine suv by using this trash mitshitbishi motor
this guy doesnt know the numerical order of spark plugs just keeps skipping that part. thanks for nothing
🤣
