I love Hamtaro and Gameboy stuff! Even if I don't really understand a thing about this "nerd talk" (Hamtaro's words... not mine!), I really enjoyed the video!
Awesome Job! I've read somewhere on the internet (probably reddit) that this can be done to gen I & II pokemon cartridges, so they can hold onto the saves without the need of a battery. Sorry if misspelled something, English isn't my first language.
Great video. I would like to hear the sounds when you're working on the games. And could you make some videos on tips with soldering etc? You are so skilled.
Thank you! I’m planning on doing a basic and quick soldering tutorial video. I haven’t decided if I want my videos to be more tutorial in nature, or more entertainment. Trying to find a balance.
Yeah, there are a handful of games that use SRAM on the GBA. Hamtaro is one of them, Megaman Battle Network, and Metroid Fusion are others. I think there might be another one out there but those are the ones that I’m aware of.
Amazing, now i can do this to my gameboy advance games that require a battery. Only down fall to this is, it probably won't work on games that uses real time, like Pokemon... bummer..
It’s going to vary by station and your experience level using that station. I’m typically around 750f but I wouldn’t recommend that temp for a beginner. Try 650f to get started.
Interesting mod, never heard of this before. Questions for you, is this a mod that can be performed on older GB and GBC carts aswell? and how would it work for games that require the battery not only for saves but clock based events aswell? i ask as ive seen repro games with modern chips and clock based events no longer work on them and the saves if the power cuts out while trying to save you lose the file which is far less likely to happen with a save battery in play. And old pokemon GB fans know why im asking this question, the good old clone cheat lol
You can still FRAM mod GB / GBC games that have RTC. You’d need to install additional components, OR gate, for it to work properly. I’ve had a lot of people ask about it. I should another video covering it.
Depends on the braid. I use MG Chemicals and it works really well. It has good rosin flux infused in it. Try adding some flux and see if it works better for you.
@@imod.systems I see, but is it possible to replace the battery on an RSE cartridge such that the user no longer has to worry about the internal clock running dry?
I’d recommend getting an FM18W08 from Digikey. You can get the hot plate from retro game repair shop. I have a discount code, imod.systems, that will save you 10% You can FRAM mod blue and gold but the process may be different. Depends on the memory bank controller.
I had no idea this was even possible. This is awesome! Great work
Thank you!
Dangerous video! You do it with such ease and grace it makes even someone like me think I could do it.
Keep up the good work!
I believe you can do it too, with enough practice!
this game is so under rated you never here about it
Glad to see Hamtaro getting some love!
Thanks for giving the video some love as well.
Great video, you lead by example with the good soldering practices.
Thank you!
The quality of your videos is top notch. Love this game!
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! Probably went a bit far with the nerd speak but I wanted to cover it lol.
I never new this was possible! Makes me want to do it to my Metroid games some day, but I have to practice a lot beforehand :)
Just started GB/C and PSP hardware modding. Keep up, really like your vids. Greets from Germany
Good luck with your modding journey and thanks for watching
Great vid! Didn’t even know this was a thing.
This video is so good, I've been watching it for a day.
Sock monkey approves
These videos have all been delightful. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!

Your English is great! You can do this on gen 1 and gen 2 Pokémon games as well. I’ve been meaning to make a video on it. Thanks for watching!
Sweet vid and channel Bro, way more professional than my channel lol
Thank you!
Very cool! Can't wait for more!
Thank you!
Amazing content as usual!
Thank you for the constant support. It truly means a lot!
Every Hamtaro game makes a good cart mod
i though u meant a dab cart and i really thought to myself "i would hit a hamtaro cart"
You’re a god level solderer
Been wanting to do this great video!! 💪🏽
Thank you!
Awesome work!!!🐺😁
Thank you!
Hamtaro, yeah!

What is your Gameboy Advance mod? That doesn't look like the typical unhinged that I see. I love it!
It’s called the Slate sold at Retro Game Repair Shop
This game has a battery?
This mod is cool!

@@imod.systems Interesting. I should check the battery on my game.
Amazing, now i can do this to my gameboy advance games that require a battery. Only down fall to this is, it probably won't work on games that uses real time, like Pokemon... bummer..
Yeah, RTC will always require a battery
That was awesome, great walkthrough!
Quick question, if you don't mind me asking. What temperature do you typically have your soldering iron set to?
It’s going to vary by station and your experience level using that station. I’m typically around 750f but I wouldn’t recommend that temp for a beginner. Try 650f to get started.

YOU CAN DO THAT?!
My Metroid Fusion has the SRAM/battery setup. I was just planning to replace the battery when it dies, instead I'm going to do this.
Yup, just grab an FM18W08. Ideally from Digikey
@@imod.systems Will do, thanks for saving me the trouble of figuring that part out
@@imod.systemsdoes that work with every pcb?
Not sure if you have already answered this, but why did you add solder to both pads for the battery before removing it?
Good question. It’s 20+ year old solder. You add some to freshen it up to make it easier to work with.
Cool! Can you do this with Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald too?? :o
RSE use an EEPROM for save, it doesn’t require a battery. The battery is only used for RTC. Unfortunately, the RTC (clock) will always need a battery.
I have one of those desoldering braid, and it never worked for me
Depends on the braid. I use MG Chemicals and it works really well. It has good rosin flux infused in it. Try adding some flux and see if it works better for you.
The gloves, where do I get them?
ESD gloves. Got them on Amazon
Is this possible with games with an internal clock like Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald?
RSE saves aren't backed by a battery so they shouldn't lose their save once the battery dies
RSE only uses a battery for RTC, not save. Those games do not use SRAM they use EEPROM
@@imod.systems I see, but is it possible to replace the battery on an RSE cartridge such that the user no longer has to worry about the internal clock running dry?
Unfortunately not, RTC will always require a battery. If you use a good quality battery it will only be an issue every 7 years or so.
I wonder if this is possible for gameboy camera
There’s a big game boy camera modding scene out there. I’m not all that familiar with it but I believe they’re using fram.
Can you do the same with Pokémon Games?
You can do that with Pokémon games that use SRAM, yeah.
is it the same process and chip for Pokémon blue and gold? Id love to mod mine this way. Where can i find the chip and hot plate? definitely need one
I’d recommend getting an FM18W08 from Digikey. You can get the hot plate from retro game repair shop. I have a discount code, imod.systems, that will save you 10%
You can FRAM mod blue and gold but the process may be different. Depends on the memory bank controller.
Are you planning on making a video for the gb games since the process is probably different?
never knew this could be done. do you think something similar could be done to gb/gbc games with save batteries?
Yeah, it can. The steps are a little different but you can replace the SRAM with FRAM.
Would love a video to go over how to do this with gb/gbc games if you have the time.
I’ve had a bunch of people ask so I think I’ll do one down the road.
Can you do this with game boy color games
And gba games
This is a GBA game. You can do this to games that used SRAM.
Is this possible in all SRam games? Like on the genesis and snes?
Not entirely positive
where can you get that hot plate tool from?
I got mine from AliExpress. Miniware MHP30
Any way to do this with gen 1 Pokemon games?
Yup, you can. I’d like to do another video showing that off.
