Here 2 unpaired electrons are present in the 3p orbital ,so the covalency is 2. So due to presence of empty d-orbital sulfur can expand its covalency by exciting elelctrons to d-orbital. In the 1st excited state of sulfur it has outer shell electronic configuration 3s2 3p3 *3d1* and has 4 unpaired electrons to form covalent bond and hence the covalency is 4. In the 2nd excited state of sulfur, the outer shell electronic configuration is 3s1 3p3 3d2 , so 6 unpaired electrons to form covalent bond and hence has covalency 6. Hope you understood.
