  • IMPROVISE with Jelske over the chords of the first 8 measures of the JAZZ STANDARD Softly as in a Morning Sunrise. We use a simple method - called melody pathways - which helps you create your own improvised melodies. You can play along with all instruments, like saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, piano, guitar, etc.
Practicing like this, with melodic pathways, is a great exercise to internalize the chords, train your ear and help you develop a natural feel for the flow of harmony across the chord changes
You can use this technique not only in jazz, but also in pop, blues, classical music and other styles of music based on Western harmony.

HI Jelske I like the method and I love your playing very much, but sometime it is a bit hard for me to follow you because I have the feeling that you do not take the last bar into account compared to what's written on the board.
is there something I am missing ?

Hi Michel, thanks a lot. You're right that I am not playing or singing during this last bar. I use it as a moment of rest, to catch a breath and to also leave some space in the music. This kind of 8-bar phrasing phrasing feels very natural in music.
I don't think you're missing anything. I think you noticed this very well!
Is this helpful? Let me know if you have any questions.

@@ImproviseWithJelske HI Jelske, I have just read your answer to my question and I must confess that you brought some relief to my "anxiety" so to speak (lol), because this is something I had already noticed in many of your videos. I spent time counting the stuff on my fingers in 4/4 then in 2/2 and still could'nt figure it out but finally I feel better.
may be I too should take a chance to relax and let the music breathe by itself as softly as in a morning sunrise.
BIG THANKS, and cheers from Paris.
