Hello there. New enthusiast here, I have been watching your videos and had a question about wiring. Is wiring a tree necessary? I have come across a nice Japanese Black Pine specimen, and I don't want to use wire if not needed, and wanted the tree to grow "naturally" while still confined to the pot, and pruning. I would love to see how the tree gives its own personality, instead of imprinting mine.

Yes I have tried 7 larch trees plucked from the woods and the side of the road and while 2 died I’ve managed to keep 5 alive for 2 years in a small planter so far.
Totally screwed up my two branch principal. Forgot the other branch. fml.

Larches do NOT backbud so don't let low branches die back otherwise you have nothing to cut back to in order to get taper. I can't believe a 'pro' is implying they do!
@union310 @union310 It is not disrespectful to quote facts. New branches can only grow from existing buds on Larch. Once these are removed (through poor pruning, shading or apical weakening) Larch will not produce adventitious buds. I know this because I have developed Larch bonsai for over 20 years. If I asked for your experience I know it will be 'very little to non existent' due to the obvious ignorance of your comments. Please do some research before responding - it would be nice if you could apologize.

@@tomekeziowski4293 Yes I am - these were already present, dormant buds. Show me a bonsai Larch that backbudded, ie with no visible buds present. I've been growing Larch for 30 years. Do you have a link to your bonsai Larch ? I have several posted on Reddit under u/Paulpash.
