Footballer-turned-politician Bhaichung Bhutia merges Hamro Sikkim Party with Sikkim Democratic Front

Footballer-turned-politician Bhaichung Bhutia merged his Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) with Pawan Chamling's Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) during a programme at Ravangla in South Sikkim on Thursday. The merger took place in the presence of SDF chief and former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and several senior leaders of the party.
Bhaichung made the formal announcement on September 13 this year. He had also mentioned that the move would take some time since discussions were in process.
Bhaichung was the face and working president of the party since it was floated in 2018. The party contested in the 2019 state elections and fielded 22 candidates but failed to secure a seat. His party also backed the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in the 2019 elections. However, Bhaichung has been critical of both the SKM and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang in recent times.
