  • Unless you've been living under a digital rock for the past 5 years, you probably already know who bassist and TH-camr Adam Neely is. But what you might not know, is how he came to hit 1 million subscribers this month, all from a very niche lane of music theory analysis and video essay production. From topics as diverse as microtonal lo-fi hip hop and Shakuhachi Music, Adam has maintained a consistent upload rate of one video per week for the past 5 years.
    But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his process. From posting bass videos and not having much of a working concept for the channel, to literally transcribing the internet, finding his niche, and reaching the coveted million-subscriber milestone this month, we unpack the journey of the bass player, turned TH-camr, turned music theory guru that is Adam Neely.

    A minor nitpick: Please crop the empty space at the top and bottom! (A letterbox that "dooms" the video to be viewed on a 16:9 or less-wide screen to look as intended). Even the TH-cam upload recommendations help says to never include those, as there is nothing to be gained from them, and they just make the video less enjoyable for those with different aspect ratio screens.
    It's like one of those old 16:9 music videos that have the "cinematic" bars on the top and bottom in order to exactly fit a then-standard 4:3 screen, that on a now-standard 16:9 screen look like they're zoomed out to a small space in the middle of the screen. The same thing happens here on a wider-than 16:9 screen.

    the thing about Neely is; whatever he has to go through to create these videos... it all would not be successful if not for the fact that I have to wonder if there has ever been a better music teacher than him ever. He manages to say stuff which somehow pushes me anyhow but I bet anyone to play better. Whatever level anyone is on; what he says advances the insight. Its uncanny good. Its not all the hot little effects and snarky comments; its just whatever question about music may have been burning in your head for maybe decades (in my case) he manages to hit it square head on; in simple on the level I was wondering about it on; and afterwards the playing is impacted for the better. When I was in elementary school they showed us a Leonard Bernstein Young People's Concert. I remember him saying "its all jazz and I love it" (talking about chords.) The stuff Neely says; the way he says it; somehow impacts me anyhow (and really so many followers; it must be the same with a lot of people; and then when I go to play... wow; better. That kinda makes him the Leonard Da Mingus of teaching music. There are a zillion gadzillion people who can play incredible (neely seems to know about 95% of them.. the guy must be smart as hell) But how many of them can get someone who wants to play to play better? Very very few. I got into it in the GFI video. Db huh... who'd have known that but the even cooler thing is; I went and played it in Db after I heard the Neely analysis. You have to wonder how Michalangelo managed to paint that chapel there in Roma. Instagram probably. how not to suck at music; ... spot on. some people just do stuff good in life. Bernstein called it "talent. all the little effects in the videos seem to relate to the point about the music and makes me suck less at it. it can't get any cooler. in the 60s it was like the Miles Davis factor... at this junction in time.. fact is it will be the neely ... well ya get the point probably or as they'd say in europe; bravo. and mille grazzi ciao

      I agree, but watching Adam’s channel isn’t necessarily focussed on making people that watch it better musicians. Obviously he has many amazing insights into music which people can take from, but a lot of his videos are so far out in terms of music theory that it’s not something most musicians will ever deal with when they’re playing.

    • @marktrop196
      @marktrop196 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hakeemahmadjamal7403 yeah; I know; I first heard his Girl from The Rio Beach vid and o wow; I don't play well enough not to find like other more mechanics of just playing stuff. I do enjoy the Nelly stuff a lot. He is a righteous (young) dude for sure.
      its so interesting to think of the comparison between him as more recent graduate of his school (the first one) and older people from the same school. Adam also led to Ben; but for me the Tony Winston stuff is the most ahh this helps. I liked especially the one where the playing the sound faster and faster led it to transform into a different sound. But really most of his stuff is really dig able. Leonard Berstein would probably call him one of the Young Turks. well; gotta hit it. nice chatting

    I think it's a good thing to not think too much about gear, especially in the first years of learning an instrument. Exploring tone and technology is important, but it can be a massive pitfall for some, and they forget to actually learn and play music. I know people who've been playing for decades, own $50k worth of guitars and gear but can't do shit with them because they were so obsessed about the perfect tone that they never got better with what they already had, and never went past the same old pentatonic licks.

    See, Adam and Janek know that you don't publish your zoom meet video, you combine and publish your high quality a/v, captured simultaneously. If only mainstream TV editors were as savvy as youtubers are.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure that most people know it's better to record in high quality, edit it together, and then publish. But lots of people don't have that luxury or even the know-how sometimes, never mind the 4k setup available, and the patience to upload files etc... I'm totally with you that the HD version of something like this is really nice to look at, and I'm super grateful that Adam is a pro like that. It made for a really great product at the end of the day. But as an interviewer, it's tough to ask or expect that of everyone you interview. The majority of my interviews have been done the zoom way, but as long as the person on the other end is engaging, and has something interesting to say, I think there is still value there.
      I'm definitely looking forward to being able to travel again, and get in the room with the person I'm interviewing. Lots of plans for some great interviews once that becomes a reality once more.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can't speak for Adam, but I know for myself that was a pretty obvious realization just from using the platform myself. I always have to load the video, then scroll away slightly, and then go back to the video to get it to play from the beginning with the audio on. I have a longer attention span than most I would imagine, so to get the average follower to really listen to something, it's good if it starts in the 2nd or 3rd second. That's if you really care about the entirety of the performance also. I think a great deal of the content I post on instagram is not dependent on people seeing the very beginning of the video. But again, that's just my take on it, and how the platform works for me.

    A 'career' on social media? God, what has this world come to

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It has come to the point, as it has in every large generational and technological shift in history, where you have to move with the times. Musicians could very easily sit there and sulk in the corner saying "I play music, and that's all I do, and I'm staying true to my art". Or they could realize the platform is now different, there are no more record labels of any value, the business model is different, and the way we communicate is different. Then, a "career" in social media, becomes a lot more appealing, knowing that what you produce is going to be seen by people, rather than never leave the practice room.
      Unless someone hears and sees what I do as an artist, I'm just an asshole with a bunch of music gear, and some jazz licks. You have to complete the circle on the presentation side of things, and if that means having a career in social media, I'm more than happy pursue it.
