Im Filipino and Indonesian food is so similar to ours, But with different ingredients, like halo-halo (pronounced ha-lo ha-lo not hay-lo hay-lo) our version has different fruits like banana coconut
Actually we don’t call it halo halo in Indonesia! what she ate we call it es campur (mixed ice), never halo halo. She probably only call it that because she only knows its filo name.
Ok but idk why those prawn crackers are so good there! I loved it with the fried rice wrapped in banana leaves for breakfast every day when I was there

I'm sure it's in local currency idr. based on the "higher than normal price" i think she's eating from good restaurants. Better hygiene. but even if you got sick from foreign food, it would only last for few days, your body will gain immunity after that. "the deep fried crackers with crunchy peanut" snack is called 'rempeyek' or 'peyek'!! ❤ aside of peanut, usually peyek is also made with soy beans, mung beans, salted fish/anchovies/'ikan asin', or little shrimps/'udang rebon'! my favorite is probably salted fish peyek lol, they're just very savory and delicious.
I'm indonesian and i miss my days back when I'm young. We usually went to batu city (east java) and due to the lower temp there, every morning i would wake up to bakso seller ringing his bamboo (idk what is it but it sound abit like drums made of wood) to annouce his presence XDD i immediately run bare feet with my blankets wrapped around me like cocoon just to plead to my mom to buy some. Immediately brushed my teeth and went to eat it in on the little swing outside, sunbathing. Best memories. Now can only go back like once every 2 years... last time i went back, i go there and was doing/ eating anything i can till me and my whole fam get sick (exhausted), well i havent been back for 5 years so it's worth it😂😂
Prawn crackers are actually very popular in Malaysia ( or Indonesia as well idk ), especially for Chinese people. We always buy them as one of the Chinese new year snacks 😆
that’s interesting bcs in indonesia prawn crackers are mostly eaten with the most basic local street food like soto, nasi/mi goreng and gado gado, never for chinese food.
Interesting bcs here in Indonesia we always eat with crackers. Prawn, fish, garlic crakers, rice crackers, rempeyek, opak from casava, kerupuk from pecel Semanggi Idk the name, etc Even some dish have it's own crackers.
Can I just say that I really appreciate your content and how respectful you are about what you eat when traveling to different countries! We love people like you!
