  • Gary, which was estimated in 2015 to have nearly 7,000 vacant buildings, has periodically suffered from problems with arson. An arson fire killed three children in December 2016, and the infamous blaze of 1997 rampaged through downtown, destroying several buildings and damaging City Methodist Church, the former Goldblatt's Department Store and the historic Memorial Auditorium where President Truman visited and where the Jackson Five performed.

I was born in this city. Back in ‘65. It was a different place then. Much nicer but...on its way to getting like this. The steel industry collapsed starting in the 70’s and wiped out this town once jobs started going away. We moved in ‘76 as I was getting in fights daily and Mom and Dad didn’t feel safe here anymore.

I left in 2002 and finally came back in 2018 to visit.. The difference was almost as bad as 1970 vs 1990 but with no money left to invest in new projects. I dont even see why they let those old politicians run gary anymore smh. Im 31 and far as I know, none of my generation cares to comes back to at least revert gary's commerce and economics to 1990's level. You only have middle aged and senior citizens running the show. I want to come back to help but my life is in georgia.

I worked as a manager of a bank in Gary back in 2013 for a little over a year. I heard how Gary was dangerous but after working there I never felt like my life was in danger. If anything it was depressing to see the state the people and city in general were in. By comparison, I’d spend any amount of time in Gary versus spending even a minute on Chicago’s south and west sides. I’d rather fight depression than fight for my life.

A large beige building stands there now, curious what it houses. The Gary hotel was a lovely building, the only building that there is a sign of life in it now. We ate there several times a week, was always very good, as was the Lake hotel on Wash. St. . What a crying shame. Your music selection was perfect.

I wonder what will happen to Silicon Valley once they send the tech industry overseas or even to less expensive areas in the US. I'm sure these companies are going to start getting tired of paying bloated salaries for people living in the Bay Area. California's success is an illusion. It is riding on a tech and a real estate bubble. I guess you can enjoy it while it lasts.

Jobs in Gary were most manufacturing jobs, so when manufacturing jobs went overseas, that meant that the jobs left the city, and when there’s no jobs, people leave, and when people leave, cities begin to look neglected and abandoned, then the poverty that comes with jobs leaving a city begins to set in. The result is Gary plus many other cities in the Rust Belt region of the US declining economically,

I find that I'm in the back seat of some car or other, looking at buildings as I pass them. What's amazing is that downtown Chicago is only about 40 miles from there. Chicago city limits are only around 15-20 miles.
A lot of Chicago underwent serious decay during the 1960s until the 1980s. Whole neighborhoods and industrial districts were virtually abandoned and rotting. But today property that was completely derelict in say 1980 is now intensely developed, bustling, and worth an obscene amount of money. For the most part even lower income neighborhoods look decent. The property in many lower income areas is worth a lot of money; way too much for most residents to afford to own.
It's all about the money. Gary has very little use to the economy any more. What I see in this video makes me sad.

Right...in other countries they just throw up buildings to have buildings for looks. North Korea is the best example but plenty of other countries do this. Then they are left with an entire skyline full of unused and unfinished buildings, that generate zero money. At this point, for a place like downtown gary to become relevant again, it would need to be completely leveled and rebuilt, with plans and contracts with businesses already in place to come in after rebuilding. Its beyond that point of being able to do something like bringing in one big manufacturing plant or something to turn the economy around. This place is a true ghost town.

It's all black people and not close enough to Chicago to be jentrified. The location is actually descent though. On the water with a short train commute to downtown Chicago. They also have low Indiana state taxes. But what higher income white family would send their kids to those Gary schools??? Zero. Not even the most ardent blm loving liberal would do that!

Funny how no one talks about the GIANT elephant in the room. Poverty didn't cause the destruction of Gary, people did. Look at any one of the surrounding towns and you will not see burned out buildings by the dozen, abandoned mansions, and just general filth. At one time they were all dependent on the same industry as Gary. And when those jobs left, the people there found other work, or created their own businesses. The difference? Gary was a chocolate city. And they did what they almost always do when they gain control of a city; they looted it then burned it down.
