This is the most amazing scene in all opera and music in every way. I fell in love with a violin performance of this meditaion in grade 9, 48 years ago. This was the very piece that took me out of rock and roll. I'm ecstatic to have found this opera scene.
Each time I watch Thais I love it more and more. Only The Met could do this opera and the staging is so wonderful. I think Massenet's music in this is the best he ever composed and Renee Fleming's voice and costumes.....just divine, like liquid gold. I love Thomas Hampson too and the way their roles are reversed in the finale. She turns religious and he realises he loves her and is willing to renounce God and Heaven. Then that wonderful Meditation violinist.......just epic
Like a few others, I had discovered this opera through my violin repertoire. I had, for the longest time, been oblivious to the fact that I was playing a piece with such longing and passion and pain and peace. The opera is tragic yet breathtaking, and I am so glad to have found this masterpiece!
INCREDIBLE!!! All I knew of this opera was the 'meditation' until I saw it on Sky Arts from the Met-blown away!!! Renee gorgeous with a capital G and Thomas-long hair....stubble....anguished,,,,,,,,bring it on!!! Fabulous. have it on DVD and love it despite its sadness.
SolomonPlunket ... Honestly I don't like her so much ..but as a German I must admit that she was the only singer who sang the unpopular Richard Strauß not to bad in the last year ...what is hardly manageable for a not german singer.. also here ... as whole production ... very seldom ... and I live in Europe...
This is so beautiful that every time I listen to it tears roll down my eyes. How kind the 'gods' were to Renee Fleming, to be blessed with so much beauty, in body as well in voice. What music is more beautiful than Meditation? It is indeed marvelous singing on the part of Fleming and Hampson!!!
Brilliant! I like that they put sub titles in English. I love opera and knowing the story adds to my enjoyment and increases my emotional involvement in the piece which inevitably leads to tears.
Unfortunately there are some translation mistakes. Like at the beginning it says "I only remember your kindness" but in French he says "I only remember your mortal/physical beauty"
This is the most perfect performance of Thais from start to finish - and this Finish , C’est Toi Mon Pere, is powerful, beyond any other performance I know of!
This has to be one of the definitive performances of this opera. Renee Fleming was exceptional. Is anyone aware if there is a sound recording of Leontyne Price doing this role?
Marvelous singing. And that melody, which I believe is called 'Meditation', is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written,in my opinion. Che bellissima musica! Bravo Massenet !
Best rendition of this aria EVER... the endless high D are perfects and sound that the aria is perfectly and mastery done... I hate this aria with high D done with pitted note... just perfect here
@StuartLou I listened to the Kirsten and Merrell recording. Did not think it close to this. They are great, The way Renee sings this itis as if it was written for her.
I saw this Met production, wonderful performances. I always found the staging of this final scene odd - that Thais, though dying, was sitting up. It may have been done at Fleming's request, but having her on her death bed woulda made more sense given the narrative even it that's a more difficult position to sing from. This opera has such an interesting framework - Thais, the sinner, meets Athenial, the holy man only briefly, yet it is a meeting that sets her on a road to repentance and heaven and him on the road to renouncing his beliefs and, we can assume, condemnation. They come back together only briefly as she is dying. He professes his love, but she is already actively dying and doesn't hear him, but sees the afterlife opening up to her and describes that magnificent scene, ignoring him.
Played the violin solo for so long not knowing it was just accompaniment to this out of this world duet. It looks almost dangerous to sing that kind of libretto and just sink into the role of a dying character.
I'm wondering if the Mother Superior is being subng by MEZZO MARIA ZIFCHAK (sp) at the time so important to the MET as a staple MEZZO, able to sing most genres.
Many productions in the Met seem like coming from the XIX century... always stuck to the libretti till the last detail. A little bit of imagination would be warmly welcome. Hampson and Fleming are an absolute reference here, both are magnificient. It seems López-Cobos is the conductor. Massenet had an apparently unlimited talent for irresistible melodies, this opera is a marvel, unknown for many. And I find the plot is quite interesting, with a monk losing his faith while a libertine woman finds it for surrender. It happens in the last two thousand years…

I wish I had discovered this wonderful opera years ago - what a finale, what sublime, exquisite irony.
Wow! Fleming will go down in history for this role!!! Her voices true full glory is revealed in this role! The music fits her voice like a glove!
Gracias a este artista por crear esta opera, es tan hermosa y profunda

This is so beautiful... Every time I listen to it I can't help but cry
Inoubliable Thaïs, avec l'inoubliable Fleming, alors au sommet de son art.
Fleming amd Hampson... Untouchable...

This finale is an absolute miracle from start to finish. So gorgeous.
A great deal of positive things are quite rightly said about her other roles, but this is the one for her❤
Lovely lovely singing from Fleming who is so well suited to Massenet.
I literally can't stop listening to this
same
+Christopher Lau just can't stop either.
I can't how many times I have listened to this. Makes me wan't to take vows!
My name 😍 but so sad 😕
Somehow, Renée Fleming kept ending up in operas that ended with a baritone on his knees desperately confessing his love and frankly, mood :D
Next time I will get a tenor
Isn't that what we all secretly fantasize? You can keep the tenor, thanks.
Bella Fleming!!!❤❤❤
It's difficult to even swallow when listening to such splendor. I simply love Renee Fleming period!
Only Fleming can do that plunge from high D to low B in virtually a no-break legato. Thompson makes my eyes wet.
SolomonPlunket ... I will see Thais in Monte Carlo in February 2021 the first time live on stage
@@mucfan I wish she would have sung Aminta once.
Faint from the greatness of this music.
Those easy, creamy and ... "endless high notes" as Maria Jeritza would have said, are fabulous!
One of the most beautiful duet in Opera

Breathtakingly beautiful
Son las lágrimas más maravillosas que han llorado mis ojos.
what beautiful lines of singing...

DIVA!!! Such beatiful duet!!! BRAVO!
Stunningly beautiful and effective............. I adore THAIS as all of Massenet with whom I share a birthday though near 100 years apart.
Thompson is the most touching Athaniel for me so far. He makes me weep.
What extraordinary voices! Alone each is awesome; together totally mesmerizing.
I think Reneé Fleming is the best Thaiis of all time. No one can't sing better than her ! Brava Thaiis, brava Reneé !
Beverley sills was also amazing in this role
@@operadoc not matching Fleming tho
This is the most perfect performance of Thais from start to finish - and this Finish , C’est Toi Mon Pere, is powerful, beyond any other performance I know of!
This has to be one of the definitive performances of this opera. Renee Fleming was exceptional. Is anyone aware if there is a sound recording of Leontyne Price doing this role?
Christopher Brooks Alas, there isn't. Just a 1970 concert performance of the mirror aria (and the recording of it).
Marvelous singing. And that melody, which I believe is called 'Meditation', is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written,in my opinion. Che bellissima musica! Bravo Massenet !
I first saw Thais in 1976 with Beverly Sills. She was great and created a haunting character, but Renee Fleming has a much creamier voice.
C'est fabuleux !!
Fleming forever! Brava Renee!!!...
Beautiful music! It has to come from God!
RECORDANDO ESTA BELLA ESCENA
Hermosísimo y conmovedor hasta las lágrimas!
Best rendition of this aria EVER... the endless high D are perfects and sound that the aria is perfectly and mastery done... I hate this aria with high D done with pitted note... just perfect here
Amazing, Thank you!
BRAVOOO BRAVISSIMO René...!
What a wonderful interpretation ....and singing !!!!!
Meravigliosi Fleming e Hampson
Simplemente maravilloso "!!
Wow! Even the mother abbess sounds great!!!
I have been attending Opera since my childhood. Thais , especially this version is one of my favorites.
@StuartLou I listened to the Kirsten and Merrell recording. Did not think it close to this. They are great, The way Renee sings this itis as if it was written for her.
Divine.Divine.Divine. Pure pleasure.
You are correct, divine, divine, divine and devine!!!
Such a beautiful stuff here
Lovely singing! Brava! Bravo! TY.
Amazing!
Thanks

Fantastic!!!!
Gänsehaut pur! I´m always such a cry-baby....Her voice is amazing!
It's to die for
so wonderful!!!
Une des plus grandes incarnations d'une Renée Fleming souveraine et dont la beauté est transcendée par les superbes costumes de Lacroix...
My idea of a perfect evening is to play this video, then the one with Kirstein, and finally the one with Sills.
That's exactly why she has reached the high position she is now!
Maravilloso Dúo, final de ""Thais""
Ces deux chanteurs nous ont offert une spectacle grandiose que je possède en DVD !
Holy shit HOW does Renee Fleming exist??????? What???? WHAT????? Ridiculously beautiful I simply CANNOT
Played the violin solo for so long not knowing it was just accompaniment to this out of this world duet. It looks almost dangerous to sing that kind of libretto and just sink into the role of a dying character.
AMAZING!!!!!
Renee Fleming divina Thais.
Right on, bassoturco. The mother superior has the voice for Thais.
Meravigliosa scena 👏🏻
5:46 I really love this moment
I'm wondering if the Mother Superior is being subng by MEZZO MARIA ZIFCHAK (sp) at the time so important to the MET as a staple MEZZO, able to sing most genres.
It was, in fact, Maria Zifchak as Albine.
Who's the violinist playing the Meditation theme?
Nicholas Prakash David Chan
Gran interpretación de T. Hampson & R. Fleming
Maravillosa escena final de Thais
WoW
Thais è una delle migliori opere di Massenet
Bellísimo Dúo finnal

Just close your eyes and listen. If you go to the opera for a production, you are wasting your time; go to the movies.
@@JK-xz6mj Even if you disagree with someone else, wouldn't it be nicer to remain civil please?
no way! fleming's voice is perfectly suited for this piece. brava renee!
Рене поет так,словно она и вправду среди ангелов и видит лицо Господа. Забываю обо всем,слушая это дивное пение. Воистину прекрасно!
Hermoso final.

Rather fine, sorry, I realise the point of comments is to moan about how much better someone else is but it's rather good.
You forgot, it always has to be about how much better somebody else is AND how X years ago, all singing was better. ;-)
Great music! Renée sounding gorgious! Thomas hampson oh well no comment
precioso
The best version of Thais! Fleming has surpassed herself.
The staging is totally unconvincing unfortunately
tenormaniati I agree.
genauso
I could listen to this beautiful music every day abd never get bored with it!
@MusicVocalism Nope. Not at all.
🙆🏾♀️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Why don't people date their clips?? I would love to now when this was recorded :)

UN PEU RIDICULE. ELLE MORT ASSISE IN A CHAIR. IL FAUT VOIR EVA MEI E PERTUSI. ALLEZ-Y.
+sergio peixoto Yes, this version is ridiculous. Ten times better version of La Fenice with Eva Mei and Michele Pertusi. Best singing and acting too.
bellas interpretaciones para una escenografía q no estaba a la altura, eso de la silla me parece pésimo

Sublime !!!
