    • Big Chill Post-Film Q&A
In late August 2020, I set out to complete a 110 mile / 177 km long mountain route in Chilliwack, BC. The route goes from Cultus Lake to Chilliwack Lake and back, with 108 miles of unique terrain, and involves over 33,000ft / 10,000m of climbing and descent, via four major mountain passes. This is the first known linkage of this route in this manner.
I respectfully acknowledge that this run took place through the unceded lands of the Stó:lō Nation, in the traditional territory known as S'olh Temexw.
This is a film by fellow Salomon athlete ‪@JeffPelletier‬ please check out his channel and consider giving him a follow as well.
Link to my Strava activity, note that the file does not show the full gps line as my watch went into battery saver mode:
    / strava
Link to full route uploaded to Fatmap:
    fatmap.com/rou...
Link to full route uploaded to Gaia:
    www.gaiagps.co...
*regarding elevation stats, every service interprets this data slightly differently. To get our full GPS file we had to stitch my file, that went into battery saver mode, with two additional run files from my pacers. When this route in its entirety is loaded into Strava, it shows 33,366ft of gain and loss. I am choosing not to host this file on my Strava though, as my original run file has already been uploaded, the one that went into battery saver mode and does not show the full gps line. To upload both files to my Strava would then skew my personal training stats by adding in another 110 mile 37.5hr effort, and I am very particular about keeping accurate training data in Strava. We are very confident in saying that this route has over 30,000ft of gain and loss.

As a local who has worked and played in the Chilliwack Valley since 1971, I found this film wonderful in so many ways- the scenery and cinematography evoked many memories and much joy.
Gary, your mental and physical vicissitudes were so honest and inspiring and your narration was so intimate. It felt like we were with you. Thanks to both you and Jeff for putting this together. 5 STARS!

Debatable. It's important to realize that every day is a day that you have the power to remember for the rest of your life. It can become silly living for a future moment like a long-planned hike as this is. Rather, focus on the present moment, and improving this focus should be at the center of anyone's attention.

@@tf3799 simply focusing if followed rigidly like you laid it out is harmful. Focusing on anything which happens to be in the current experience is how you spiral out into depression and the more you focus on that negative thought and feeling the more you will be sad - while following your 'focus on present moment'.

you learn quickly doing cross country passes that they look daunting from afar but the way is revealed as you work through it. I spend all winter and spring studying maps, trip reports, asking friends, etc... the routes waypoints, photos get burnt into my brain. the amount of preparation that goes into route finding allows me to be best prepared but completing the route is done moment to moment, a great puzzle that gets solved as it presents itself. I become hyper aware and that zen is magical.

Woah! Amazing! This film makes me want to move to Chilliwack or at least hike there.
I really appreciated the land acknowledgement at the end. As a First Nations person it's a small thing that sometimes gets overlook so thank you for doing that 😊

Don't know anyone involved in this, but I know all the peaks and places as my backyard growing up in Chilliwack. Outstanding weather and footage. All I remember of those trails are "conditions" and blisters. Not a trail runner, cuz I'm legally blind and getting blinder, but I've bagged a few peaks and passes locally and around the globe in my life. I can smell and feel everything in your footage. From the puking to the squishy muck to the scratchy undergrowth to the sting of sliding across an icy snow patch to the bracing peak air. Just don't understand the utter lack of rain. Amazing filmography. Footage, storyline, f/x, pacing, audio... Nice work.

wow, amazing David! My brother-in-law is blind and he always amazes me at how his listens to audiobooks at warp speed and can understand what's being said while I can barely understand it's English!

Just another anonymous youtube comment, but that's a beautiful film Gary. I'm a late 40s, hill walking resident of the UK, who'll never do anything on this scale, but I still find the outdoors the most fullfilling, replenishing, peacefull place to be, and watching you and your endeavours is an inspiration

But, today this was recommended to me and I excitedly decided to live through the adventure of someone else. Thank you for doing this. Its very inspiring. I can't wait to get out and get lost again soon.

Gary.....This made me smile so many times for so many reasons. I love your unbridled passion and emotion and how you wear it all on your sleeve for the world to see. It's part of what makes you who you are. A racer to the end is such a metaphor. Hard charging because you just can't help it. The feeling of flying at the end of the journey. So good and there is no doubt your pacers understood. I'm so happy to see you so happy in yourself and your family. You've had your share of setbacks thru the last few years but as the Japanese proverb reminds us, 7 times falling down, 8 times rising up. Keep being awesome Gary and give Linda a big hug for me. Billy
