I remember this show so well as I used to live in Osborne road farnborough just beside the temporary footbridge and used to sell the programs so I could get into the air show for free.Some of the best days of my life
From what I can remember of Farnborough airshows in the 70s, they were awesome. But this 60s Farnborough airshow, is on an entirely different level altogether. British made aircraft, spectacular low level flying and the spectators are smartly dressed as well! My, how times have changed.
In 1962 l was stationed next door to F/boro , in Elles Bks. and was able to watch many types of aircraft , for free . A plane spotters paradise , for sure .
WOW...I'm totally in awe with this amazing and rare archive footage of the golden days of Farnborough and British aviation engineering. I only wish I was alive then to witness all this. My eyes nearly popped out when I saw the T1 experimental aircraft having very recently seen this at RAF Cosford in their super museum. This features all my favourite stuff and what better way to start than with the VC-1O WOW WOW WOW thank you for posting.
I was there- I can remember the Southern steam engine at North Camp station waiting with the train to take us back to Reading. I can also remember the Bristol 188- quite a plane! The Trident flew over our house in 1962. Happy Days.

And then the Great Brutish Empire simply collapsed, imploded, & then rapidly unexpectedly disassembled itself...; all because unless some pre-existing ENVIRONMENTAL Surplus is available - to be exploited by overharvesting, then NO EcoGnomic Activity is possible... And by the finish of The Great Waaauugh(!) of Two, the inhabitants of Blighty's farflung Empire (of Foreign Resources...) had figured out that not-so-minor Point, and we-alls withdrew from the arrangement (Spoiler Alert - after which Britain stopped preferentially trading with it's Post-Colonial "British Commonwealth" Rump, and fully embraced it's Continental EuroPeon side {"Landless Ignorant Peasant" plus "From Europe Comes....). Thus, ALL the underlying assumptions upon which the SBAC was founded, had turned out to be absolute pure total Bullshit, by 1962 ; and to be honest, NOTHING which British Politicians either did - or proposed doing, at the time, was ever going to change ANY part of the nature of the Market for Aeroplanes. Great video! The Vulcan looks to be XA894 with the Olympus 320 engine underneath.. testbed for the ill-fated TSR2! The engine was later developed into the Olympus 593 Concorde..
Howerd Rose, yes and I was there to see it fly, back then almost everything on display was British made! It really made you proud to be British! Sadly, its all changed, I do not think that we will ever be the same again, very sad. 😞
@@davidmichaels8934 Even if there was a British manufacturer it would be producing the same boring shape as everyone else. At least we got to joy a honeymoon period that was a spectacle for the eyes! What made these aircraft amazing was the technology inside, the engineering. That hasn’t gone away…. Britain still has the second largest aerospace industry in the world and is a leader in developing new technologies.. the sector it is in much better shape today than it ever was. Most aircraft flying today contain a huge amount of British built, designed or manufactured tech and engineering.
Perhaps the greatest British air show ever , only wish I could have been there. Beats the pale imitations of today now that the Vulcan has been grounded as a result of the treachery of the 3 'support' companies.
Incredible and sad when you realise that not one of these pioneering British engineering firms exists today. And worth noting that in its day the VC10 was the most advanced airliner in the world with the first implementation of autopilot, the Vulcan was also way ahead of anything Boeing were doing too.

Those were the days when all the aircraft flew by at eye level and at rather naughty speeds. There was also a small mix of oldies as well, I'm going to have to search out my old B & W photos now.
went as a kid in the very early 70's....saab viggens hugging the ground supersonic on reheat just a rope to stop spectators wandering on to the runway...nice.
@@lapisredux Now you're talking my language, Saab Viggen, what a beast!!!! Used to enjoy those old airshows, we had the Draken in those days, pretty in comparison. A couple of highlights that I will always remember were the silence that descended when Concorde overflew and the first RAF Phantom crouching at the end of the runway under full reheat with dancing diamonds. It's all a bit ho hum these days😴
Fascinating to see the Buccaneer S1 on the ground with the original retractable refuelling probe. It caused such severe buffeting in the engine it had to be replaced with a fixed probe of greater length.
That is a Blackburn (later Hawker-Siddeley) Buccaneer strike aircraft, used by the Royal Navy from the early 60's to the mid 90's. It did see action in the Gulf War.
I distinctly remember the Vulcan with Olympus engine and the HP115 demonstrating its oscillation in roll axis at high angle of attack (strangely don't remember the Harrier/hp1127?). Unless they flew at the same show in later years that would make this one of my earliest memories at just 6 years old!
It is not just our inability to make complete aircraft either. How much of the Army and Navy equipment is now built from parts made abroad? A once great nation denuded of real defensive capability by politicians and the left wing civil service.
What i have coming to notice is that the military planes made by Uk during that period maybe lack inovation ( 50s-70s ) One exception is Harrier but only with US help -It's like small companies making and propsing airplanes without resourses and then the Uk air force just picking the first that works basicilly ,so it seems to me - they didnt learn anyting from German ww2 construction (only canberra was a german copy ) like the swedes Tunnan and Draken was german ww2 copies from papers swedes took ( how is another question).
Well I might know more than you know Geoff about how things go - dont be naive , ask the olds that are about to die of age how the things really went eg , fift collons would suit you I guess -but i would rather point at suspicions and next to a unability from the companies in how to market a plane and next to the system at that current time but its history and likes like yo writes the history now - so edjucate yourself.
What a great, aircraft industry you British had! If your governments had supported it, you'd still, very much, be GREAT Britain. I get the distinct impression though, that your politicians (facing elections every 3 to 4 years) preferred to spend the money on short term gains. In other words, they used tax payers' money, to buy votes. I can't help but feel, that everyone your country, would be better off today, if your leaders had had the courage to strive for longer, term goals. The inventiveness and creativity of British minds, is still there. I have seen it in many forms in the decades since this air show - David Attenborough, Monty Python, The Beatles ...etc. Somehow, the forces of mediocrity, that are so strong in my country, have also come to the fore in Britain. Even the way that the narrator of this video speaks, is an accent, now frowned upon.

There wasn't one. It became biennial from 1962 onwards.
