Thank you for your service. I'll note that this video is about the Hill 65 in War Zone D (which included Saigon). Not the same as the Hill 65 referred to in the novel Fields of Fire (if indeed there was a Hill 65 in the zone around Da Nang)
Yes there was a Hill 65 West of Danang. My battalion, 1/7 Marines spent a lot time there, and in that vicinity, in the late winter early spring of 1969. As did many other Marine units during the war. A few Army units too I believe.
I was on Hill 65, my first operation. I was with headquarter's section, Alpha, 1/503rd, 173rd on Nov. 8, 1965. We lost LT Ugland, first patoon, which I joined after Hill 65. I was with Captain Daniels and LT Conneto on the landing zone (LZ) "stuck" at twilight; we were waiting for a Huey to extract us and it wasn't clear if we were going to get out. We did, obviously, but there was no guarantee that we were going to get out. We had about five "troopers" on the LZ besides the two officers; Staff Sergeant Lehe (spelling) was KIA two months later in the Hobo Woods, 11 Jan. 66. He was a great soldier and took out a sniper while we were stuck on the LZ. He used a shotgun.
