  • Showing whats involved in removing and replacing the EGR valve and how to free it from sticking.
    If your Volvo v50 2.0d suddenly suffers from loss of power with lots of dark smoke from the exhaust it's a sure sign the EGR valve is sticking open.

    Thank you for the advice John took mine off and cleaned today. If I had not of watched your video I would never of known about the small bolt under the EGR which like you said is a pain to undo because it is an Allan cap head, but I took your advice and replaced it with a new Hex bolt, much easier to do up.

    I believe I may have the same issue on my 2008 V50 2.0D, last couple of weeks has been very hesitant with acceleration, cannot feel the turbo spool up like it normally does and just feels gutless all the way through the rev range. It is however intermittent, sometimes I have power and then other times I drive it and it's gutless. May attempt the blanking off to confirm before attempting to remove the valve, looks like it's a bugger to do! Thanks for the video.

    Hi John. Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing.
    I have a 2007 Mondeo which uses this engine, albeit with a DPF. In the Mondeo at least, blanking the EGR valve does not cause an error code and it's advised to leave the EGR plugged in.
    What I did find, however, is with the EGR blanked, the engine ran much much cooler and would take much longer to warm up which was not only uncomfortable in winter, it also reduced my fuel economy. I tested this over 30,000 miles and then recently removed the EGR blank. Since removing it, the engine warms up quicker, runs slightly warmer, and is actually slightly better on fuel as a result. Also, any performance decrease from having the EGR in place is negligible. I have read the live data from the engine and when at light throttle or no throttle, the EGR is open and allowing gas through. But, as soon as you floor it, the valve closes within milliseconds to ensure the engine only breathes clean air when more performance is needed.
    The car is on 221800 miles and is still on the original engine components including clutch, DPF, EGR, and injectors.
    I will be removing the EGR more so out of curiosity to see what it looks like.
    Little tip, if the clamp on the big silver EGR pipe starts to fail, the newer design from Peugeot is a a screw down rather than spring clamp, and they're about £6 on ebay if you search for 2.0 HDi EGR clamp.
    Happy motoring.

    Hello John, I only have the egr unplugged but sometimes I get the engine service necessary message and then the engine loses power and emits black smoke. Would it be better to put a blanking plate and plug in the egr, or is it ok just leaving it unplugged? Thank you

    • @johnbower
      @johnbower  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, It might depend on the year of manufacture, our 2006 model runs fine with the egr unplugged and no blanking plate fitted, but you first have to make sure the valve is fully closed before unplugging it, only way to be sure valve is fully closed is to remove it then clean both the valve stem and face to make sure the valve face is making a good seal, then refit the valve without plugging in the connector. You can try fitting a blanking plate in case the valve is stuck open a bit but the valve will need to be unplugged.
      Note: I have had to resort to running our car with the valve unplugged due the valve repeatedly getting stuck, it also runs fine with the blanking plate fitted providing the valve is unplugged, but if the blanking plate is fitted when the valve is still plugged in a warning light shows on the dash. Two years ago after the last removal and cleaning of the valve I refitted it without plugging it in, it is now running better than ever, with no warning light and low emissions.

    Did you check that you didn't have any boost pipe leaks, causing the engine to run rich, which then would make a lot of soot build up on the egr valve, making it stick?

    • @johnbower
      @johnbower  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aman A, No problem with boost pressure and definitely no leaks.
      Note: If there were any serious boost pipe leaks (this would not cause the valve to stick) boost pressure would be lower, therefore less pressure to blow exhaust soot past the valve stem.

    • @amana1480
      @amana1480 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnbower I thought if there was a boost pipe leak, the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders becomes too rich.... the exhaust gases would become more rich/sooty, and this would build up on the exhaust valve/egr valve more quickly.... I think you are thinking of the air intake pressure being lower (not enough clean air going into engine)?

    • @johnbower
      @johnbower  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amana1480, When the EGR valve is open there is an open passage between the exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold, so the pressure in both the exhaust and inlet manifold will be equal, therefore any drop in pressure due to a leak in a boost pipe or the intercooler etc will also be lower in the EGR valve, so less pressure to blow soot up past the valve stem.

The lower difficult setscrew is 6mm and requires a 5mm Allen key.

      mihai radu, It seams like air flow restriction to the engine.
      If it is not the egr valve at fault check out other things that can restrict air flow.
      (a) Check out the air flow shut off flap located inside air intake pipe just before inlet manifold, this flap may be stuck restricting air flow.
      (b) When was the engine air filter last changed, this will restrict air flow if dirty, note: if you have had problem with dpf contaminated then catalytic converter could also be contaminated creating back pressure in exhaust manifold, this back pressure gets released backwards upstream into the air filter every time the engine stops and contaminates the air filter.
      (c) If there is no restriction with air flow then the engine is getting to much fuel so could be a problem with injectors.
      Good Luck.

      Nathan suley, best way to check if the EGR valve is at fault without removing it, blank off the pipe that fits between the EGR valve and the inlet manifold, undo the two bolts that hold the pipe to the valve and slide a thin flat piece of metal between the flange on the valve and the flange on the pipe to block off any flow through the pipe, two holes will be needed in the blanking plate for the bolts to pass through and be re-tightened, if there is improvement when the blank is in place then the EGR valve is sticking open.

    3:28 Yes a poor design definitely, prone to making the valve stick open.... did you lose a lot of power and mpg with this fault? I wonder why they didn't design it so the motor moves the valve to the closed and to the open position.... I wonder why they relied on the motor to open the valve, but a spring to close the valve...

      Aman A, Yes with the valve sticking open a lot of power was lost making it difficult for the car to be driven.
      There is nothing wrong with using a spring to close the valve, the problem lies with the cam design which creates side loading to the valve stem causing it to stick due to soot build up on the stem, also the valve stem bush is too far down the valve stem giving the cam more lateral leverage on the valve stem.
      First thing needed is a well designed seal made from PTFE to stop exhaust soot getting up the valve stem, secondly the valve stem bush needs to be closer to the end of the valve stem, this would then rectify the problem, but the EGR valve manufactures would then loose out on there replacement sales.

      It’s basically fighting against the run of play as they say!
      Better if it was an offset cam favouring the return with the least resistance!
      Design fault favouring the Main Dealers no doubt???

      Hi I know is an old video but did you have any problems putting back the aluminium bottom part to the intercooler where the rubber seal is on? Mine doesn't want to go fully in. I tried to screw in but it just bends the plates.
