Excellent work Richard. Definitely an inspirational effort. Really looking forward to it progress. An idea I saw some time ago at an exhibition, was to cut out a piece of card the same size as the floor area of the building. Then place pieces of furniture on the card, then to place the building on top of the card, therebye giving the impression of the building being furnished. This method looks even better with the inclusion of figures and lighting. Keep up the excellent work Richard. Kind regards. John
HI Richard, very good, nice to see the progress through sections of your layout, the suberb section looks very good so far, fits that part of the layout very well Andy
It's great the way you manage to set a different scene in every part of the layout, you're a great inspiration to us beginners, so thank you for sharing all this with us, looking forward to the next update :) Mark
I'm loving this type of videos you do. You put enough to make them very appealing and make us want to see the next one,and you also do a lot of great cool bits scenery everywhere on it. Awesome job! Cheers RT
You Sir are a genius! Simply fantastic what you can produce. It makes me want to do my own but sadly i lack the four main things....talent, room, time and cash. Maybe in a few years time i guess but in the mean time please keep the updates coming.
This is great, you are giving me so many ideas for my layout. Just need to see if I can get those 70's detached houses in N scale. Looking forward to part 2.
Good job Richard, the Bachmann buildings are excellent, I have many of them including the low relief ones and they are really good quality. The low relief Station Hotel is fab especially if you use coloured card to make open and shut curtains with lighting inside. Andy
Great job on the new corner. I use styrene to make my curbs. In my area there is grass between the road and the side walk. I've been trying to make some roads around the warehouse and its been interesting.
Another informative video Richard. Love the kerb stone system. Can I make a comment about the garage and the town houses. Nearly all the garages I have come across have a bit of land at the side for the scrap tyres, a bin for the metal scrap full of exhaust pipes etc and a space for a parked car or two, waiting for that spare part on it's way down from Dagenham. A week they said and its close on a week and a half already.. May bee move a town house up a bit for the garage space. Only an idea. Love your videos, don't stop. Barry. Devon.
OBowner Thanks Barry. I'm very short of space so can't really move the town houses. There is a space across the road I was going to use for customer cars and rubbish.
I chuckled at the row of identical houses with identical front lawns, identical driveways, and identical red fiestas. It looked like it should be a photo in the publicity brochure from the development company :)
Excellent work. I wish I had seen this before I built my village. I could have used some of your ideas. I noticed all a car were the same just before you said something about it and it gave me a start. The way you've laid the streets is perfect with the two curving away. You will be able to put the camera at the other end and look down the street and not see the wall. Nicely done. You can always paint the inside of the buildings black and put lights in them. That way you can avoid the pyroclastic look.
Great update Richard those houses and garage do look the part mate, good way of doing the path ways can't beat match sticks always useful to have around. I do like the end result of the town scene houses but a bit creepy that they all drive red fiestas lol need to get a couple of rover sd1s mate. Kev
Looking great, those 60s-70s houses are great, and I love the driveways and lawns. I can see creating this diorama is going to be good fun with all the different detailing you can add! Will there be working street lights?
Looking good - those 70s houses really look the part. I'll be interested to see what you do with the Tyre / Exhaust centre as I'm going to be incorporating one into CC over the coming days. I had a red Fiesta & later on a Sierra too. I preferred the Fiesta on the basis that unlike the Sierra I never ended up sticking it in a ditch!!!!
***** My dad had a red Fiesta and a white Sierra. They were both good cars. Personally I prefer the Sierra as is RWD. I'm looking forward to messing around with the garage. I might butcher some cars to look as though they are being worked on.
Love all the projects you have on the go at once 😃 Great work on new housing area mate , just an idea you should add odd patch on roads and corseys where some utilies have been dug up and roughly tarmact ? Grates odd pothole lol Im sure you will with all the detail you put in 👍also loving the canal mate looks great
If that was a new-build estate in the 1970s, I would imagine that by the 1980s/1990s there wouldn't actually be a huge amount of variation in the houses, certainly not as much as today's housing. My house was built in 1968, in a estate where the doors were (I think) red, blue, green or yellow, in a repeating pattern. Supposedly, even for some time after the estate was built, it was still not the "done thing" to paint your door a different colour, and although gardens would be grown differently, unless something needed repairing, it would stay as it was built. I think a lot less would be spent on home-improvement back then, especially by new-owners. Obviously, as I was not around at the time, this may not be entirely representative of the time or the location you are modelling. :) You have an excellent layout and I think I may have been encouraged to get up and do something to mine for once. Perhaps a tow truck would look nice parked antisocially on the pavement outside that garage.
***** I'll be adding some changes to the gardens and doors. All the windows and drains will stay the same as the houses may have only been about 15 years old by the time the layout is set.
Thank you for some great tips on how to get realistic looking scenes. The idea of making the Suburb scene removable to simplify construction is a really great tip, which I intend to use on my Victorian Railways town of Riddells Creek. How do you intend to hide the screws used to remove the module or will you remove hem once completed and installed? A comment on your back scene being painted light blue, I spent three years in the UK and noticed that the sky was usually grey with the occasional out break of blue clouds. Many thanks, Neil
Great detail, love your one liners (not everyone drives a red fiesta) lol not sure on the era your working to, 70's 80's ? just thinking about the pathways, soild tarmac or pathing slabs, hope you dont over crowd the scene, looking forward to the next update, thanks for the tips etc. Regards Tim,
Did you ever consider using thin wood sheets for things like pavement etc? Would have thought that once sealed with cellulose paint and sanded it would look as good and would possibly be less hassle than making dams to stop plaster spreading out. Plus you could cut out segments more easily than trying to modify a plaster structure. Looking good though, giving me plenty of ideas on how to fill in odd corners and maybe change the entire look. Been wondering what to do about a twin track 2% woodland scenic ramp at the rear of the layout. Might hide it behind an open topped hill and put a tunnel mouth at the bottom.
DieyoungDiefast Thanks, i've used thick card for pavements before and it worked well. I just prefer the uneven concrete type look I get from the filler.
Hi Rich. following your vids with great interest, so many ideas you have help me with my layout. one thing, is there a set colour you have for your track/sleepers ?? as it does look really good to the real colour that you see on rails. once again, great stuff, look forward to your next update. neil.
The low relief town houses look exactly like a lot of the new build developments around Birmingham from 2000 onwards. My wife and I have just sold ours and it was built in 2006. Will that fit with the era you are going for? I might be wrong, I didn't really notice houses when I was the age I was when Intercity and NSE were in use, but I wanted to let you know. On the whole though, it looks great, the detached houses with driveways looked excellent!
AVFCAM The low relief town houses might be a little too late for the time period, probably late 90s/early 2000s. They are very similar to some I've seen in Milton Keynes. I choose them because I really like that style of house. A lick of paint might help to age them a little.
I also don't know what housing was like around the southeast either, only Birmingham...which isn't the southeast...unless you're from Yorkshire, them you might consider it somewhat southeast :D
Some great progress. Nice to see this area of the layout finally coming along!
Excellent work Richard. Definitely an inspirational effort. Really looking forward to it progress.

Love the videos. My son & myself are starting to build a layout and yours is a great inspiration
That looks fantastic already. Very nicely done.
Great video as always and an enjoyable watch. The suburb looks fab and like the idea of old and new. Susannah.
Always very inspirational Richard, great video looking forward to
the next one!
HI Richard, very good, nice to see the progress through sections of your layout, the suberb section looks very good so far, fits that part of the layout very well Andy
You always make it look so effortless! Great update.

You really make fantastically informative videos - not to mention making that look easy!!
Very nice video as always! I really like your way of creating a great scenery!
I'm loving this type of videos you do. You put enough to make them very appealing and make us want to see the next one,and you also do a lot of great cool bits scenery everywhere on it. Awesome job! Cheers RT
retrainrun Thanks!
Good update Richard , the ready made buildings come in handy and they look good
***** Thanks Dave, they save me so much time.
The detached houses look amazing, proper authentic, loving how the suburb scene is coming along :)
lovely like where I go to school, garage townhouses and 1970s houses
twas a brill idea richard

Excellent progress so far!!! Lookin very realistic!

Like the row of houses and gardens... easy to buy one or two of these but it does look better as a complete row of them.
Another good video Richard, the suburbs are coming along very nicely. As I've said before you are an artist. Keep up the good work. Ted.
mrgrumpy3 Thanks Ted
This is going to be the best scene yet!
Looking brilliant already!
Looks good can't wait for the next video of the suburbs scene
great update Richard like how the town scene is progresssing Phill
Looking good it Is going to make a great scene like all the fiestas at the end cheers Kevin
Really looking good..!!! Keep up the good work...
Great work again , coming together well .
Glynn
Cracking update. Lovely town scene. Cheers, Matt.
Excellent work Richard and I love the look of the modern houses, they look so realistic too. ................Graham
Graham Foulston Thanks Graham. I really like these houses, they have a nice quality feel to them.
Thanks for this. Very useful. I'm new to railway modelling, just finished laying the track. I'll be checking out a lot of your videos I reckon.
Great job on the new corner. I use styrene to make my curbs. In my area there is grass between the road and the side walk. I've been trying to make some roads around the warehouse and its been interesting.

the layout is looking good. =)

ZXGuesser Cool idea, I could use the photo to make a billboard elsewhere on the layout.
good job it really looks good. Your really talented at this keep up the good work and making awsome videos :)

percomotion Thanks Kev
The fiestas will be painted and spread around the layout. I'd love oxford diecast to do an SD1.
had a go at your idea of pavements made from pollyfilla fantastic result.thanks
Great video as always.

tjf4375 Street lights will be added. Just need to buy or make some.
excellent work richard. the gravel drive ways look very impressive too. funny how everyone in the street own a red car tho, lol.
terry
Glebe Road Junction Thanks Terry, fiestas are popular in this area!
Looking good - those 70s houses really look the part. I'll be interested to see what you do with the Tyre / Exhaust centre as I'm going to be incorporating one into CC over the coming days. Excellent work Richard, those new houses must have cost a bomb haha. Looking forward to the next update :)
***** It was a bit expensive, but these are the last buildings I needed for the layout. I keep hold of them so I can use them on any future layouts.
Well they're definitely worth it, they look fantastic
Nice job! Looks very 70's ish :P
i was hoping for a recycling centre type of scene but its not my railway!
I love this scene. A street of Fiestas, that's my kind of heaven lol. Looking good man
***** I personally would have preferred a street of Sierras :) The fiestas are really good quality models, which I why I bought so many.
EverardJunction Aye. Counting the days for a Mk2 Fiesta model here
Love all the projects you have on the go at once 😃
Great work on new housing area mate , just an idea you should add odd patch on roads and corseys where some utilies have been dug up and roughly tarmact ?
Grates odd pothole lol

uzyadadi Thanks mate, I've got plenty to do on the road and gardens.

Tim,
Tim Richardson Thanks, the layout is set from 1988 up to 1990.
nice one, as Always :)

neil Perryman I used railmatch sleeper grime and roof dirt for the track weathering. There is also some black in places.
Is the wood for the superb scene made of the old town scene of your layout.

Hi Richard,
Where did you get your retaining walls from ??
where did you get the cars from? great idea with the pavement.
LB&SCR modeler I got them from hattons, they are made by oxford diecast.
EverardJunction ok thankyou
I personally think you should repaint some of those fiestas!
But nice Scene!
HammersOfSpectacus They will be painted, I bought 6 and will only leave one of them red.
I also don't know what housing was like around the southeast either, only Birmingham...which isn't the southeast...unless you're from Yorkshire, them you might consider it somewhat southeast :D
it seems that the only car that you can buy in this part of town is a red fiesta!
13:53 if the cars were Vauxhall Cavaliers I'd now ask in which house Harry Potter's aunt and uncle live 😄
Y
