I have had a good encounter with William Shatner. At Star Trek Las Vegas in 2019, I decided it was time to have a photo taken with him. I've been a Trekkie since 1966 when I was 11. I knew my photo op wouldn't allow any time for more than a brief word or two. As soon as I approached him I said, "After more than 50 years, I thought it was time we met." Then the photographer snapped the picture and I started to walk away. Just as I began to move, Mr. Shatner said "I'll see you here in another 50." I was pleasantly surprised that he took the effort to reply to my comment, especially since there were dozens/hundreds of others in line before and after me. I gave him a smile and a thumb's up and took a nice memory with me. The photo turned out well, too.

@SciFiDude 79 Not true. Shatner can be a bit douchey with fans. Especially if they're the rabid fanboi or fangurl type who gush too much. I used to do CreationCon security back in the 90s. Sounds like GoGreen1977 played it right with him.

@@GoGreen1977 That's why you had a good experience with Shatner. You can definitely be a fanboi or fangurl at any age. Age doesn't really come into it. I have an actor friend. He's friends with Gates McFadden. So I got to meet her under those circumstances. So totally different experience than I would have at a con. When these actors do cons, they prime themselves for an expected kind of interaction. There are a lot of crazies. Back when I was doing CreationCon security in the 90s. We had this crazy woman who'd always come and demand to speak with Commander Data, NOT Brent Spiner. Because she had information for him that was vital to the very survival of the Federation. Okay. Let me get out my Klingon pain stick and then it's off to slave planet Bellevue for you. We spent a lot of effort keeping her far away from Brent Spiner. Only regret is we never did find out what that vital information was. I'm sure it would have been fascinating to hear.

@@GoGreen1977 Yeah, me too. I was about a decade behind you, but upon seeing the show in syndication, I developed a schoolgirl crush on Shatner...followed by a schoolgirl crush on Harrison Ford. :) Had I met either in person during that period of time, they would have been annoyed.
I think I managed to annoy Jonathan Frakes at a _Star Trek_ convention and I was but one annoying twenty-something in a large crowd. Sometime after that, I sent pictures to the TNG and DS9 actors for autographs. A note that accompanied the picture I sent to Frakes mentioned the outburst. He was the only actor who didn't return a signed pic. XD I was a little put out at the time, but I can now empathize with his position, assuming he even remembered me and disliked the fawning to the point of not returning a signed photo. Probably, it got lost or he was too busy. (As an aside, I've always doubted the authenticity of autographs sent through the mail. Is there any way to prove their authenticity or lack thereof? I still have them packed away somewhere.)
Once I got older, _Star Trek_ , _Star Wars_ , Indiana Jones and various pop culture icons meant much less to me. I still enjoy _Star Trek_ to some degree, but the fact it has too charitable a view of human nature is bothersome. When I go to watch TOS, I think, "Lie to me, sweet _Star Trek_ " and indulge in make-believe. Sometimes we all need to lie to ourselves for awhile, but it's important to remember that we are, in fact, doing so.
Getting back to the point: It must be difficult for actors who get recognized everywhere they go. I'm willing to give most of them a pass for being rude in certain situations. I mean, they're probably dealing with people who resemble schoolgirl or twenty-something me. I'd be annoyed, too. :)
TL;DR: I tend to overshare when I've been cooped up too long. You can thank COVID-19 and my fast typing for this overlong comment.

Considering the sheer number of people Shatner has alienated, there _has_ to be something off-putting about his personality. That said, the only two stories I heard about him from friends were extremely positive.
Here is one of those stories: A friend I knew was tending bar when Shatner walked in. They had a long conversation, part of which included Shatner's enthusiasm for a certain restaurant. The next day, Shatner sent her lunch from that restaurant.
When I've shared this story before, people have commented he was merely coming on to a woman. Maybe. But he knew he was never going to see her again and he certainly didn't have to send her lunch. You have to admit it was a thoughtful gesture.
The conclusion to draw is that human beings are inconsistent. We all have a dark side. In my opinion, the dark side really _is_ stronger and not merely easier, quicker and more seductive. History has indicted and convicted human nature of being mostly evil. Our execution is coming. Evolution gave us fatal flaws. The result will be a Greek tragedy on a global scale. I give the human race 150 years, tops. Probably, the end will come sooner than that.

There's alot more between Shatner and Nimoy's feud. I think you can see the straw that broke the camel's back on Shatner's own talk show. Nimoy was really proud of a photography book he had just publish. So of course Shatner compared it to a Playboy shot he helped with. You can see Nimoy's blood start to boil over this. Right after this show Nimoy quickly distanced himself from their friendship. Shatner always has to be the center of attention.

    • @hammyhamster8349

Shatner is vain. He's not the only star I've heard similar things bout, wanting shots framed differently, demanding they get the best lines etc., and most importantly make sure other people don't get focus. It's very selfish and I'm surprised any Actor's Union tolerates this. I know it was in the 60s but I doubt he's changed. The calls should be made on what is good for the show not to massage people's ego. Pandering to this behaviour not only damages the integrity of a show but creates a toxic working environment which is obviously bad for a show unless you're trying to create that atmosphere for artistic reasons and certainly a show like ST doesn't need that. You might take that path in a film but not in a TV series.
However given his age people should be gentle with Shatner now - he's not going to change and we have to except him for who he is. He was a very important part of ST but definitely not more so than Leonard Nimoy. Spock from the 1st series is much better than Spock from the 3rd series - not that I'm blaming WS for that but he didn't help - and that's sad.

@@hammyhamster8349 Oh he's very much the same. Had a short series I think it was on Discovery channel called How William Shatner Changed the World. He didn't changed the world Gene Roddenberry did. He has to the center even if it's a lie. Then him hosting 911 and standing there and letting his wife drown because he didn't want to get his hair wet. That was quickly canceled thank God. He should be ashamed on how he treated his co stars but that would take emotions he just doesn't have. I meant him once in the 1990s at Star Trek Convention and he truly is an asshole.

It was not only Shatner and Tokai, but also Shatner fighting with the four of the "lesser" roles: James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig. Shatner is such a Diva, granted justified in many ways. I myself saw Doohan back during a Trek Convention, Miami during the later 1980s (just after the Whale episode, ST-4). Doohan was amazing, so talented, funny, brilliant. The drunker he got, the funnier he was. Doohan was extremely critical of Shatner. One of his famous lines was (from memory) "I like Captain Kirk, but not Shatner." Also at present Tokai no longer fights with Shatner. He has finally decided to let it go, after all, to quote (or paraphrase), "Bill will be Bill."
There were also known issues with Roddenberry and Shatner, as well as Wil Wheaton and Shatner. From what I can tell, few people who worked with Shatner liked him.

He has repeatedly apologized to Takei (Shatner admitted he was very single-minded during the show and moves, and that probably irked Takei), saying he was sorry in interviews, magazines, and his own biographies. Takei just won't let it go. As for the wedding why would Takei even invite a man whom he publicly despised? Walter Koening admitted that he was 'used' by Takei at his wedding for no more than publicity purposes (he and Takei weren't that close but George insisted he be Best Man). Takei took they whole thing WAY to seriously!

Shatner and Nimoy did get along before filming finished on the TV series. Nimoy actually had problems with alcohol and it was Shatner who realised this and helped him. Their were a number of feuds and problems on Star Trek.
William Shatner and Walter Koenig. Shatner at a reunion couldn't even remember Keonig's name. Koenig was not happy about this.
TNG cast and the director of Star Trek Nemesis. There were a number of reasons for this but the main one that came out not long after the film did was the way the director treated the female cast members especially Marina Sirtis. He felt she was eye candy for the film. He would put her down all the time on set and even cut some of her lines from the script. The TNG cast had grown to feel like a family so they were not happy about this and took Marina's side
Denise Crosby and the Star Trek TNG producers. Crosby hated her character on her show and that is why she was killed of in season 1. She only returned later on in the show to play a different character a she felt the new character was better.
Robert Beltram and Jeri Ryan. Robert Beltram felt when Ryan came in she was taking scenes and lines from other actors like him and was not happy about it.
Chris Hemswoth/Chris Pine and Paramount Pictures. In what was labelled to be Star Trek 4 in the Star Trek Kelvin timeline. Chris Pine's Kirk was supposed to meet his father in the plot of the film even though he died in the 2009 film. Chris Pine's father in the 2009 film was played by Chris Hemsworth. At the time of the 2009 film Hemsworth was an unknown actor and so got a small pay packet for it. But since then he has played Thor in the MCU and has become a huge name. Hemsworth agreed to do Star Trek 4 but he wanted a big pay day to do so. Chris Pine felt since he played Captain Kirk in the films he should have a pay similar to Hemsworth's. The problem for Paramount is they do the Star Trek films on a certain budget and make small profit off the films. They make more money of the merchandise and deals with companies who use the films to promote their products. Paramount knew if they agreed to Pine and Hemsworth's pay demands they would either have to do the film on a small budget or raise the budget and lose money on the film, so the film got cancelled.

The Robert Beltram and Jeri Ryan is an interesting one. I mean on one hand it was obvious to everyone watching that once Jeri Ryan proved she isn't just eye candy but a pretty decent actor too, she was given more and more screen time (the same happened with Picardo's Doctor). So of course that would have been contentious point for the actors who were in the show from the beginning. But at the same time I read multiple times that Robert Beltram was extremely dissatisfied with his role and with the sanctimonious way Chakotay was written (the oooh so noble and wise American Indian) and that he actually hated the role and it was noticeable on his "wooden" performance. So I would expect him not to care much whether Jeri gets more screen time or not.

Regarding Diana Muldaur not being signed on for the third season there was an additional reason beyond the issues you brought up. I remember reading that the real issue was that she had trouble memorizing her lines and having to constantly prompt her was getting irritating on cast and crew. Too bad, I actually enjoyed the Dr. Pulaski character. They should have brought back Dr. Crusher and kept Dr. Pulaski for season three. That would have made a pretty full-season subplot of the two doctors developing a mutual dislike for each other. One of the real problems with The Next Generation is it didn't have a story arc. There was no sense of connectedness one episode to the next. The competing doctors theme might have made season three more interesting by providing an arc.

Although I love the TNG cast, Diana Muldaur was treated shoddily by them (minus Michael Dorn). To begin with they were upset by what had gone down with Gates McFadden being fired, and it didn't help matters that Muldaur was given what some of the cast felt was preferential treatment by the show's producers. Muldaur talks about this in her Television Academy interview (link below) but she was paid more money than everyone except Stewart, and producers allowed Muldaur to wear a more comfortable variation of the Starfleet Uniform after she refused to wear the one piece spandex version that all the actors, particularly Stewart, hated. Added to that, Muldaur had trouble remembering the medial jargon in her lines, and had to use cue cards which allegedly sent Stewart over the top. This was something Marina Sirtis herself confirmed at a Toronto Convention in 2012 when Gates made a joke about being fired, Marina said it was so nice when Gates came back because they didn't have to tape her lines all over sickbay. Director Paul Lynch who worked on TNG during his second season stated that in the TNG Companion (or similar type Trek production book) that Muldaur left the set in tears numerous times and was not surprised that she didn't return after the second season.

7 of 9 may have been brought on as a sex symbol and eye candy in a catsuit... but not only is that not Geri Ryan’s fault, but the character was the opposite of what you’d expect from the blatant sex symbol in a 90s tv show... she was the smartest character on the show, even smarter than Tuvok and The Doctor, she never used her sexuality and beauty as currency or a crutch, and she was possibly the STRONGEST character as well, physically and mentally. She was independent, dealt with trauma with grace and dignity, and Geri played her to a T... if Mulgrew should’ve had an issue with anyone, it should be Rick Berman. Geri is a total hero for women and girls, just a much as Janeway... and definitely way more than Kes.

    • @candacen7779
      @candacen7779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

One could argue 7 of 9 was written that way to give her more screen time because she was Braga's personal favorite. He wanted to see his favorite sex symbol on screen more and wrote it so that she would get more time, dialogue and character development as a result. The writers didn't need to play up her sexuality or beauty because you already had so many characters reacting to it at every opportunity thereby reinforcing the message. Not having 7 react to it in the stereotypical fashion that usually occurred in sci-fi films and TV doesn't make her use as a tool of titillation for fanboys any less disconcerting.
On top of that, Jeri was saddled with the responsibility of promoted the show significantly more than any other actor based on the idea that she was the most popular character. That couldn't have made Kate very happy since she is indeed the show's lead. I don't think Kate shouldn't have taken it out on Jeri, but it does send mixed messages to young girls and women when producers give the obvious sex symbol of the show the spotlight and turn her into every straight man's "dream girl" while the captain is essentially made to play second fiddle for a show she's been on since the beginning.
As for role models, one could easily make the argument that the show is saying that young girls and women can be anything, as long as people think you're hot. And behind the scenes, it could be interpreted that more doors will open for you if men want to sleep with you, even if you don't respond to it or encourage them. And sadly, that reality is still alive and well.

Nimoy was finally persuaded to return as Spock (he would not have appeared in the planned "Star Trek: Phase Two" series that got preempted when they decided to make a movie instead), and in Star Trek II, Spock wasn't even in the first draft of the script because everyone knew Nimoy wanted no more to do with the role. He was brought in, but Spock (as we know) was killed to allow Nimoy an exit -- it's long been rumored that Nimoy even made Spock's death a condition of his return, but that may not be true. However, Nimoy ended up actually enjoying the role for the first time in years, and liking the way the character was developed -- you'll note that this is a mellower, less intense Spock who seems to have made peace with his emotional human half, which makes sense after his mild-meld with V'Ger in the first film revealed to him how empty and rudderless a being of pure logic was. So, they had to figure a way to bring Spock back, as Nimoy wanted to continue in the role after all.
But this mention of Nimoy's dislike of Roddenberry does make me wonder if he would have felt the same way had Paramount not taken creative control away from Roddenberry after the _enormous_ budget overrun, and lukewarm critical reception from TMP had made its profit margin much smaller than it should have been. Roddenberry was "kicked upstairs" to the powerless position of "executive consultant," and control of the movies was turned over to Harve Bennett. One wonders if Nimoy would have been willing to return to the franchise if he'd still had to deal with Roddenberry.

Concerning Kate Mulgrew, one episode of Voyager that stands out for me is "Bride of Chaotica!" That's because - as Chaotica - she was dressed like a female bad girl from the 1930s. When I saw her in that outfit, I thought "Whoa, I never knew Captain Janeway could look that sexy!" While I agree her portrayal as a strong female character was the right move for Voyager, it was nice that - for that episode at least - she was allowed to "strut her stuff," so to speak.

I always looked at as this:
Spock by that point in his life was OLD (even for a Vulcan), basically in his twilight years, and all of a sudden he's back in time during the era of his youth; the prime of his life. He is getting to see his old friends again. (one of his belongings that Young Spock inherited was a picture of himself on his final adventure with his friends, clearly; Spock missed his friends) He is getting the very unique chance to see things play out again but with a twist. He knows the capabilities of his younger self and his crewmates as well as Starfleet and the Federation. He knows the Vulcan people can endure. Plus, he probably knows that even if he left the timeline, the Kelvin Timeline would continue in his absence, and in this timeline; the Vulcan people need help that he can certainly give. (plus he probably felt guilty for the loss of Romulus, cuz he PROMISED the Romulans he'd save them; and he failed)
In short; he got the rarest gift any old man could ever want; a chance to see his old friends again in their prime, living out their own adventures. He got to die happy seeing that.

It should be worth noting part of the reason the original script for "City on the Edge of Forever" was rewritten was because the original script was not viable for TV. Things like budget, practicality, sets, time to film, and so forth, need to be taken into account, and these things factored into the rewrite. The original script won an award for best teleplay, but tt was still not feasible to shoot.

I understand why some people don't like Shatner. But for the life of me, I'll never understand why so many people think it's cool to make fun of Bill Shatner for wearing a toupee. In my book, it is never cool to make fun of somebody for their physical shortcomings. It's not Shatner's fault that he went bald at a young age. That happens to lots of men, and it is in no way a reflection of their character.
What was Shatner supposed to do? Not wear a toupee? He's an actor. If William Shatner hadn't worn a toupee, there is no way in hell he ever would have been cast as Captain Kirk - or any other leading-man role in any other production. He would've been relegated to smaller character roles for his entire career. He was an attractive guy when he was young, and wearing the toupee allowed him to get much better roles. It's a no-brainer, and something that plenty of other actors have done, so I don't understand why so many people think it's a good reason to make fun of him.

I did feel like Data would have to earn the respect of the crew and that it would take time for him to be thought of as more than just a machine, but that only seemed to be the case with the one character -- that was always weird to me, and toward the end of the season she seemed to be softening toward him. oh, maaan. i was in love with Jennifer Lien and Kate Mulgrew. I had liked Kate ever since Mrs. Columbo, for those of you who remember that short-lived show. Jeri was nice, and a darn good actress, but I wish they could have kept Jennifer. I really liked the Kes Character. It was a bad idea to limit her lifespan to 3 years. As for The Shat. I love Shatner. I do. I did a lot of research on Shatner for a book. I can tell you he would often stop the shoot and have a talk with the director, like this: "Joe, Uhura doesn't need to say that line. Tell you what: *I* will say the line, and you can just KEEP THE CAMERA ON ME." (emphasis mine). And he would do this IN FRONT of Nichelle. He stepped on so many of her lines, that often, her entire contribution for an episode would be [say it with me] "Hailing frequencies are open, Captain." And THAT is why she threatened to walk off the show, and MLK talked her into staying. Shatner did a lot of damage, but he was such a narcissist, he never realized it. He thought he was doing what's best for the show.

Yeah, I missed Kes, as the character had SO much potential which Jennifer Lien did an EXCELLENT job with. I TRULY missed her (I'm a "fan" of Character Development ) when they wrote her out and replaced her with Seven, which in MY opinion was VERY WELL executed - far and away better than she was written - by Jerry Ryan. It was INCREDIBLY difficult getting past the Chrome Jump-Suit as an easy short-cut to "sexuality" (which SKILLED writers and costumers COULD have done far better if they'd taken the trouble) and see the CHARACTER, but Jerry Ryan did an ADMIRABLE job developing such a 1-dimensional character (as written) that her overall performance has endured as well as it has since. That said, I REALLY like the overall working-dynamic of the Kes period, better than the 1-direction/no-growth story arc of Seven, woven throughout the remainder of the series. Gorgeous and capable, yes, but one-dimensional, nonetheless - FAR more capably executed than written.

He explained to Shatner the dog was out playing in the front yard when the sprinkler system came on and the dog ran into one of the sprinkler heads and broke his neck. Shatner apparently laughed so hard that Kelley never spoke to him again. Not sure if Shatner made that up or not, but that's the story he told in the interview.
